Watching him destroy people on the other side in debates is quite fun to watch. Living under the side that he destroys and watching it kill our economy and society is not fun to watch. That being said and refocusing on playing an instrument, with proper critiquing and practice, he can get better if he chooses. @AmysMusic7 Жыл бұрын
Ben is clearly, barely classically trained, from a classically trained professional. He has the skill of someone who dabbles, with a good ear for intervals-hence he plays pretty well in tune. And if you vehemently disagree, then list his violin teachers. Most of us have to have a pedigree to show that we are trained correctly-though his playing is a dead giveaway as well. In the end, Ben being classically trained isn’t the point. Thank you Two-Set for your two-“sense” to help out/guide all of us in our musical journey, or enlighten us in our musical ignorance!
@AmysMusic7 Жыл бұрын
@@tinalettieritechnical excellence? You clearly do not have a background in playing an instrument like the violin, or a very good ear to know what technical excellence is. Not appropriate to comment when we don’t know what we are looking for. Just because you like what you hear, or just because you like Ben Shapiro, doesn’t mean his playing is good violin playing.
@tinalettieri Жыл бұрын
@@AmysMusic7 I actually did take violin and piano and my violin teacher, a Julliard grad student ear tested me before she took me on. I have almost perfect pitch. I scored an 86 on my first National Piano Teachers (or whatever it's called) exam at the end of my first year of study. In fact, I could play by ear but I was forbidden from doing so, yes, FORBIDDEN by the technique nazis. Ben's personality has nothing to do with my understanding of music. For an amateur, he did well but I never said he was technically excellent. In fact, I said the opposite. The arrangement he played is quite simple actually and I'd put it at advanced beginner level. We all start someplace. Yehudi Menuin quit taking lessons because his teachers were insisting on unnatural body movements and postures which is what I was talking about. I took piano for adults in a college and the professor who also taught at Westminster told us, a missed note can be fixed while learning a piece but rhythm is everything. Without it, you don't have a melody. Having to go back to fix a note breaks the rhythm and anyone with an ear know they missed it and can go back and fix it once they understand the piece.

I've always loved when TwoSet gives their feedback to violinists. Seeing this for instance has made me think much more consciously about the small details such as breathing before a new phrases, vibrato continuity and doing shifts while maintaining sound quality. It is really helpful tot get these tips on things that would otherwise go unnoticed. As a percussionist and now (I guess) violinist for three years, I'm not feeling that I am able to bring my musicality into my playing due to the huge difference in nature of these instruments, but TwoSet demonstrating their knowledge and sharing it can give me a huge boost in my perception of violin playing and musicality in general. I wish they'd do these kinds of tips more often!

Andrew Cox ....they are professional violinists , Ben is not , is that a real question !?
@MissTwoSetEncyclopedia4 жыл бұрын
@Andrew Cox It's not a question of time or age. There are 10-year old children who play better than adults. Ben Shapiro have a very busy life, he plays violin on the side as a hobby. Brett and Eddy are professional violinists. They graduated from a music university, played in orchestra for years, practice every day, tour the world performing live shows, etc... They have much more experience. This doesn't mean mean he's a bad player (he's actually quite good for a non-professional), it's just that, right now, they play at a higher level than him.
@SakiBlablabla4 жыл бұрын
Andrew Cox Yeah we never know , maybe he needs outside perspective on what he should practice more , tho I have a feeling as well that he know where he lacks , he is not a professional, his goal is not to perform like a professional, but to perform as a hobby . Also those remarks and critics are not only made for him , he is just the exemple-case here , there are people that don’t have enough experience to hear or observe their own mistakes, which this video might help , it is also very interesting and educational for the listeners to hear the technical explanation of someone’s performance , cause listener are not always educated enough to spot mistakes or nuances , etc ain’t nothing wrong with this video , so I don’t get why it bothers you ?!

Yeah they could have had a video just putting him on the back saying how good he is, for a hobbyist, and judge with low standards. Instead, they heard he was a decent player and changed their level of critique. Dude's clearly put in work on the violin, he doesn't need pure encouragement to keep going, so you point out flaws because good players correct flaws. Also, I don't care about the dude, politics, or any of that, I'm just seeing too many "how dare you you nitpick, he isn't a pro!" In the comments, missing the point of critique

Totally agree. If he's playing at that level, on a public platform...he's comfortable enough with it to be critiqued.

He was a concert violinist for a short time before he solidified a career in political media. I think its shows that even if you have reached a high level that if you stop practicing regularly bad habits will creep in. I assume he still plays casually at home but doesn't sit and put in a lot of practice on a set list like you would to prepare for a concert/show performance.

@@Mansohuuj The internet is a public forum -- when posted, it becomes fair game to whoever wants to watch, or comment on it. What twoset has done here is a clear and classic example of Fair Use, so there's no reason they shouldn't be able to make this vid, even if the video was just insulting his playing mercilessly (there's an argument with that hypothetical to harassment, but the fair use stands). If Shapiro wanted to criticize a twoset video on his show, he'd be protected by the same right.

Ben is so lucky to get a free private lesson from the inventors of the Ling Ling workout. In all seriousness though, as an ex-violin player this video shows perfectly the difference between someone who can "play" violin and a professional who makes violin and art form. The level of expression and subtlety that makes the pros soooo good literally takes years to attain and (for someone like me) is easy to feel like your skill plateaued and you aren't improving.

I think part of it is also just listening to a lot of music and trying to replicate what you hear. It helps.

@@jamieg2427 TwoSet have a series called the "Ling Ling workout", where they have to play some pieces with specific challenges : holding the violin like a cello, at double speed, using only the first finger on the left hand, while eating chili, etc... Other great musicians occasionally join them for these videos. You can check the playlist "TwoSet Violin - Ling Ling workouts" on my channel : kzbin.info/aero/PLRNavMkwfqm0tt1OppBmZ3blf9MvVYHNW

As a college-trained flutist and amateur pianist with a music ed degree, I can say the violin is one of the instruments with the most opportunities for error, requiring many, many hours of practice to perfect. I listened to Ben’s playing and knew that while he is an accomplished player, he is not on par with the true professionals (obviously it is not his profession). It was so great to hear these two professionals critique and explain the shortcomings in a way I could not. I’m also impressed with the civility of the comment section!

Their comment on how “the cheap fix to tension on shifts losing the sound is to back off on the bow” totally threw me. I use that exact same line with my trombone students who are learning to overcome tension in slide technique. It always amazes me to learn how technique crosses over between instruments
@wolfsurvival20094 жыл бұрын
True indeed! Avoiding unnecessary tension and choosing free movement is so important! Same for pianists actually. Less tension and more free arm movement = better sound.
@_the_bomb4 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by “tension in slide techniques?”
@ata_52084 жыл бұрын
_The_Bomb if your slide wrist is tense or locked when playing trombone, your speed+accuracy basically disappear. If you can’t move the slide quickly, your legato suffers tremendously. If you carry tension in your wrist, you also have a high chance of jostling the horn when you shift, which causes the mouthpiece to shake, which kills your tone, especially crossing partials. “The cheap fix to dealing with wrist tension on shifts is to just back off on the air to hide those imperfections.” Good trombone technique is actually really similar to how string players move the bow or how good conducting technique flows.
