This is cleaning the transmission and pump from that 89 Whirlpool machine which I bought most of the parts for $40.
Just taking a rag to it with some LA's Totally Awesome, and then Kerosene for the much more grimy, stuck-on stuff.

Part 2 is coming up on the repair series for that machine. After that series is complete, then there will be a few cycle videos with that machine and finally, a conclusional video for that machine, which will be sort of a surprise concept for this channel.

The only conclusion I’ve made about why the older direct drive transmissions not slipping into spin was they probably were built with better tolerances. The later direct drives were noisy and were prone to certain issues from the worn out tooling in Whirlpool’s factory, someone on AW mentioned that’s probably why they ended up switching to the VMW design which frankly isn’t all that good. Many of the drive trains and mechanisms they are putting into HE machines really was only meant for portable and compact machines, not full size machines. May explain why HE machines don’t last. Btw, I want to apologize for any negative comments about the direct drives I’ve made in various groups and forums. Just wish they did multiple spray rinses on the first spin to help with rinsing. Maybe it’s to do with I have more experience with the belt drives despite being in the same age demographic along with working on them, crazy as this sounds I don’t have any experience with the direct drives, though I’ve seen lots and lots of videos of them in operation here on KZbin. Good news is I *might* be able to successfully repair the timer on my Whirlpool and hopefully put it back into service sometime this summer. It’s going to be a tedious process, but I’ve figured out a way to repair the cam assembly.

Could be. The machinery used to build that stuff was still new back then. They switched designs because of greed/money, and the EPA, primarily. That may have been part and parcel to why they did it, but otherwise they did it because the government told. them to do it. The thing with the spray rinses is something I can agree with you on, I wish they would have made them all have spray rinses in both spins--no reason to not. But in any case, that can be easily done by modifying the cam in the timer responsible for said function. My 92 Kenmore has notches for that in a certain cam, and I know that because I've taken it apart and looked into it. Would just need to cut out another notch in that cam for when it goes into the first spin, and there's your spray rinse on both spins. What exactly is the problem with the timer on your Whirlpool? In any case, hope you have good luck fixing it!

@@lizboz only if whirlpool went independent like speed queen they won't have to follow this law , that's why speed queen is still making old school washer

@Makesdonsdonsoney Nope, Speed Queen is just as bad now. All have fallen short. There's now only one model they make that's still somewhat old-school, which is the TC series. Everything else is screwed.

@@lizboz basically the cam assembly separated in half, tried putting it back together but wasn’t working on the gentle or wash n wear cycle. Basically had to gently hacksaw in the area it broke, now I am going to gently sand the areas down so there’s a flat surface. Going to use some old flat Lego pieces I found in a junk drawer since they are the same width and slid in between the good cams on the assembly. Going to JB-Weld the Lego pieces on the area that’s been sanded down, then JB-Weld the other part of the cam assembly back on. Also used some whiteout for reference points. May sound like a hack job repair, but will make sense when I post about it on AW sometime this summer or make a video of the repair process (more than likely will just be a post on AW).
