I was a professional detailer back in the late 80's, so I worked mostly on this kind of paint. Back then most dealerships didn't even have a detail department so they would send their trade-ins to us. Usually anything older than 3 years got cut. It was just easier in the long run. I say this for your future reference. We used rotary polishers on the paint back then and I still swear by them. Liquid compound will work fine, just remember that heavy compound has to be at less rpm(2000) liquid compound no more than 4000 rpm. All my socks are black.

I thought the sequence of events was… Rubbing compound, then polishing compound, then clay bar. Is this different for the old style paint?
@terrybuckley15562 жыл бұрын
@@stevedoe1630 Correct, except for the clay bar. The rubbing compound applied with rotary polisher that we used was very abrasive, so if that didn't remove any imperfections nothing will short of wet sanding. The final step was a cleaner/wax.

I'm guessing the key to maintaining a car with single stage paint is to regularly wax it to keep the environment off the paint? Use it as a stand-in for the clearcoat.

Something I would prioritize is getting a paint thickness gauge to verify how much material you have to work with before you start correcting. With a car that old, original, and valuable it's a cheap way to identify any areas that are already thinned by prior work you may not be aware of. Even something in the $50 range on Amazon would be a decent starting point; no need to spend a ton on a DeFelsko or Elcometer when you're not doing corrections full-time.

When I was a paint sprayer for VW/Audi back in the early 90's we used farecla G3 and G10 compound. It was strictly trade only products back then but you can get it now and with choices available. I still have a small tub in my garage which is at least 20 years old. Just a smell of that takes me back to happy memories of painting these old cars. The paint we used was Glasurit (not sure on the spelling) but that was what we had to use. We did a re-shell on one of these quattro's in that exact colour..was the best car I ever painted.

One purpose of the side vent near the rear quarter panel is it allows the release pressure that builds up inside the car when not in use (especially if parked outside on a hot day).

A few of the BMWs I own have these vents hidden behind the rear bumper cover which I found neat.

It also vents pressure when closing the doors so they close easier as well as a ventilation outlet for flow through ventilation.
@barnardward52932 жыл бұрын
A lot of cars have a flow-through ventilation system. The deal was that air entered the car through the dash vents and/or open windows and was sucked out through vents positioned at the rear of the cabin in an aerodynamically low pressure area. The first car I had with such a system was a 1966 (English) Ford Cortina. Most European cars have had some variation on the system ever since the 60s.

Meguiars #7 for restoring single stage paint. It's an older product that is outclassed by modern alternatives for clear coats, but it sings on single stage. #7 has no protection so it will have to be topped with a sealant or a wax. I would again keep it vintage and use a carnauba wax instead of a modern sealant. This will be higher maintenance than a sealant, but the carnauba shine will have more of a glow instead of a deep gloss that will look better on vintage metal. Sweet ride!

I'm using a Karcher steamer to get the stubborn dirt from seals and weather strips. It uses some pressure, but not very high. The temperature of the steam does the job perfectly to get any mold or tarry dirt out of the crannies. And what is most important (except removing dirt of course), you don't use any chemicals in the process

Its great you have OCD on the wheels Sarah (or is it just normal old school attention to detail and pride in one's work). When you get to the wheels, check for the correct paint code on the quattroforum and get the shop to mix it as it's a very specific colour. Once done, use a wheel wax or Supagard on the inside of the rims as this forms a layer against brake dust and road grime and makes it a heck of a lot easier to clean next time. On the lightbulbs, take them out of the board with a cloth and polish the glass bulb as this removes the moisture/dust mix that builds up and causes the glass to heat sink and reduces the life of the bulbs.

Probably already been said- the vents in the rear quarters are for interior ventilation. Similar to the plastic louvered vents under modern rear bumper covers. The fuel tank is sealed inside the trunk and all venting of the tank is dealt with externally. One of the main reasons for putting the tank here is the rear-wheel differential living down in the usual spot. The front-drive Audi coupe also shared this fuel tank location, as the Quattro was the original, where the coupe was a secondary, affordable model based on the UrQ. I may or may not have had a couple of these cars LOL! Best sounding engine of all time to my ears!

One advantage to single stage, particularly solid colors, is that rock chips are very easy to repair.Dab in color to fill the chip to the same level as the old paint and at that point you can use some ultra fine and wet sand it smooth. Buff it off and you'll never see the damage. I'm also thinking that the vents are for the interior too. You have to relieve the pressure inside the car some way so that the heater fan is efficient and that probably is the way.
