After 6 years at my apartment I put a fresh coat of paint on my walls and doors. Oh and new hinges on the doors to replace the old rusty ones. But my 90 year old landlady is awesome. She did reimburse me for other upgrades I did.

Carla, it’s really easy to repaint, especially if you use a water based Matt eggshell for the woodwork and it dries really quickly. Then paint the walls a fresh coat of emulsion, one room at a time wouldn’t be too bad and cheaper probably than a deep clean. If the walls and wood work are white, it’s even easier, no careful cutting in. It’s amazing mentally how different a place feels once painted and the chips, rubs and marks have gone. Treat yourself to a new bathroom cabinet, or a nice pre loved one. You deserve it!

My apartment also frustrates me because when it was last painted they got paint on everything and also painted over dirt and hairs -/so the bathrooms never look super clean. Some days I just remind myself, "my rent is cheap, my rent is cheap" 😂

Tip: you want a better flush. Take top off the tank off. There is a small turn knob. Turn it clock wise. It will give you more water power. Also cleaning cabinets and floor that are wood. Use Bona, it really has no smell. They have a cleaner and a shining spray. I use it on my 80 year wood floors and cabinets. It took stains and made my floors beautiful. So easy! Have a great day! Warm water with vinegar is excellent to clean wood, both floors and furniture, just make sure not to soak the surfaces.

You would be amazed at what a fresh coat of paint can do if I were you I'd definitely invest in having the place repainted maybe you can make a deal with the landlord to take something off the rent if you have the place done also if the toilets not flushing the landlord needs to have that fixed 😊

I have a friend who moves every few years (husband is in military) and she regularly succeeds in negotiating with landlords to do improvements in exchange for rent reduction. She has refaced cabinets and removed half walls. Updated bathrooms and even replaced appliances. If you habe a lawyer friend or just a friend who is good at arguing talk to your landlord with you. 50% rent reduction for x months in exchange for the same amount reinvested in improvememts sounds like a great deal all around

Ugh I felt this one, thanks for showing us we can clean our space even while hating every minute of it! I dry big things like sheets on a trouser hanger with clips and hang it over the door frame. Dry in no time. Last night on a whim I took everything out of my wall of cabinets in the living room and went to bed with only about a third of it sorted out. I am INTENSELY annoyed with it all but have to finish today. If anyone needs stupidly big or small envelopes, 10 types of glue, or dusty old taper candles let me know...

Oh girl, every word could have been me…there are just Some Days, aren’t there? Chronic fatigue and pain from hormonal issues and an ADHD brain is real. On the worst days, I make a bargain with myself: even if I’m sitting a lot, each time I get up for a meal or bathroom break, I do ONE thing. No matter how small, it’s at least One Thing. It might be putting one thing in a cupboard or carrying one item from one room to another, but it’s something, and it’s gonna happen at least five or six times during the course of the day. That’s better than nothing. Wishing you energy! 😊

It looks dirty to you because that little sponge is just schmearing everything around. White sponge in one hand, wet microfiber (car washing cloths) cloth in the other hand. Use hot water and Dawn dishwashing liquid. No need for the Mr Clean sponge unless you have some kind of stain. The inside of the medicine cabinet can be repainted with White Enamel Spray paint. It will take you longer to empty it, clean it with vinegar and hot water. Rinse with plain hot water. Let dry , then spray it. It will look brand new! Nothing you can buy online or in person will last as long as your vintage one. Everything being manufactured today is CRAP and lasts just about as long! You got this Carla. You are creative and very capable! ❤

