Hatchet and island of the blue dolphins were my fave books as a kid. Not sure if theyre the right age group but maybe worth looking into!! I’ve always been an avid reader and those two books are what started it for me!

You should get a boxset of Harry Potter Books! I was reading on a very high level by the time I was in 4th grade so I know there are going to be some students in your class that could totally read those books like I did! I love them so much!

I LOVE that you have the diverse characters books. As a teacher I feel students choose books based on things they know and what they’ve learned and they wouldn’t be introduced to diverse characters without us introducing them to them. You are an amazing teacher and I’m looking forward to seeing more vlogs!! Good luck this year!!

I don’t think that comment was offended but could see potential issues among students. Especially if you have “diverse” students who aren’t apart of the majority and may already have experiences with being singled out before they get to you. It’s very easy for people to say others are easily offended when they don’t have experience with being singled out and don’t have positive representation across various platforms. I think just saying that section is filled with highly praised books but many of the books in your library could be in this category will eliminate some potential issues. 😊😊
@ElementaryInTheMitten
@ElementaryInTheMitten 6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! I think that with a thorough explanation as well as some modeling, the risk of potential issues definitely goes down. Technically the word "diversity" itself just means "variety" and every single child in my class will be different from the kids sitting next to them - so I think explaining it in that way is important!! At the beginning of the year, this basket will be filled with books that I've loved and learned from, but as the year goes on, I will encourage kids to recommend books to go into that basket as they read more and feel more comfortable sharing. I don't want this library to be my library, but truly the class's library. :)

Hello Kim, My name is Keyla and I'm just like you this is going to be my first year teaching and I will be teaching fourth grade and I'm super excited. Hopefully, soon I will begin fixing my classroom. I live in New York and we come back until the last week of August, I would like to ask you if you can explain a little more about the 40 book challenge because I would like to implement in my classroom. Thanks for the idea. I am reading the book right now the book whisperer to learn more about it. Can you please tell me how are you going to implement it in your classroom. I would really appreciate thank you so much. Congratulation and I wish you have a wonderful and amazing school years.

If you still need more books for your library you should check out a website called the book bundles. The books are used but good quality and cheap. Their big thing is a cubic foot box for 50 dollars, which is about 100 books. You do have to check periodically though, the exact boxes they offer at a time varies because all of the books are donated to them.

Love your library! And I think you explained the diverse character section very well. Its important for children to embrace if they are different but also show others not to single other children out because of it or bully them in any way. I see and hear about it a lot where kids don't like to hang out or play with others that are different. My niece told me one day about a younger student that would sit alone at lunch because he had ADHD and other kids just didn't understand why he acted differently from them . Luckily, my family helped bring her up right; she sat with him so he would not be alone and other kids ended up finding him "cool" because she did that. Bless her kind soul.

What if you hole punch the labels for the tins (dull, erasers, etc) and then loop some ribbon through it and hot glue the ribbon to the tin? Idk if that makes sense haha but just a thought! That way the labels won’t get too bent or messed up by hot gluing them :) Love the library btw! How did you make the labels if you don’t mind me asking?

I honestly appreciate that you took the time to speak in detail about your diversity bin! No disrespect to other commenters, but I see them telling you to brush off "offended people". At the end of the day, you're an educator, and if there's a possibility a student could feel alienated it's worth discussing! Diversity can be a sensitive subject, and we as teachers need to be sensitive to people's feelings lol. I can tell you're making a serious effort to represent students from all walks of life, I think the only tricky subject is that when some people see only one select bin labeled as "diversity", at first glance it can be mistakenly taken as if there's a "standard" kind of person (the rest of your big library) and then all other kinds of people get pushed to one bin. But you seem very well spoken and genuine and should not have trouble communicating your meaning to students/parents. Gorgeous library!

Just be prepared.. You can explain everything in the tiniest detail and someone, somewhere will be offended or not agree with it. It is just the nature of the times these days. I seriously give teachers so much credit for what they have to go through and deal with.

Teachers have to be careful. Sometimes by not addressing certain cultures, races and disabilities you can single out a child. I personally think it is good to expose children to different things. All I was saying is it is hard to please everyone these days.

I don’t understand why anybody would be offended by that category. It was nice of you to apologize, but it was not necessary. I also have a section of books with “ diverse character” mainly so my students can read about each other’s culture and history.
@arihartsfield2868
@arihartsfield2868 6 жыл бұрын
Marisol Padilla I am not offended but I understand why people are. Kids now are starting understand things like racial discrimination and people with physical mental illness and social class. I would think it would be better to just have realistic fiction because the more popular books now for kids are about all different people from all different backgrounds. We just don’t want a kid to get singled out if their situation is in the diversity bin and kids single them out.

Loved how the library came out! Thinking of using those Walmart bins in my library too! Definitely invest in making a Scholastic wishlist to share with parents and/or friends so you can rack up points to use on teacher stuff on their website. They have a TON of great things and books for teachers there as well!
