this is such a nice vid. i hate when people give you one or two specs and say these are the talents go play without explaing a bit why they pick what they pick. especially when in vanilla you can move around so many talents. I'd like to see a side by side comparison on combat dagger vs combat sword vid.

I think you are forgetting that while 10 energy from Vigor isnt alot for PvE its MASSIVE for PvP. Its a litteral difference between killing a target or running out of energy and letting them escape or heal.

You mention Vigor is a "crap" talent... but this was incorrect in classic; instead it was a very "gear dependent" talent and was the only way of hitting 120 energy when combined with five piece Nightslayer. In turn 120 energy unlocked Ambush-Backstab off of one energy bar which was a guaranteed kill against clothies... especially with Perditions Blade.

Combat mace's (servo arms) with deep sub was incredible for pvp. Plus riposte. It was the harp build of bc minus adrenaline rush. Ridiculous stuns.

Thanks for making this. I haven't played in about 12 years, and I just signed up again for classic WoW. I'm trying to figure out which spec. I want, and this video helped. I like how in classic, you can really fine-tune a character. (Actually, I tried playing for a month back around 2013, and I hated how dumbed down they made the point spec.)

I think I’m going to end up playing a backstab focused rogue with a few points in swords because i want to duel wield sword mainhand dagger offhand to give me options at max level without having to grind weapon skill. And I’m planning on going through dungeons and leveling casually for fun, so it’ll be nice to have weapon variety from drops too

Your plan is fine for end-game dungeons and so on, but it isn’t optimal for raiding. So, if you ever change your mind and decide to try your hand at raiding after all, you will need to choose between pure combat dagger or combat sword spec. Your only other alternative for using two different weapon types effectively is the non-dagger assassination spec. Just be sure that you have a 30% or better crit rating (relatively easy to achieve with the usual raid buffs).

Gotta be honest,Vigor was great for PvP, especially when you had the NS 5/8 bonus that gave you a combined 120 energy. I guess from a PvE standpoint you're right though...

A bit wrong about Vigor and Pvp...that extra 10 energy will allow you to do Ambush + gouge on the opener which can help a lot setup another Ambush or backstab etc...

Let me add a comment about assassination spec. Whether you’re a human rogue (which gets a +5 sword/mace racial) or not, assassination is a terrific spec to play when you want to use your best weapons, but those weapons happen to be of different types (for example, the Claw of the Black Drake fist weapon from BWL in your MH and the Core Hound Tooth dagger from MC in the OH). The spec really shines, though, if your crit chance is 30% or better (easily achievable with the usual raid buffs). Trust me… it’s fun!

hmm not sure 1 point into dual wield is better... thats only 5% more off hand damage bringing the total to 55% and it only affects offhand swings. Seems to me that point would be better spent in Dagger spec for that 1% crit, or even Vial poisons for the 4% more damage on all poisons.

i think the improved poisons talent is betetr for alliance rogues because of lack of windfury, horde should go for the murder.

Agreed on most points. VIgor is by far the worst 31 point talent in the game. 10 Energy does absolutely NOTHING FOR YOU. Only semi viability comes from using it with Nightslayer for 120 energy but even that is meh considering its a t1 armor. www.reddit.com/r/classicwow/comments/9uzc9f/discussion_thread_rogues_talent_optimizations_and/ Here is my suggestion on how Rogues skill trees could be optimized in vanilla for creating a much more unique and definitive playstyle for Rogues. The CB/Prep combo is broken and seriously needs an overhaul because nothing else is even remotely viable. Vigor should either be moved to 21st spot and CB to 31 point, also made 2 pointer so you can skill it into 120 energy. I dunno. TBC bought some much needed changes to rogues because their arsenal is pretty restricted in vanilla. I love the playstyle but they are insanely broken because they never removed the CB/PRep comb as no one has incentive to move further down to specialize in a tree because both Vigor and Premeditation are shit compared to CB/Prep combo.
