Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Hi Zach, you are such a fine example of the "work ethic" and the need to get jobs done even if unpleasant. I would tend to procrastinate and that doesn't work on the farm. Thanks for showing the "less than fun chores" as well the super neat chores such as seeding or combining. I have a question on the micro-managing. You mention "down to the acre level" but it seems to me that you are adjusting to even smaller pieces of land -- which is incredible when you think back even a few years ago. Thanks for making the investments that keep food production high at a reasonable cost to the consumer. A great video. Thanks!! - Dean from Edina

Thanks again Dean!! Always appreciate your thoughts! The acres are managed at a 1-2.5 acre level but usually the programs we use, use an algorithm to blend the acres together based on averages, so there aren't hard breaks or 'lines' between the acres for certain applications. Did I make that clear as mud? Maybe it wasn't even what you were asking?!

To the voice of David Attenborough: A adult male Millennial Farmer approaches and starts work on his food storage system to get ready for corn eating season, their species will be very busy in the next coming months but they will be storing food for the winter. Soon they will enter hibernation as the cold winter approaches they will crawl into their caves and settle down for the winter and wake up back again for the warm spring weather.

... This species does not hibernate like other hibernating mammals. If we take a look inside the hive, we will see them working along on what looks like maintenance tasks. We do not know if there is any significant energy savings to their method. It seems that they offset the lack of energy saving with a steady stream of hamburgers that keeps them going through the long cold winter.

I firmly believe the agri is very important to the country and I accept that it is a big industry and certainly farmers have done nothing directly to bring on this trade war------but I don't accept that exports of agri products is essential to the country's wellbeing. If some foreign buyer choses to buy from Canada or Brazil etc. then that's the risk the industry takes with being involved in foreign trade. There have been millions of workers who have lost their jobs when industry moved south, moved out of country or closed down, automated, etc. and very, very rarely did gov't ever step in to support them continuing to work (welfare). Why should farmers be treated any differently? We live in a supply and demand world, and you can't control the demand (except through voting perhaps) isn't that part of the business? BTW, if X amount of corn and beans aren't going to China but the farmers are still selling them, where are they going? What middle man or corporate owners are getting rich through this many billion dollar welfare set up? I know its not the farmers, but some where somebody is lining their pockets; probably one of the swamp creatures, since the swamp is as big as ever. I'm really impressed with your interest in taking care of the soil; without good soil we can never have good consistent farming. Power to the earth worms!

I don't think the subsidies are going to stop anytime within the next 3-5 years, the Chinese buying market has diversified to much now for prices to have any large up swings. My grandfather leased 40,000 acres in Haskell County Tx, He farmed 30,000 acres in Cotton and Maase. He had 52 head of Angus cattle on 5,000 acres with a creek running through it . He would rest 5,000 acres each year, and rotate which land rested each year. He would grow hay in a field across from the barn as needed. He would fill the barn with hay and pull bails each morning to throw over the fence so the cows could choose to eat hay each day, or the natural grass that grew there. I learned to drive on that farm, and learned how to use a shotgun. He had a Winchester 12 gauge auto that was rigged to hold 8 shells. In summer, I would spend a couple of weeks there, and he would choose that time to rotate the hay in the barn, and have to shoot the rattle snakes that we would come across between hay bales.

Don'T get me wrong dude and I don'T even know which side of the spectrum you are leaning towards but the last thing, especially the farmers, can expect from the Trump administration is a healthy trade economy. Although he is great at rallying people with all sorts of stuff the only ones Trump is indeed looking out for is the wellbeing of his rich friends getting richer.

I would consider using a vacuum truck to wash down and suck out your grain pits. No confined space entry, no messing around with a pump, no stinky water pumped out to the surface ( and the mud it creates) No having to run absorptive corn through to get that last little bit of water, no having to run your fans or clean out the bins. A Millennial`s dream come true!

The week before you gotta go down in the pit, use some riddex septic enzyme down in the muck if the "water" is low put enough extra in so the riddex can work. Then when you suck it out the smelly stuff is partly brokedown/eaten by the enzymes. Not so stinky.

Cleaning the pits without getting inside makes me happy. I cringe when people do a Confined Space without the proper safety devices. There’s been too many Farmers dying doing things like that

Curious, would that stinky rotten, smells like athletes foot socks, make a good manure? And, what do you use for soil enrichment? Do you personally just use a spray truck with nitrates and such?

I hope you don’t get the same weather as what is forecasted in my area of south west Saskatchewan.... we are suppose to get 40cm of snow starting tomorrow! And we still have 6000 left to harvest 😫

You should sell individual acres to subscribers and supporters, they could then keep track through your videos of how their acres are doing and what their acres yield is predicted to be and then eventually is. I bet people would buy acres :)

I'm just curious, why you wouldn't use a hot water pressure washer to hose down the inside of those grain pits, now that would make quick easy work of a stinky job! - Dave

For that little bit of water left at the bottom, a Shop Vac and 1/2" or 3/4" poly tubing at the end of your vac hose. It will suck that last bit of water right out.

I know your dad of course wants to see you get max yield possible, but I wonder if he is just a little bit like "I told you so" with the no-till. I know you said he has had the worst experiences with it over the years. I bet he has kept his eye on that 7 acre field just to see if he was right or not :)
