Another good clip Alex. The only thing I would say though is vinegar won't neutralize the salt, vinegar is in fact acidic therefore possibly making the issue worse. The detergent will help neutralize the salt / acidic vinegar ( like when they acid wash pavers and tiles - they have a neutralising solution which is essentially just detergent in a bottle ) however I would be more inclined to hit it all underneath with just the detergent alone and then give it all a sound dose of Inox or similar. I wouldn't want to be adding any acid of any kind inside chassis rails, under metal guards etc. Great clip though as always. Cheers mate

Your old patrol is the reason I got a GU Patrol for my first car I live in Perth too 6164 and I’d love to come out with you one time and go 4wding. Show you my patrol that I’ve built up over the last year and a half.

Great video mate. A few good tips there. I will definitely be using the vinegar and soap trick. Good job.

You really need a garden sprayer to put on the vinegar / dish washing soap mix. The big ones with a separate head and flexible hose are awesome for this job as you can get into all the nooks and crannies easily and keep the stinging spray away from your eyes.

I would also recommend you spray all the under bonnet electricals with WD40 and then go down to your local car wash and give the whole car a good blast off underneath and under the bonnet . Then take it for a drive to dry off . Most modern vehicles will not have any starting issues after water blasting the motor but kind off stay away from the coils and injectors and electrical boxes and concentrate on the sides of the engine , exhaust and down towards the front end suspension more . I don't go on the beach anymore but that's what I did every time I came off the beach straight to the car wash and then wash it again at home . I never had anyone say after lifting the bonnet , oh I can see you went onto the beach a lot but it still does damage to your vehicle .

I also used fish oil at one point and soon afterwards got sand stuck to all the underside. A year on I am still struggling to get some bits off. Would be great if you could reveal your ultimate degreaser solution.

Great vid thanks and enjoyed the WA humour. Lanno/wedge/cervantes is good fun.Would love to see a vid on how to spot rust under your car, I have no idea whether the cleaning I do is working or not (besides the lack of any immediately obvious rust). Maybe show your car vs someone's that has rust due to beach driving?

Hi mate. How come you spray straight over the rust with the black paint? Does the black paint actually stay on? I’ve got a tiny amount of surface rust I want to get on top of

If I was doing this now I'd get some rust converting paint. One product to kill the rust and leave a nice black coating. Easily available at any old hardware or auto store 🙂

My neighbour covers every bit of exposed metal in a 50/50 Fish Oil / Diesel Mix. It never dries! I know realise why i have black paint on my rims, the previous owner tried to dodgy in the insides up to hide the CV issues

Fisholine is awesome at stopping rust BUT you can't just paint it on an leave it. You are right, it never seems to dry, it stinks and is sticky as hell. It has to be painted over but once it has been put on, it stops rust in its tracks.

Concerned about the black paint, wouldn't it just be hiding it, and could the rust still work away underneath? Looks great but you've just hiden it is all, right?
@Alex.G
@Alex.G 4 жыл бұрын
Legitimate concern there! I'm not particularly worried especially as it was not so much rusty as just bare. 2 years on there's no rust there. But, it could still be a good idea to use a slightly more expensive rust kill paint to really be sure

Have you tried Innox mate? as a form of rust prevention? Or do you prefer to Lanolin

Hey I know this is over a year later, but do you think baking soda will work as well for neutralizing salt? How's the rust prevention working out a year later? Buying a hose end sprayer for doing this thanks to your preventive methods. I'm new to the 4x4 scene but looking for ways to protect my investment.
@Alex.G
@Alex.G 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how baking soda would go but hey, anything is better than leaving the salt sit there! The lanolin oil coating is something you'd probably have to apply every 6 months or so, that's about how often I do it.

That black paint does not stop the rust at all. You'd need to blast the surface rust off first, before applying the paint.

I'm having a hard time looking for citra clean degreaser for cleaning the chassis (not good on body actually stains the paint) used to use at the place used to work at amazing stuff it would eat the sand and dust and brighten the chassis color really good making tires look natural black with no shine

Cheap b*stard life hack for when you forgot to lanolin your car before heading to many beaches, get some aerosol cooking oil (I used canola as it smells slightly less than a chip shop & was on offer in Coles) & spray anything that doesn't get banging hot underneath your vehicle. Did a week on Moreton & then heaps of NSW beaches with simple hose downs clearing all the crap off enough to go again. No idea if it has any rust preventing properties as I can't find a canola to ask, however it did the job I wanted splendidly & all for $3. Banger!
@Alex.G
@Alex.G 7 жыл бұрын
Yes! I'm a cheap b*stard and hence, I love this idea haha! That's a top idea, cos it washes off easier when the crap gets stuck in it. Plus...I'd rather deal with the lightly fish and chip scented undercarriage than the off fishy smell you get with fish oil.

Intents Offroad Yeah, it was a real last minute thing as I totally forgot & just went for the cheapest thing I could find in Coles, other than the really cheap olive oil which would've made me want Mediterranean food constantly. 1 can sorted my otherwise moderately surface rusty 98 GU & gave the chassis a wet look like 'Soul Glow' from Coming To America for a couple of weeks 😀

I used to use straight lanotech but have switched tk KO-66 knock out rust. knockout-rust.com.au Its a mixture of lanolin, fishoil and bitumen. It leaves everything black and creates a sacrificial layer. Just need a solid 2 weeks to dry!
