While it is great to see Emmy Lou Harris and Bonnie Raitt, the sad truth is you can't hear them on this performance because I think they never turned on their microphone, or some other excuse. Had the good luck to see Little Feat, for the first time, with Lowell George at the University of New Hampshire in 1978, on the tour promoting their "Waiting For Columbus" live album. The version of "Dixie Chicken" on that album is much longer that the Midnight Special version, and segues into "Rocket In My Pocket".

Such an abbreviated version, presumably for the constraints of TV. The "Waiting For Columbus" version is outstanding, clocking in at almost 9 minutes (3x this version)

That version was cut to shreds for TV purposes. Need to checking out the “Waiting For Columbus” live version, or minimally the studio version.

My dad, who passed away a year ago today, absolutely loved Little Feat and saw them live tons of times over the years. This takes me back to my childhood in the 80's and 90's. Thanks for this Doug, it's perfect timing.

As others have mentioned, Waiting for Columbus is the pinnacle of George-era Little Feat--but I haven't seen anyone mention the song Spanish Moon. It's the standout, for me. Glad to hear you caught the kinship with the Grateful Dead.

Our first date together my future wife and I went to see Little Feat at Music Inn in Lenox Mass in 1974. Rode my motorcycle. It was a grass and natural sort of amphitheater and you just tossed a blanket down and there it was. I spent most of the 70's going to things like this. Yeah, I'm a pretty lucky guy.

I saw Little Feat in Toronto in 1990 or 91. They opened for the Allman Brothers. They did a few songs together. Jeff Healey was in the front row and they brought him up on stage for a song or 2. What a night! I don't remember much else other than the feeling.😅

The great thing about the Midnight Special broadcasts is that they were never lip-synched so the performers could really let loose and improvise. I subscribe to their channel. This performance was really fun.

Lowell George was with Frank Zappa and The Mothers. One day Lowell brought Frank the song "Willin' " to see if Frank wanted to record it. Frank said, "Why don't you go form your own band". So Lowell did, and Little Feat was the result. Thanks Frank, you "helped" create one of the best bands to ever go on a stage. BTW, "Willin' " is a great song.

I live in the Mexican town that was the inspiration for that album cover by Neon Park XIII. I was friends with Neon in the 80s, and his Tales of San Miguel de Allende are part of the reason I moved here over a dozen years ago. Neon was a good friend of Lowell and the band. He did all but one of their album covers until his death. The “tape painting” technique he developed was also inspired by his frequent stays in Mexico, where he was exposed to Huichol art. I know nobody asked for this ramble. But if you enjoy the artwork on the albums, it’s worth it to check out his other work.

The version of this song from "Waiting for Columbus" is really the definitive version of this tune. This version was missing an entire verse (We made all the hot spots - my money flowed like wine...) and a lot of fixed instrumental parts of the song; they obviously made a huge cut edit right after Sam Clayton's little percussion solo. It's interesting to see the musicians, but unfortunately this performance was really butchered for television, a lot was cut out. Typically Bill Payne does some really outstanding rag-time piano playing in the segments they edited out.
@GreggoMusicChannelАй бұрын
Oh Doug. Waiting For Columbus is Feat at their apex. They even have a dixieland band playing with them on Dixie Chicken. You really really need to do a deep dive on Waiting For Columbus. You won't regret it But thank you for doing this at least. Sadly, Lowell George's son Forrest (a good FB friend of mine) just passed away, too a few weeks ago. RIP Lowell and Forrest. Trivia: The first time I saw Lowell George was an appearance on F Troop.

Great reaction, Doug. I’m not sure of the gender of the main character who’s telling the story, but whoever it is, it’s the exact opposite of what you explained: the storyteller says “if *you’ll* be my Dixie Chicken, *I’ll* be your Tennessee Lamb”. But you cleared it up by the end. 3:21 And while I salute you’re wanting to react to a live version, choosing a TV show version that had commercials is always going to be shorter than an *actual* live version. Of which there are many both on audio and video. Almost all of their live performances, outside of official releases are in the public domain, by permission of the members. And they are a jamming band, and their concert versions really open up the songs.

I think you got it backwards. If he will be the Dixie Chicken, she'll be the Tennesee Lamb. Chicken is a reference to money (sugar daddy) and she will be his girl and all that comes from it (including sex). He falls for her, buys her a house, then she runs off with another sugar daddy. All the guys at the bar fell for the same scam at the end.

Many years ago, I heard Lowell George talking about recording “Dixie Chicken”. Lowell said that on the original session he had John Sebastian (Lovin’ Spoonful) and Phil Everly on backing vocals. Lowell went on to say that unfortunately the recording engineer at the studio “pushed the wrong buttons and deleted John and Phil”. Lowell ranted and raved for hours, but couldn’t get back these prized vocal contributions.

Oh, man. 😖 Does this performance leave out the song's second stanza, or did you have to cut it? That one sets up the third stanza perfectly and explains why everything happened as it did.
