A local dealership in my area said the task in your video would cost $500 USD in labour plus shop supplies. They also said a hybrid certified mechanic would be required because the high voltage battery had to be turned off during the maintenance task. Strange how a 12 volt fan needs the 600 volt battery turned off. After watching you video, the entire task took me ten minutes. I wasn't even rushing. Best part of it all, my fan was perfectly clean after ten years and 80,000 miles of city driving. The dealership said I should have them do this task every fifty thousand miles/five years in order to keep the fan from seizing up and ruining my battery. Talk about a license to print money.

I had to spend an extra 15 dollars to get a shit ton of sockets (ikeep in. Mind we only needed the 12 mm socket but my hardware store only had a pack) and only spent 30 minutes at a gas station doing what this guy did and it worked. I didn't even go to my local mechanic but if he was going to charge he couldn't charge more than 90 (the hourly labor rate and the minimum needed to get a mechanic to do somethint) I should start testing my mechanics honesty

They do that for people who smoke / have pets. Tobacco residue + pet hair is the worst case scenario for these and if that battery overheats ti's quite literally done so they do everything they can to avoid that. Skeezy that they charge for it, but I guess they gotta pay for the Snap-Ons some how...

Thank you for this video. I found the video in 2023 and performed the procedure on my 2013 Camry Hybrid having 120K miles. I followed the steps and discovered I had no mesh and the fan was completely clean. Probably due to my environment and basic family use without pets. It was fascinating learning the entire seat is a 10lb piece of foam and I am glad I did it myself as it also allowed me to vacuum years of legos/froot loops/lucky charm non-marshamallows under the seat. I saved $470+tax in WA, so easily over $500 for what turned out to be a complete non-issue.

Brilliant. The Australian model is pretty much identical, so I just followed this video and had it done in 20 minutes. It's been serviced by Toyota dealers ever since new, but the filter was clogged maybe 50% (I had to use a soft brush to clean the dirt on the filter before the vacuum would move the rest) - I think the dealer had never even looked at it. The fan was in good condition, though. I've got to do my wife's 2011 model now. That's a different system (no filter) and looks like a lot more disassembly, but MUST be done.

This is, by far, the best video I have seen on Camry hybrid battery fan maintenance, however it includes unrequired steps for just the filter which is what most need. Yours was clean as will be for most 2012--2017 models unlike older models without a filter and thus have a dirty fan. 2018+ put the filter and battery under the rear seat.

Excellent, many thanks. Took your advice and although the models were different here in Aussie, basically most things were exactly as you side. Very happy with the results. The outside of the airvent filter was 30% est blocked with lint but the fins of the fan very clean, after 7yrs and 180,000km in Perth. Very helpful, thanks! I really enjoy snubbing the dealer service centers--even if it takes a couple of hours. Moreover, I found that they didn't put a filter on the cabin intake at the factory! Luckily it is low tech, and I just made my own. I know that they didn't put it on at the factory because I bought my Camry hybrid new and the battery cooling fan had never been serviced before. Getting the seat bottom off was the only difficulty--had to pry it up. Putting it back was easy--I just lined it up and sat down on it hard.

So far I have not been able to find anything to show what happens beyond that fan or what is in there. if there are cooling fins and the motor is badly clogged, then you can imagine how filthy it could potentially be in there. I would think the higher charge would be to thoroughly clean the entire air duct... but then again they charge $50 labor to replace the cabin air filter (which takes 5 minutes in my Prius.) Great video! So far my biggest save at toyota was an 86 celica I purchased that had been vandalized in the 90's. They wanted to charge me $1580 to get the right headlight to pop up. (motor and computer fail.) In 20 minutes I had determined that a wire was broken. Could not find the break so I replaced the whole wire through the firewall and to the computer. Cost me ten cents. Luckily I was able to purchase the service manual... but be sure they would not have put the old motor and computer back in once they installed new and it did not work.

@munkiebunz33 жыл бұрын
I gave the tutorial in a way where my audience didn't have to remove any electrical connectors. Having a novice try to remove a decade old electrical connector = broken connectors. When I was with Mercedes-Benz no soldering or repairs were done on the SRS wiring and it was a replacement of the entire affected harness (seat bolster had SRS connector). I was unsure of the parts availability of the electrical connectors so I went with a simple method that almost guarantees necessary things don't break. If Toyota has the connector available & you have the skills and tools to re-pin a connector, have at it. I believe I included a link to another video that shows the battery pack being removed. That video includes the fan removal. You might need to remove some trim panels in the trunk for access to some bolts. Or if you have some 1/4 inch drive swivel sockets, extension and a ratchet you might be able to do it without removal. If you have a lot of gunk on the blades assume you already have had some fuzz go into the battery pack vent passages. So vacuuming while cleaning shouldn't introduce much more.

Removing the fan would be at most an extra 0.3 hr by the book. That doesn't justify the 2x rate. Why does every other dealership quote $350 but I was quoted $750? Awesome video. I had just found out how critical the battery air flow was so I purchased a filter to change it, 2015 Camry Hybrid. after watching you video and looking at my car I came up with an easy hack. I took a 4 inch straight 1/4" air nozzle put it through a thin plastic that was in the trash. I got out my shop vac and put the hose over the nozzle and plastic. Then I pocked it thru and air vent cover holes and sucked out the dirt. It worked perfect.
@munkiebunz34 жыл бұрын
That's totally awesome! Just peek to see if your fan is clean. You can peak without using any tools and without any disassembly. Just drop down the seat, pop just two of the tabs (at the fan and at the middle) to peek inside the fan. If it's dirty, you technically CAN do the whole thing without removing the bolster but it takes some finesse to put it back in. Great hack! Did you take a video?

