The fact that Indonesia is one of the largest flour exporting countries in the world today makes the sequence of events in the series closer to reality. Since Joel and his daughter did not eat any meals containing flour in the first episode (cakes... pancakes... cookies) and also that Joel was on a diet, it indicates that they were less likely to be infected with the fungus than the rest of the people of the area or city in Texas. During the game this sequence of events is not made clear, so I find it a great idea to include it in the series.

No, Indonesia is not even close to a large flour exporter. They import all their wheat and mill it for domestic purposes. They do have the largest mill in the world, yes, but there's very little export. Generally, Indonesian flour does not end up on American store shelves. As an ingredient in imported Southeast Asian food items? Sure, that's very possible. But I don't see how Indonesian flour would be used in the average Texan's biscuits, cookies, or pancakes. And it would be an ever slimmer chance of Indonesian flour causing a sudden country-wide outbreak in the US, just two days after that scene in Jakarta. I mean, the show is clearly implying that it spread that way, but it's very far from reality.

This show has been good so far for the most part and I've played the game many times. I'm not going to let these gamer nerds ruin this show for me with their pathetic bickering, insults, and displeasure. Some even upset cause Sarah is black and not blonde. In the end, I think most of the casual watchers will fall in love with this series eventually and that is all that matters for it to be renewed for a sophomore season.

I'm pretty sure the reason Tess didn't pull away or anything, as you implied, was that the infection was already taken over. The first episode has a poster that says if you're bitten in the neck/head area you only have like 30 minutes before you're done so she was very likely close to being fully taken over anyways. I think the "Kiss" was just the fungus finishing the job. You can see Tess is already flicking the lighter slower and slower up until it finally ignites and she's able to let it go.

I agree, I think she was already losing control of herself. I think the poster times in the first ep was even worse than that: Head or neck = 5 -15 minutes, I seem to recall. It did look like it was an effort to keep trying to click the lighter. Her eyes were showing her terror, even though she was involuntarily frozen.

This was so good! I loved how they included the hotel stuff, which makes me even more curious what they're gonna do in the Kansas City episode (the show's substitute for Pittsburgh). Tess's scene was so dramatic and from the game. Legitimately wept a little. Great stuff.

Tess was losing control of herself, in the end the infected can control their limbs and eyes, that's why she had problem lightning up the lighter. She was frozen, because she was being controlled.

As for the kiss, the only thing the cordyceps care about is finding the quickest way to infect the brain & brain stem. The mouth is one the easiest vulnerability points. I believe in the first episode the old neighbor that we first see infected is using the ear of her daughter as a weak point to infect her. It’s kinda hard to tell but it was somewhere on the head.

The radio broadcast at the beginning (during breakfast) is talking about an outbreak in Jakarta, which Sara points out is in Indonesia. Jakarta also happens to be the home of the largest flour mill in the world. In the first 20 minutes of the episode, we see Joel and Sara avoid infection FOUR times. They have no flour for pancakes. They turn down the neighbors biscuits. Sara leaves before the cookies are finished when visiting the neighbors. And Joel forgets to buy a cake. FOUR times the characters were spared consuming foods containing a product likely manufactured in Jakarta that could have very likely contributed to the global outbreak. - Credits

For cinematic purposes i like the change of removing spores and adding the tentacles in the mouth. I understand that they dont wanna have a bunch of scenes where the actor have to wear gas masks, so adding a new element to the infection that replaces spores was a good idea. It gives a new creepy vibe to the infection.

After the credits for this episode they even said it wouldnt make sense to do spores. For a game its ok but a show, its hard to explain why an airborn infection not being everywhere in the air and only in certain areas when everything is overgrown haha

Fun Fact: The opening scene in Indonesia takes place on September 24th, 2003 two days before the premiere episode's events. In that first episode a short radio segment mentions "disturbances" in Jakarta. Much like the opening scene of the first episode. This episode also opens with more background of the Cordyceps virus. Showing its initial outbreak in Indonesia. Also, I'm so glad non-gamers get to experience this amazing story.

You played the game and here also heard the introduction in the pilot, then you must know that dead bodies do not come back. The fungus takes possession of living people and keeps them alive. If the bodies are dead, the fungus lives on and waits for a new body or dries up. Runners even have a consciousness, they are aware of their actions. In the game, they even cry.

