Hi Forrest, I first saw Little Feat at Paul's Mall only because my friends dragged me to the show--I'd never heard of them before. Emmy Lou Harris, Bonnie Raitt and Melisa Manchester were backup singers, Tower of Power the horn section, and of course Lowell and Little Feat. I had front row seats in a club that sat maybe 200 people for both their shows that night. Got to talk with the band between shows and found they would be in Atlanta in a couple of weeks. Next day I went out and bought all their albums and then drove to Atlanta to see them at a "dance club", then again in Boston and Honolulu. The best live band of all time, still play them regularly. So many great songs and it's amazing how unknown they still are. I love turning people on to them.

They all just stepped it up and kept the Feat singin' and thrivin'.

Not underrated at all--they were big, very big. If you're a millennial, all these classics are underrated, because you missed it, and real music is now underrated. If you where around when it was happening, though--not underrated. See how that works?
@MrHunterbuchanan4 жыл бұрын
@@tswrench That was both condescending AND missed the point, nicely done. Yes, people who were around to experience rock in the 70s probably didn't consider Little Feat underrated at the time, especially while Lowell George was still alive. But I almost never hear them talked about these days, and even if you're discussing 70s rock, there are probably 100 other bands you hear discussed and played more often than Little Feat. I believe they deserve more discussion and more listening *today*, especially when compared to many other groups from their time, and that makes them underrated *today*, in my opinion. See how that works?
@tswrench4 жыл бұрын
@@MrHunterbuchanan -- I must have missed the part in your original comment where you're only referring to "today" when you characterize Little Feat and their signature song as "absolutely underrated." Let me look again... Nope. It's not there. So, no, I don't see how that works, You go on to say that the "absolutely underrated" band and song gets the highest rating from Jimmy Page, one of the biggest names of all time in the music world. That doesn't sound like underrated to me, so I don't get how that works, either. This comments section is full of people posting the same inane assessments about the band as being "underrated," or as having "never got their due." Have a look, it's everywhere, like horseshit. We are talking about a band with millions of fans (even today) who bought millions of albums, a band that's headlined--God knows how many--sold-out shows, and the list goes on. When you haven't learned anything, you don't know anything, but that doesn't seem to stop the know-nothings from trampling the legacy of a band with their urge to put what they don't know into writing. I think that's how that works.

That was a Warner Bros. Records package deal that night on MS! Little Feat, Emmylou (Reprise), Bonnie, and Jesse Winchester (Bearsville) were all on Warners proper, or a subsidiary in the '70s. As you might imagine, they were all good buds...I know Lowell and Bonnie certainly were. I met Bonnie backstage at Houston's legendary (and long defunct) Liberty Hall around the time of the release of her '71 debut album. I was so proud of being the entertainment editor of my high school newspaper (a daily....mimeographed!), that I showed her my little business card stating my position. "Now I know you're a narc!" she said! A gracious and kind lady, it took a 1989 move to Capitol Records for her to become a household name, but she's a deserving and wonderful talent....including shining a welcome light on longtime blues pioneers who influenced her, like Sippie Wallace.

Yes to all of the above. I've seen Little Feat many times (unfortunately, none before Lowell George died) but anyway...one of the band members (can't recall which now) lives in Topanga Canyon (Los Angeles area). There's a tiny outdoor theatre "The Will Geer (as in Grandpa Walton) Theatricum Botanicum" in that area which holds about 500 people. Typically, they just do plays there - but the wife of that band member either ran it or managed the theater company - so Little Feat ended up doing a show there. They built an elaborate set on stage of the Spanish Moon Cafe and when they played that song, members of the theater company dressed as "hookers and hustlers" did indeed fill up the room and circulated throughout the theater. It was an amazing show.

As soon as I saw the title, I cracked up. This is gonna be a fun one. One of the most fun concerts ever was Little Feat opening for Jimmy Buffett. Danced, laughed, and sang the whole night. Freaking lovely...

Thanks a bunch for this one, Jamel. Always loved NBC's "Midnight Special" because every act played live. Seeing Bonnie Raitt makes me wish you would react to her haunting cover of Joni Mitchell's "That Song About the Midway."

