I would say one of the biggest things for new investors is to never invest in a company or entity you don't understand. If you don't understand it, know how the company makes its money, or how the basics about the company's finances, wait to invest until you do! There is so much great and free education out there and it is better to gain that education before investing.

I was in Houston, TX the day Enron shuttered its doors. People were devasted, wandering around downtown with the personal content of their desk in boxes. I personally know people who lost their entire retirement and those that were not allowed to sell their stock options. My issue is that I investigate what I have interest in. What I am finding is everything has good things and bad things. Makes it hard to decide. The dividend percentages to me are important but most of the ones with higher percentages are not good long term. I been looking at few you suggested as well as some I had in mind. I don’t play around, I try to be safe. Consider the P.E ratio as well as their 5 year performance.
