Also, is anyone else bothered by the bear in the background staring at his black lab? Does Clay not realize it is behind him?

Something about the way he talks... I've never wanted to kill a bear in my life and right now if he told me "you gotta hunt in nothing but a yellow feathery g-string to kill a bear" I'd be getting some goofy looks at the gas station at 430am. Going to try and fill the bear tag VA has always forced upon me this year largely due to Clay.

I'm curious, regarding the last point of "guarding the gate," you say that 78% of Americans support hunting if the animal is used for food, and that bears are--by hopefully most bear hunters. I am a hunter in Idaho--what do you think of the fact that Idaho does not require a bear hunter to pack out any bear meat? They only require that you pack out the hide and skull. I personally think that should be considered waste of game, same as not packing out your quarters, backstrap and tenderloin from a harvested elk or deer. What do you think? Do you think this rule promotes the misunderstanding (or potentially promotes the shameful action for some hunters) that bear hunting is only for the rug, etc.?

This is a quote from the general wildlife laws from the IDFG big game rules n regs: "Waste of Game Hunters are required to remove and care for the edible meat of big game animals, except black bears, mountain lions and gray wolves. This includes the meat from hind quarters as far down as the hock, meat of the front quarters as far down as the knee and meat along the backbone which is the loin and tenderloin. It does not include meat of the head or neck, meat covering or between the ribs, internal organs, or meat on the bones after close trimming." I've heard mountain lion is edible and delicious as well and should probably also be required to take as part of the harvest, in my opinion.

Christina - I think that’s a good question. I wouldn’t try to speak for Clay, but he goes specifically into this very topic not just in Idaho but for all of the U.S. on a great podcast with Mark Kenyon on “Wired to Hunt.” Suffice it to say, he agrees with you - but give that podcast a listen, it’s very informative and an easy listen, although it will have some overlap with this video.

We think all black bear meat should be regulated just like other big game in terms of wanton waste - it should be eaten and utilized.

You got to get rid of the music in the background during the podcast. We’re trying to hear Clay talk! Who plays music in the background of an interview on a podcast the entire time?! Cmon guys! 😂