When I don't feel like cleaning I play a game with myself. I have cut out pieces of paper and I wrote each room on the papers. I'll get them and scramble them and draw one and go clean that one room until it's all done. If I have something that belongs in another room I'll just put it in and leave it until I draw the paper that has that room on it. It might sound chilly but I've been doing it for almost 50 years now if you can believe that. 😅 If I don't get all the rooms done I'll try it again next time. I'll turn on the music and off I go. Oh boy, do I relate! My home just got out of control a bit over 2 weeks ago, my to do lists both personal and job related just kept on growing, whatever time I spent tidying up felt like wasted, as things were getting worse by the minute, and my energy level was non-existent. I’d try putting my paint request in a formal letter to the landlord (if you haven’t already). That’s so wrong that the owner hasn’t repainted in twelve years. I know this may sound like nagging, but if you would do a 10-minute pickup every single day, you wouldn’t have to devote so much time to doing it on cleaning days. If things are already mostly picked up, you can get right to the actual cleaning. Plus, your apartment will look tidy almost all the time when things are picked up and put away on a daily basis. Also, do the dishes every single day. Non-negotiable. You’re such a kind and good hearted woman! I enjoy your videos!

I do dishes and 5-30min pickups every day, it still gets like this, it's not enough for everyone. She talks about this at 21:50 I'm a Bee in the clutterbug system and everything I use on a daily, weekly or monthly basis ends up being left out unless the storage is very open and visual, even a 35 piece everyday clothing wardrobe can turn in to several piles, and 10 minutes daily isn't near enough to tidy when you're like this with everything, not just clothing. If it was that easy of course it's preferable to taking half or a whole day just to tidy before being able to even start cleaning. I think you don't have the full picture, but I can tell that you have good intentions and want to help so I hope that this helps you understand in turn

One thing that has *helped* me keep ahead of things: Make *the bed **_first thing_** in the morning when I get up.* Eat a meal, *then do the dishes **_for sure_** before leaving the kitchen.* *Never leave dirty dishes in the sink before going to bed!* Take something out to use it, then, after I am finished, *put it away immediately!* Do the laundry twice a week, *then put the clean, dry clothes away immediately* You deserve a _deep clean_ on your walls and that bathroom light, etc. but done by some service folks, not you! *And a new paint job!* Would your landlord do that for you??

I wash my walls with a flathead microfiber mop. I dry dust first with a telescoping long reach duster. Bissell with adjustable head, washable duster. Does good job on my ceiling fans. On overwhelm days - I do 3s. My next 3 steps. Get dressed, make bed, start laundry load.

I don’t know about a professional deep cleaning but I hired 2 Latin ladies for the holidays and they went HAM cleaning. Your landlord should be the one doing it, but painting is also something you could totally do yourself. It will feel so much newer! I would also recommend getting your windows cleaned. It seems unimportant but once they are fully clean inside and outside, you will get soo much more light inside! Otherwise it seems you're doing a great job cleaning yourself :)

I have a similar square footage 1-bedroom like you and I really like the Simply Clean method. Instead of cleaning my whole apartment at once (and postponing that), I have a weekly repeating 10-15 minute per day routine. Sunday is rest day and Friday catch-all (or some deep cleaning, or more resting :-). Love your videos and the home tour. Off days will pop up, just be kind to yourself. I’m convinced that we are sisters from another mother! All that you said could have been me speaking, down to the older apartment issues, 9 foot ceilings, built in the 1840’s. Was originally a single family home and later converted to 4 apartments with lots of “quirk”! Today is laundromat day, grocery shopping, bank and post office day. If there’s any energy left I’ll look at my little backyard garden…but considering the heat and humidity… not very likely. Dealing with old and new pain as well, trying to pace things out. Oh Carla😢, I feel your frustration. Except I don’t live in an apartment, I live in an actual old farmhouse…you know the kind everyone was replicating that’s all the rage. Well, let me tell you living in an actual one is not all that great. It’s cold in winter, hot in summer, the walls are crumbling, we are constantly fighting mice for residency, and it smells like a museum no matter how much I clean. We are reluctant to do any major repairs fearing that the ceiling will collapse and sometimes I just want to bulldoze it down, but then the next day I love all of the quirkiness and uniqueness. Just breathe and eat something yummy and nutritious, get some rest and know that you are helping so many of us feel content with our homes. There is so much pressure to have everything perfect and magazine ready, but all we really need to do is love what we have. Thank you for all of your hard work!

