Swamp cooler can be drain on a daily basis plus cleaning it every week during summer will prolong its function. There is a 2 inches diameter knockout hole cover beneath the tank's left side portion for drainage/plug can use it whenever. I regularly drain its dirty water each every 72 hours. Can clean the pump, cooling pads, hoses, and the dripper using dish soap. My cooling pads has only little amount of hard water everytime, well good for me! I installed automatic temperature sensor also set at 78°F indoor temperature.

A cheep $5 garden sprayer from Walmart (Don't use it for anything else) White Vinigar diluted 40% with water. Take the unit cover off with the pads still attached to the cover spray the pads well (front and back) with the garden sprayer of vinigar, let it sit. Then drain the unit of the water. Spray the inside of the unit with the garden sprayer. Then I hose the pads clean and then the inside of the unit. Then with a rag and water wipe the fan blades. I do this at the start of the season to use the unit, the middle, and at the end before draining the unit for the season. Pads are 5 years old and stillin good shape. The vinigar cleans the calicum and disinfects. I don't need to wear gloves, smell dangerous chemicals, or worry about the pets or kids getting sick from it. $ 2.25 for a gal. and I only use 1/2 a gal. I have drip line attached to the bleeder line with a watering head that can beshut off or adjusted to control thebackon water flow.Once a week after the sun goes down, I shut the unit off and open the water head into my plants for about 30-45 minutes. Then I wait about 10 minutes and turn the unit back on. I have also lightly sprayed the outside of the unit with the cooler pads while it is running to give it a fresh smell in the house. I hope this helps someone. P.S. we have very hard water here and I do not have filtered watergoing to the unit.

Wow, that sounds like a great tip! I have a swamp cooler on the roof. Same thing I'd think.

Downey is not a cleaner it's a softener, results in faster pad degrading. Found this out the hard way sadly.

Just add a fair bit of viniger to the water tank and let the pump run it will clean the pads that way. Much better than evaporated chemicals! That being said... CLR is my next choice that stuff is great!

I also have a Bonaire 5900, great cooler! Thanks for your videos, was glad to find someone else that uses CLR to clean the pads. Ever since day one, the unit is a little over a year old now, I have had an odd issue that I hope you might have experienced, or perhaps it is two issues. First, the air coming from the top half is warmer than the bottom half, only slightly, but noticeable. Second, the very top INSIDE of the front pad is bone dry. While the unit is running, I take a flashlight and look at the inside of the pad, through the fan. Of what I am able to see of the pads appears to be adequately wet, except for the very top of the front pad, inside only. The outside of the pad is wet. Any ideas? Thanks!

Did you knockout the knockout or drill it? Not sure how trying to knock it out on that plastic material would work.

Steven Lightner normally you'll see there is a big knock out there at the left side, but I keep it intact. I just drilled a hole for regular draining. Thank you.