This video is my new favorite!! I know I said that last week but this is one of my favorite songs of all time!! I saw Little Feat in concert over 10times in the 90's and they always put on One Hell of a Show!!

Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page said Little Feat was his favorite band during this time. Check out their live album ‘Waiting For Columbus’, and listen to ‘Fat Man In The Bathtub’, and ‘Rocket In My Pocket’ for starters. Criminally underrated band, in my opinion! One of my all-time favorite bands!!!

There was a period back in the 70's when the Feets ruled D.C., immediately selling out every date. That's because they were one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I wasn’t old enough to see it but everyone that saw them live........ Let’s just say they all claim there was NO argument in the rock world about who is number one live, Maybe the critics or bands would argue, But I’ve been told multiple times that among fans there was no discussion whatsoever

I got into little feat during their comeback in the early 1990s. Hate to lose your Lovin was the song that really drew me in. It's so grooving and fun to listen to.

I saw them and Bonnie in Norfolk in the late 70's sing this song. The line "...and all the boys at boys at the bar began to sing along.." taught me to go slow with that new "love". Great song.

For a live audio album, Waiting For Columbus is unmatched. If you want to see the band with an audience, and at their peak, check out the Rockpalast video, from the 70's from Essen Germany, full length songs and all the fun of a Little Feat show. Not to be missed.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Waiting for Columbus. (I was at all of the UK shows that made up part of the album. Still got the tour t-shirt though it appears to have shrunk mysteriously 😊) but I have to say that I prefer the Rockpalast recordings from the same tour.

Little Feat, L.A. boys, rock hard. George Lowell was the main songwriter and singer and he played a wicked slide guitar. His lifestyle ended his life as the band was peaking in popularity. Rock and Roll Doctor is a gem. Willin' has been covered by some of the greatest artists on earth. Please check out Little Feat.

Little Feat were such awesome talents. Do yourselves a favor Get their Waiting For Columbus live album then sit back with your favorite beverage and socialize on. You'll soon notice every foot in the place tapping with heads bobbing while looking around to see everyone boogying one way or another. Extra special mention to it as a background for a poker game or a long drive tour.

Could not agree more. Each musician is among the best at his instrument. Lowell and Paul and Billy go without saying but Kenny on bass and Richie on drums are beyond brilliant, especially live. And Sam is a growling Swiss army knife

You couldn't go wrong listening through their live album 'Waiting for Columbus'. Lowell's singing, and slide guitar interplay with the Tower of Power horns in Mercenary Territory is sublime. Personal favorite deep cuts include Lowell's original arrangement of Front Page News on 'Hoy-Hoy!', and Hamburger Midnight from the first album, for it's sheer insanity and lurching rhythm. Tie-ins to previous reaction videos: The guy in overalls you were remarking on is Sam Clayton, brother to Merry Clayton (singer on The Rolling Stones song Gimme Shelter), and Little Feat's drummer was (RIP) Richie Hayward, who was behind the kit on Linda Ronstadt's The Midnight Special performance of "You're No Good". Pull any thread in the Little Feat ball of yarn and all sorts of connections pop up. Another commenter has mentioned Emmylou Harris; the red-haired backup singer beside her in this clip is Bonnie Raitt (with 10 Grammy awards under her belt, too). Her version of "Runaway" has an entirely different feel than the Del Shannon original you've heard before. Little Feat's original bassist, Roy Estrada, and Lowell George had both played with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Guitarist Elliot Ingber had as well, and has a writing credit for "Don't Bogart that Joint" from when he and several future Feat musicians were in the Fraternity of Man, and performed the version heard in the movie 'Easy Rider'. Both Ingber and Ry Cooder played guitar in incarnations of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. Cooder played slide on several tracks of Little Feat's first album after Lowell had messed up his hand, and has dozens of albums to his name (listen to Goin' to Brownsville leading into Dark Is the Night from his 1st). Lowell's daughter Inara George has also had a successful musical career, solo, and with other acts like The Bird and The Bee, and a collaboration with Van Dyke Parks. Van Dyke Parks arranged Little Feat's song Spanish Moon; pull on *his* thread and out pops everything from arranging "The Bare Necessities" in the Disney film The Jungle Book to The Beach Boys.