Carla, no one likes cleaning toilets. 🤣 A suggestion for air drying the bowl brush - put it between the bowl and the bowl seat and leave the lid up. It holds the handle steady and the brush will dry faster and won't be sitting in water in its holder.

Keep the green bowl you made!! It's cute. Remember that mug you chose to declutter in the beginning? Use that as your new toothbrush holder instead! I use a cute mug with a handpainted fish on it that I got in London as my toothbrush holder and it makes me happy annnd it's easy to clean.

Great video, very inspiring. Cleaning alone is so hard. I lived in an apt in Brooklyn for 15 years nobody ever offered to paint it lol, so that sounds normal to me. I recommend highly paying someone to paint your apt, keep it simple, do white. It will really improve the space. Painting yourself is horrible back breaking work and most of us don't know what we are doing. Your place is so cute, and after cleaning it , it looks even cuter.

Your floater in the back of the toilet needs to be replaced..The toilet is running too long after that 2nd flush. The landlord is required to fix that. Maybe you can get a whole new efficient toilet with the dual flushing system. It saves on water as well. It would benefit the landlord as well if they pay for the water bill there. Cif cream or Mr. Clean will work on the walls. You could have a paint party & each friend do a wall. A whole wine/cheese paint party 😊

It was fun to work alongside you this morning. Re: pottery. It's all right to toss what doesn't turn out. I've tossed two (so far) and one broke. My pottery teacher made 100 pieces as part of her education. When she was finished, her teacher instructed her to smash them. It was a lesson in detachment and imperfection (or something). Happily, my teacher didn't make me do that.

I am a renter too, for my ceilings I used a swifter dry sweeper pet pads ( they grab more dirt) to get my high walls and ceiling, even though it is a broom for floors the flat surface works great on my ceilings and walls... I am very short, and I use the swifter fluffy duster to get all the nooks and crannies that just seem to never stay dust-free. I def do the rage declutter... just start tossing stuff... I feel better after, but dang I end up having to replace things... lol

Hi Carla, To get in the zone of cleaning my busy home I get in my head “a person” that’s visiting my home and that could be anytime soon!! now I have different people coming so this is the level of cleaning I do 😂 it might be a friend that I feel really comfortable with so that’s a quick one, or the neat freak friend, my mother and then there’s the queen ( sadly not now I live in the Uk) You just have to make it more fun somehow. I find this spurs me on, another thing I was once told you should always be 15minutes away from having a visitor that’s not so easy for me but does make me straighten up my home before bedtime and leaving for work in a morning. I’m just coming out of a spell of depression in my life and come off antidepressants that I have now realised had kept me in a dull place I feel like I’ve got new batteries 😅 I’m whizzing around and my new idea is not to procrastinate but get it done and I’ve noticed that by doing that I’m getting all this dopamine hits that make me feel good and all my wee jobs about my home and garden are getting done. 27:35 This is so relatable. My apartment is like this too, dinged up, dark on the walls from accumulated dust that doesn't wipe off with a rag. It needs a new coat of paint. However, being that there is a housing crisis I am so grateful to not be paying more. It's great to be able to set aside more savings.

Love this side of you. Real and truthful. I get to the point, sometimes, that I feel so overwhelmed with myself and the anxiety kicks in, and I ignore it. Then that day comes when that boost comes and I start to tackle one room at a time. I say to my self, SELF, just start by picking up....

I can sooooo relate to the old apartment grunginess (is that a word?) I recently did a bathroom declutter and when the thought of 50+ years of other renters’ dirt and grime in all the crevices hit me, I about had a mental breakdown. At least your place has a special charm to it, but i agree it needs a paint/restore/refresh. I also know what it’s like dealing with landlords who don’t want to do any upkeep or renovations. I bet a deep clean will go a long way both for your space and mental health. I’ve been considering getting one too. Hang in there! Love your videos!

The candle residue will come off with a Dawn dish liquid and lemon juice mixture. Spray it on and then tie a cloth on your mop to scrub it off. Then launder the cloth or toss it out.❤

Command hooks inside the medicine cabinet door. Store hair ties, head bands, eye lash curler…so much!