This is great thanks so much @munkiebunz3. I have been trying to find the torque measurements. I can find this specific ones. Any idea or what I should be looking for when searching?

Thank you for the video .we can take the fan out and clean ? I have 2015 hybrid I have to do this my is 80k miles and your?
@munkiebunz34 жыл бұрын
If you decide to take out the fan that is when Toyota starts to recommend disconnecting batteries. That leads to potentially more issues for a non-tech. If you have a vacuum, it's really good at cleaning the fan. Try it the easy way first.

Just wondering what is the purpose of removing the two bolts? I didn't see the reason to do this if just looking at the fan and possibly changing the filter out or cleaning? Please explain.
@matthewpearson64343 жыл бұрын
I'm now re-watching video and thinking those two bolts must give you the ability to lower the seat and take out the side panel. Thanks think I figured it out. Great video.
@munkiebunz33 жыл бұрын
This is an instruction video on how to clean your fan and filter. If you want to clean the fan, everything is required. If you just want to look at stuff, you don't have to do anything I demonstrated.

@@munkiebunz3 great video very thorough and easy to understand was just making sure if I’m just changing the filter do I need to take the bolts off? I just don’t have a torque wrench.
@munkiebunz33 жыл бұрын
Technically there's not really a filter, just some fishnet sock. You don't have to remove the bolster if you have a strong enough vacuum with a small enough tip. You'll definitely want to remove the bolts for the side bolster to replace the "filter" and then make sure you don't pinch the wires on reassembly. I don't remember the torque specs so Google the forums. You can buy a torque wrench from a local auto parts store for maybe about $50.

I have a 08 camry hybrid and i just got a P0A80 code. Nothing on the dash board. Just on my OBD2. The car is functioning %100. Mpg is great and everything is fine. Can this be because of that dust buildup??
@munkiebunz34 жыл бұрын
YES, That is one possibility! The 08 has a different location for the filter and if this is the first time you've heard about it then I would recommend you get that cleaned up first as that's free if you do it yourself. Clear the code and see if it returns. If so then it's probably a battery pack issue. You should sign up for some forums.

thank you so much. I have the exact same car. What is the torque spec for the 12 mm bolts?
@munkiebunz33 жыл бұрын
It's been so long that I forgot. I can't remember where I found the specs but I think you can get a repair manual for the non-hybrid off the bookshelf. The seat bolster torque specs should be the same.

Thank you for this video! Now, how do I reset the "Service Hybrid Cooling System" reminder light that automatically came on at 150k?
@munkiebunz33 жыл бұрын
I believe that can be cleared by an OBD II scanner. You can probably borrow one at your local auto parts store such as Auto Zone or O'Reilly.
@ZachariahWiedeman2 жыл бұрын
@TypicalAnon350 I have since learned that it was triggered by the fact that the vents were so clogged, not much air was getting to the battery. It was not automatic based on mileage.

Quick question, I have a 2017 Camry Hybrid. Does my car have a hybrid filter that I have to replace or do I just vacuum out the fan? Thank you in advance for your time and video!
@munkiebunz33 жыл бұрын
Not sure. Mine just had a coarse mesh that was taped over the inlet & no mesh in the bolster opening. The dealer told me they would install a filter but didn't give me a separate price or part number for my vehicle. If you look at the inlet in the aide bolster you will probably be able to see if you have a mesh or a filter. If you can't see the mesh due to thick dust film then assume you might have to vacuum the fan. The mesh is not as good as your dryer filter.

Question: When you get to the fan motor, can you simple just remove the motor avoiding the risk of getting the dirt out with a couple more screws and really clean it out properly without the concern of getting dirt deeper in the hybrid system? Thank you and good video! I so plan to do this in the future! I bought a 2016 Toyota Camry Le almost 2 weeks ago and not wasting time learning as much as I can about it! Thank you for any reply(s) you can give!
@munkiebunz33 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. However, if you have a great vacuum, you don't need to worry about that extra step. Once you have the seat down you can examine your needs. The fan is held by 3 bolts but I can't remember if you have to pull the trunk liner for access. Fan runs on the 12v system so it's safe to disconnect.

How often should we do this like every oil change or mileage ? Are their any other hidden filters
@munkiebunz33 жыл бұрын
Depends on how much you drive, if you have passengers or pets. I did mine at 50k, it was as you saw in the video but a small film like when you clean the lint trap after a light laundry load. Filter depends on your model year. Prior to 2012 they had a filter in the parcel shelf. My 2014 had zero filter except for that fishnet "filter". If you disassemble, just keep track of the order of disassembly if you happen to have another filter that mine didn't.

I just bought a 2021 Camry Le Hybrid and am a new car owner and am anticipating having to do this kind of regular maintenance for a hybrid car in the future. Will these same exact steps still apply for 2021 model? Are all the nuts in the same area?
@munkiebunz33 жыл бұрын
Starting in 2018 they changed the location of the battery & battery cooling system. So, your answer is "no, these instructions are not applicable to your 2021 camry. Do not follow these directions which are only for the 2012-2017 camry hybrid."
