Spawndon No TC was forbidden from 94 until 97 or 98. So it was more less in the hands or feet of the drivers. The NoTC Rule was abondened because it was hard to proove if someone used TC. But Berger Definitely isnt looking as if he is using Traction Control

the cars also dont work well generally when driven sideways. the aerodynamics arent designed that way, and the days when tires were designed for large slip angles and supensions were so tuned ended three decades before. in all ways these are not generally tolerant or rewarding of this sort of driving. it is great to watch though and in this situation it appears to be his fastest option.

iehen Yeah I remeber watchin WRC in the 90's as well, where everyone was sideways all the time because it was the fastest way. It was awesome to watch. F1 is getting back to that a little since the cars have less down-force and power is rising. :)

You can see that Gerhard went wide, so instead of losing speed by tapping the brakes, he stepped on the gas pedal to lose the back end so he could make the turn. What phenomenal skills these drivers had back in the day.

The cars still have very minimal TC these days, and it is needed because of the philosophy of the cars. The ground effect era we’re in requires the cars to be driven on a very smooth limit. You can’t drift them around like this anymore because they’ll just spin out. It’s not the fault of the driver, it’s just down to how the cars are designed today. Also I’m pretty sure half the grid in the 90s used ABS, TC, and automatic/semi-automatic transmissions.

@chioska14 The track was a bit different than it is today, Monaco in 95 had the wall on the inside of the first corner, the swimming pool was very tight and the "schumacher parking" corner had a 90 degree left before hooking back onto the front straightaway instead of a slightly straight line. The cars have improved due to aerodynamics and grip from the tires.

The track is actually slightly tighter (chicane after tunnel) these days, modern cars just have much more downforce, more power with a smoother power delivery and faster gear changes, better quality tyre compounds.

look at turn 1 st devote, look at swimming pool complex, look at entry to rascasse. all have have been opened up substantially, added with what you pointed out, a lot faster these days.

gearchanges are huge, tire improvements are huge, brakes are better, that is huge. downforce improvement generally is huge but not sure if its as decisive at monaco. power delivery helps a lot but a good driver can do amazing things here and as a result id say this is less decisive except for extreme improvements or differences. Track changes render comparison not directly useful- its not the same track anymore.

Matt P No, they've been opened up. At Ste Devote, the barrier at the apex was removed and replaced with a flat(ish) kerb. The pit lane runs to the right of where the barrier originally was, along the right-hand carriageway of the junction (travelling in the direction of the circuit). It has never passed "through the corner". The cars have passed to the left of the traffic island there, on the left-hand carriageway, since Ste Devote was first tightened up, years before this video. The swimming pool and La Racasse have also been opened out, removing barriers. totally agreed. If you compare Senna's best lap time from 1991 (1m20,3s) to Berger's lap time from 1995, you baiscally compare different technical regulations. If you judge drivers only by their best Monaco lap times regardless of the year these lap times were recorded, you would even have to come to the harebrained conclusion that Berger was faster than Senna, since Gerhard set a lap time of 1m20,0s in 1994(!).

I know... that Ferrari was the 412 T2 and the engine was the V12 Type 044/1 at 75º. The V10s i was refering to were from the 1996-2005 era. If you read carefully, i implied the Mclaren MP4/13 of 1998 in the first paragraph. Thats what i was talking about the "good old days". I like the noise of the V12, but V10s were much more performant engines, they were lighter and had less fuel consumption than the Ferrari V12. The only circuit were the V12´s made sense were in the old Hockenein circuit.

I disagree. Look at the onboard perspective between 0:07 and 0:09 , there you can see that the Ferrari 412T2 did not have a round steering wheel. In fact, in 1995 Gerhard Berger was steering the car with this 'pretzel'-shaped steering wheel.

Kimi Räikönnen already beat that time 2003 during the Race. He sets the Fastest Lap of the race with a 1.14.545. So it took "only" 8 years to beat that time :D Räikönnen smashed the pole Lap of R.Schumacher (1.15.259) with an improvement of 7 tenths of a Second. Sorry for the "Nerd-Action" sir!
