If I remember correctly, to land the plane you had to stay below a certain altitude and fly below a certain speed. Then you just flew over the landing track and the plane would *automatically* land itself. It wasn't so hard.

Landing sequence in Blue Max is in fact very easy, i can pull it off every time: 1)Wait for landing sequence signal, to the right of score letter "R" will apear 2)push fire button, letter "R" will be replaced with "L" and speed will start to drop from 200 to 100 3)position yourself directly before runway and modify your alt. to be between 25-30 4)Look at shadow of your plane 5)When that shadow will be over edge (or little further) of runway pull joystick down 6)You don't need to be cautious just pull it down and don't stop till plane hit runway 7)Speed will drop to 0 and you will be left with quite long runway before you, so you can take off easily

Ahh, and looking at your, landing sequences i noticed why you failed. 1)Sometimes you pulled plane to too low altitudes just before runway, every time you land asert that just before runway there is a wall 20 alt. high, try to observe plane shadow rather than plane itself 2)Side wind, most of your crashes was accompanied by side wind ("W" letter at the right of the screen)

Just checked, ive tryed to land couple of times with side wind and didn't crash, every time landing was successfull, maybe you have game version that crash you when you are trying to land with side wind. I tested on version from atarionline.pl atarionline.pl/arch/B/Blue%20Max/Blue%20Max%20%281983%29%28Synapse%20Software%29%28US%29.xex

One moe hypothesis: Maybe you pulling your joy left or right when you are at 1-4 alt.? Just try to go from alt. 30 to 0 continuosly? (only pulling joy down and not stoping or going left or right till you hit runway)

Had this game on the XEGS since 1990. Still loving it. When you gear to L you will se the speed starting to decrease from 200. It has to be down at 100 before you can land without problem.

For the record, modern planes don't have "reverse" either. If you need to back up, you have to either get towed or get out and push. Or more likely, just circle the tarmac.

Nice! I had this for the Atari 800XL on 5 1/4 inch disc by Synapse. I believe to land when the after the screen is beeping flashing, you should see an "L" for landing on the lower right corner. You need to hold the stick to make the plane down till the plane slows and stops. I think it had pilot controls, so you hold pushing down over the runway.

Watch your speed indicator - you will see it drop from 200 (your flying speed) to 100 (your landing speed). When it is at 100 proceed straight down over the runway being careful to give yourself enough room to take (reach 100). I played this game for hours when it came out and after a brief learning curve had no trouble landing. You remind me how much I miss this game! After take off immediately pull HARD to the left or right away from the river to get to the city which has more interesting targets.

Had this game for my C64. The landing was a pain of endless frustration. However, if you got a roll. It felt like a major achievement.

I had/have this for the Commodore 64 on 5 1/4 floppy. Originally published by Synapse Software as another commenter mentioned. The C64 version is identical as far as I can tell, and the landing instructions given in another comment are dead-on. After you bomb or shoot a certain amount of key targets, which either flash blue or are marked by the x, the final level is a city where you bomb a statue, I believe. That ends the game, and drops you back to the beginning.

I had the C64 version back in the day; I don't recall landing being particularly difficult, but not having played the Atari version I can't say if 'feels' the same.

I had this on my 1200XL. So the one thing I can think you're doing is you're driving the plane into the landing strip. It takes a second to actually slow down and stop, so you can be tempted to keep pushing down even though you're already landed, and it crashes the plane. Get to the point you look like you're touching concrete and just leave the controller alone and you should be fine, if that makes sense. It's the fact that it keeps going at normal speed for a second or two that can really throw you and make you want to keep pushing down further.

I'm in the same boat - I wanted to like this game but the faults outweight the pros. At least Zaxxon on the Atari XE/XL is fun and a pretty good port...or if you want something original, there is always Desert Falcon

If you have to play something that is Zaxxon while not being Zaxxon :P then Desert Falcon fits the bill - looks like CGR has reviewed the 2600 and 7800 versions of that but not the XE...

I don't remember landing to be a problem (Atari 800 disk). What is completely unfair is that you can get bombed during repairs and fueling! When you throw in the "1 life" rule, this is unacceptable.

Landing is easy you are doing it very wrong. Don't turn while landing. Just be sure your speed is at 100 then press straight forward to land (normal control). Watch the shadow as you try to land and ignore the plane. The shadow tells you where you are. Landing is not the hard part of this game. Dodging all the flak is. Don't try to land until the shadow is over the runway. Really it's not hard you are just pulling the controller in all sorts of directions instead of straight down to land.

Landing was never that hard. When the "L" comes up on the bottom right, and if you wanted to land, just hit the fire button and you'll speed will drop. As soon as your speed reaches 100, land the plane on the runway.
