Apparently, Rechenka demands a Very high emotional investment/cost from Maestra Dee- anna. So much so, that she has been reluctant to perform what many consider her Iconic Signature song in a Full Length Solo Concert setting. For a period of Many many months virtually retiring this intimately personal song from her active performance repertoire, unless strongly requested by her audience.

According to several interviews with Diana & her vocal coach, During this contest, she was going thru puberty & lost several note levels. They had to adjust the music for her. Since this period, she has regained the lost and increased her range to three octaves.

Enjoyed the commentary. Rechenka is Russian folk/tribal. She uses various vocal techniques and a modern use of yodeling to express anguish...it's really spectacular if you are looking at a second song.

Thank you for this analysis. Diana is always evolving in her singing. But you should listen and experience her rendition of Rechenka (a version of an ancient Russian folk song), in this same show. Dude, it's not too low for her. It was her style of singing it. She's masterful at voice texturing, trust me, she can go way lower, she was singing this low when she was fourteen years old.

Hi Doug. Diana does all her own arrangements and interpretations. Other opera singers who have reacted to her say that she is a dramatic contralto who is also polyphonic and capable of uncommon larynx manipulations. Loreena McKennitt has been my favorite female vocalist for the past 15 years. But now, Diana is my favorite. Her tone quality and passion and intensity give me goosebumps. She is almost 18 now and she is improving and getting stronger almost on a daily basis (I've been following her progress).

Nothing to do with any "shock factor" theories. This is her natural low tessitura. She has various other songs with a much lighter and airier tone which are just as great.

@@BrettHondow exactly... she can choose which way she wants to sing. I’ve seen her videos where she never uses her super low tone. But it’s her low tone videos that get reacted to in huge numbers and get her the most visibility. So I still stand by that among the tones she could sing in there has been a conscious effort by her and her producer to heavily incorporate her lower registry because it shocks people and helps her stand out in a crowded world. None of that detracts from the fact that she’s an amazing singer and performer.

@@BrettHondow Brett, I agree with you. Diana said as she was growing up, her voice got lower. She said she then had to practice harder at the higher range. She also said Human was easy for her to sing and was her favorite. So when she sings at her natural low range, it's was not done to "shock" people. When she sang Take On Me in her apartment, at the end of the song, she sang high and sustained the note as long as possible. But in later performances, she would sing the same song and at the end go high but then drop lower. Also in almost all of her other songs (to the best of my knowledge), she has never sustained the last note as long as possible (in Oh Darling she did). Why not? With her talent, she would do this to "shock" people. Singing at a lower range is easier for her because that's her natural voice. Singing higher is harder for her. To say that Diana would sing at a lower range to shock people and differentiate herself from other singers would be an insult to her. She sings at the lower range because "that is her natural voice." And as she gets older and her vocal chords mature, she will find it harder to sing at the higher range. She will do it because she's a professional, but it won't be easy on her voice. How about Cher, Tina Turner, Shakira and others, do they sing at a lower range to shock people? So Brett, you are absolutely right.

As you are a classical composer, I would be very interested in hearing your take on Dimash’s more classical performances, e.g. Olimpico (aka Ogni Pietra) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpyzhGmqbZmknZY and Passione kzbin.info/www/bejne/boLXepKcpbl8rsU . Both of these were composed by a well-known Russian/Ukrainian composer Igor Krutoy specifically for Dimash’s voice. He has got a classical training and was offered a position in Astana Opera but he refused. Also, he has got a master’s degree in jazz and contemporary music.

Diana is a dramatic contralto, the rarest contralto type and deepest woman voice. Dimash is the universe, but Diana is the earth, our home... and when you hear her voice you feel like she has wrapped you in a warm velvet blanket and served you a mug of hot, dark chocolate. Every song is a unique experience, it captivates you, you feel bound by magic. Diana was born in May 2003 in Arseniev in the Far East of Russia. She didn't have a happy start in life. The woman who gave birth to her had 12 pregnancies, only Diana survived ... and she did not love her child, abused her cruelly and tried to I drowned. Relatives found the child with a broken collarbone on the street and shortly afterwards took the 3-year-old girl to an orphanage. Finally, there she found love ... from Irina Ponik. Taking a little child into the family was not easy for Irina. Her son was already 20 years old, the daughter 17 years old ... Start all over now? Yes!!! Diana came to a poor but loving family when she was 5 years old. Diana spoke badly, cried a lot and was still very scared but she all sing songs from cartoons. And so, the singing teacher Elena Kazantseva discovered Diana's talent. And all started ... During 2008 to 2012 Diana sang around 40 songs, including at competitions. Diana's mother became her daughter's manager. Everything that has to do with Diana's singing training, performances, competitions, looking for sponsors is organized and coordinated by her mother Irina Ponik. She took extra sewing courses too. Since then, she's been sewing all of Diana's stage costumes, because all of these things consume the family budget. She accompanies her daughter on trips and captures her life in photos and videos with the persistence of a visionary. After winning a competition in Moscow, Diana's mother was offered to leave the girl in a boarding school for gifted children. She refused and in 2012 her family moved to her hometown of Toglyatti, much closer to Moscow. Diana lost her fear that the woman who gave birth to her would kidnap her. Diana's voice, her perfect pitch and her sense of rhythm were extraordinary even as a little girl and so she impressed with her talent in over 50 national and international competitions. Her confidence grew, her voice continued to develop ... until one day she was asked to compete in more distant competitions so that other children could have a chance to win. In 2017 she went to Moscow, at the Russian 'The Voice Kids'. Diana sang 'Yodel-Time' kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHzHp5SNqMlsZ7M but none of the judges turned around but the whole audience gave 'standing ovation'. What happened? Next day, a huge scandal broke out in social medias. People demanded for Diana's participation in the competition. A door had closed but a new door opened: Diana entered another competition in 2018 and 2019 and won twice. This unique international competition of 'You are Super' took place in Moscow, especially for adopted and orphaned children. The winner of the season (Diana) will be determined by a 6-day public vote and the final took place in the Kremlin Palace and her videos were uploaded to KZbin and soon she had millions of fans. Diana won also a scholarship to the College of Music. Igor Krutoy gifted her a small apartment in Moscow. So, she could start her vocal training with the best teachers such as Professor Olga Donskoy (She died of Covid-19 in October 2020). The break of voice made Diana’s voice even darker and deeper. She has mastered this time very professionally and has worked hard to bring back the lost high notes and has expanded her vocal range, currently from C3 to D6. Her genres are folk-rock, folk-pop, jazz, soul, blues, soldier songs and Diana-stile… tradition meets modernity. She loves to sing in French, but also sings in English, German, Arabic and Spanish... but only phonetically. But she is not only a great singer and storyteller, but also a humble, intelligent and hardworking young woman. She also gives charity concerts. She loves her family and her fans. They are 'friends' to her and they are very supportive of her. Diana is grateful that they helped improve her home studio and also supported her future plans. Her Russian Friends have chosen Diana as "National Treasure" (no official title). 2020 Diana graduated from high school a year earlier, as an external student and now, she is a student at the Russian Institute of Theater Arts (similar to Juilliard). She is already composing songs and we will definitely hear her own song soon. She will only take part in major competitions if invited. Such competitions require a lot of time, effort and strength. As a result, participants often have large educational gaps and problems later on. Diana is a smart young woman. She focuses on her studies, her voice and expanding her repertoire.
