When I spoke with the people at Hex about an issue with my pen, they made it clear that the only part of the pen that was 3 D printed was the helical barrel. The cap, section, and finial are machined from acrylic. Unless something has changed recently, this is just like my pen.

I just recently had some ink misers printed by PCBway in their clear 8001 resin (I think) with oil spray finish. Price was pretty reasonable, though shipping cost more than the parts. But they came out just as clear as that pen. I was also shocked at how transparent they were. It looked like turned and polished acrylic.

You're killin' me, Smalls! I have been doing so well on my pen buying fast, and then you show me this one! Fortunately for me, it is just pricey enough that I would have to think about it a while anyway, but this is one of the most interesting pens I have seen. What a beauty! Is the ink channel actually printed into the wall of the body so that it is all one piece? It makes me wonder if they could do other patterns with the ink channel - a tighter spiral, diamond grid, square grid, straight tubes, etc. I suppose some patterns might be present technical issues or structural limitations.

Very impressive. Resin is tough to print. Yes it is good for details but getting parts dimension accurate is an art. The resin doesn't stop curing and continues to shrink over UV exposure time. Plus some of the clear resins start turning yellow. That pen also looks like a good way of having an eyedropper pin with lower capacity in order to minimize the air pocket that will warm in your hand and cause a burp.
@Doodlebud7 күн бұрын
Yeah the mention to avoid direct UV sunlight with the pen. I keep my pens in a case when I use them so I haven;t had any issues with this one or my other hex pen.

@Bunnyisms5 күн бұрын
Bock and JoWo 6 nibs are not cross compatible. Aside from having a different collar, the nibs have a different curvature underneath so they don't fit each other's feeds properly. If you have skills in repairing fountain pens, pulling nibs and setting feeds, there are ways, but for most people this is not an option

I’m going to buy one of those, when I have the discretionary money available. Not sure what ink I’m going to put in it, and I have yet to decide whether it will be one of my few pens that always has the same ink in. Is there any relation to Additive pens? The design is pretty identical.
@manuelsalazar39388 күн бұрын
I was thinking the same, I was pretty sure he also presented the pen from Additive... But not quite sure 🤔
@Doodlebud7 күн бұрын
Nope different company. Additive has a simple spiral design inside. This DNA strand is much more complicated from a design perspective. The spiral design is a couple simple commands in CAD, but this design is much more complicated. Not taking away from additive pens as they look great tool, but this is more complicated from a design and printing perspective.
@manuelsalazar39388 күн бұрын
This pen would be almost perfect if they did a clear nib housing and feeder, if Jinhao can, they can too 😅 And yes, I'm curious if they copied the design (or at least the idea) from Additive pens 🤷
@Doodlebud7 күн бұрын
Not sure who did it first but it doens't really matter. The shape on the Additive pens is actually pretty simple to draw up in CAD. The DNA strand is more complicated from a design perspective
@philnaunton71818 күн бұрын
I don't know about this one..... It seems that the "cool factor" costs quite a lot in the ink volume possible. Maybe that is why the pen is so long.
@bigaspaulo8 күн бұрын
The Opus 88 Jazz, which looks almost identical on the outside to this pen, has a *massive* ink capacity in comparison.
@Doodlebud7 күн бұрын
I don't think max ink capacity was the objective with this one. More doing things that can only be done with 3D printing. Just making a hollow barrel wouldn't make this any different for any basic cigar pen out there so it couldn't really compete with those. This one is having fun and taking advantage of the unique properties of 3D printing. No way to machine that DNA strand inside of a pen body
