The Lettered Classroom I use a similar one to your hand up, except it's "hands up mouths shut", where I put my hand up and they all have to put their hand up and stop talking. I also play "4 behind" a game where the leader will do something for 4 counts (eg tap shoulders, click, tap elbows, basically any body movement) and then the leader moves to a new action while the class does the first 4 counts - so the class is 4 counts behind the leader. Another thing I love is using high energy call & response songs, particularly in other languages! I've learnt so many of these over the years, but my favourite is part of a Brazilian song called Magalenha which is literally just the teacher singing/calling "deh deh de de de deh" and the class repeats it back in the same tune. There are so many more that I like to use which I've picked up from choir!

The Lettered Classroom I use "if you can hear me, touch..." I mix it up all the time. Sometimes I ask to make a mustache, or a silly face. I also lower my volume so they will have to listen for my instructions.

Ashley Walker When I was in 5th, we did something similar, only I had the kids come up with the response. It was super fun to call out, "Hear ye! Hear ye," and hear 25 fifth graders yell back, "SILENCE! The queen of everything wishes to speak!" XD Towards of the end of the year, it evolved into them just saying, "SILENCE, peasants!" ;-)

I so needed this right now! Thank you!! I'm currently student teaching in 1st grade and I've been struggling a little bit with keeping tight transitions. My cooperating teacher uses "Hocus Pocus...everybody focus" a good bit for a call and response. I decided that I needed something more me, so last week, I implemented the McDonalds tagline, "Bada ba ba ba...I'm loving it!". I use it during high energy activities, and the kiddos love it! For more quieter times, I also use "If you can hear me", but instead of clapping, I have my kids touch their nose, pat their head, snap, etc.

I remember one my band teacher in high school used to do. She would call "Squirrel!" And we would have to stop taking, turn and point at the person taking. It was fun and different and we all liked it. And she wasn't the only one who used it, either. All the section leaders and drum majors used it and even other teachers used it!

GREAT! Usually, I use my chime as a more mellow attention getter. I ring the chime and say "Hands on your shoulders" RING, "Hands on your head" RING "Hands behind your ears" and they maintain that position to make sure they have their listening ears and listen in to what I have to say (All of this is said in Spanish). If I need their attention FAST, I use 1,2,3 and they respond with 1,2 eyes on you! (again in Spanish).

I say, "hands on top." and the response is "everybody stop." I really like this because it gives them something to do with their hands.

My class is ocean themed so we use Shark Bait. We also use "Ocean Breeze, "Everybody Freeze! Shhhhhhh..." I also use call and response to release them. I use "Get it? Got it. Good" and "All set?" "You bet!" If anyone has any other ocean themed call-responses, feel free to let me know!

Love this video and your last one, so so helpful. I'm sure I can use these tips.. I am lucky tho as its a club I get to use a whistle for attention. I do also find that if I stand at the front quietly saying nothing, I try to catch one kids attention then it's like a sea of sshhhh running round the room and everyone is quiet. but not gonna lie, I'm pinching all your ideas! love you!!

Hello, does it mean that you check the work of every child - every single day? That sounds like a time-consumer.. I wouldn't be able to do that, even though it would be perfect. What is your thoughts on peer-peer-checking? (sorry for my english, Im from Denmark, and not an english-teacher..)
@BridgingLiteracy7 жыл бұрын
+Malene Høybye - Day-to-day I am only checking to see if work is completed. I am not going through in detail. I do peer to peer checking but I reserve it for the editing process.