I am not sure why any would complain about Anna Torev as Tess. I thought she embodied the essence of the character. Though, in the first episode when she was getting arrested by FDRA and that last scream "I am not a firefly" I thought she sounded like Zack De la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine lol.

When I heard that the same people who worked on Chernobyl were going to work on TLOU the scene when the plant workers had to drain the tanks at the bottom floor of the plant immediately came to mind. I thought if they can make this scene incredibly nerve racking imagine what they could do with the clickers. Even though I played the game and knew how it would go I was somehow even MORE terrified than when I played the game! As for Tess’ ending, I think it was actually done better than the game. The scene of the mycelium (the fungal threads) going into her mouth was incredibly disgusting but the look in her eye when it happened showed that even though she was about to turn into one of them she managed used that iron will of hers to force herself through those last seconds before turning to burn them all. To give context to what Prof. Ratna is speaking about her solution to stop the contamination. During that time Java, the island that Jakarta is in is already overpopulated. Jakarta City probably have more than 8 Million inhabitants. Jakarta State more than 12-15 Million. If its spread, its done. Her idea may sound terrifying but its the right idea because what happened was pretty much Doomsday.

The made some big changes for the show but they make a lot of sense to me. Getting rid of spores means you don't have your talented actors hiding behind gas masks. Also realistically spores can travel for miles and miles. There are fungal spores just about everywhere on Earth IRL, we are all probably breathing a few right now. If Cordeceps was an actual threat, everyone in the world would already be infected. So the replaced it with the underground network that can connect patches of the fungus to nearby Infected. Change the threat from one creepy spooky threat to another. That just plays for better television. A+ to the writers, directors, producers, set designers and actors... hell everyone involved. This is the best thing I have watched in ages.

So Ima try and make a comment every video explaining some stuff the series changed for those who don't know the games. This is in no way hating on anyone and love the series so far. I'll also add my thoughts. But it's been so long since I last saw the game, so I will miss things and some things might be inaccurate. So episode 2. The whole Jakarta stuff never happened because the infection was airborne with the spores. Here They capture the scenery and especially the buildings really well. The corridors looks exactly like something out of the 1st game. But for someone who knows that there are a lot of infected that have been around for 20 years, they sure don't seem to care that they make a lot of sound (like when Ellie rings the bell) considering hearing is how they see and the normal infected are mostly blind while the older ones are full blind. There are 5 stages (6 in part 2), but I'll only talk about 3. The Runners. They're the most recently infected, they're described with having intense speed, sluggish attacks and attack in hordes. 2nd stage are Stalkers. They've been infected from about a week to a year and obviously are more cautious and attack at better opportunities like jump scares. Then there's the 3rd stage, the Clickers. They usually take a year to become a Clicker. Like I mentioned before, they're blind and rely on hearing to guide them. They use echolocation, that's why they make that clicking sound constantly. They're also incredibly strong. They always kill Joel when grappled and you don't have a shiv. Some of these might change in the story, or it might not. Clickers are also pretty tough to kill and very strong. The Calluses that form on its head protect it. A shot from a revolver would send chunks flying, but the brain would still be intact. It takes like 2 shots in the head with a revolver and I think 1 shot with a shotgun close range. They did really well with the Clicker movement and sound! I wonder who played the Clickers or was it CGI? The death of Tess is fairly accurate. The conversation among other things. The only difference is Tess in the games told Joel to go where Tommy is. Joel never really talked to him after a difference in views, but Joel knew some of his whereabouts or Tess did. Frank and Bill were introduced later, in the next scene after traversing a subway infected with spores where Joel says he's going there cause he was a mechanic and owed him a favor. I wonder what they're gonna do for the spores portion of the series since spores aren't a thing here. Also, Fedra did kill those Fireflies, not a scuffle between themselves and they were separated by Fedra arriving. Tess buys Joel some time by fighting back. She also mentions not wanting to turn into "one of those things" she manages to kill 2 of the big group. I believe you can fight them or leave. Doesn't matter in the end for that one. Although I must say, great acting, but Ellie is a lot more likeable in the game than here. In the game, she has more compassion unlike here where she's mostly snark, but that's fine. The series has a lot of time to build her personality up. Same with Joel. There's still some disconnect a little and I'd like that to be repaired.

Always gotta say it. The fact that they went with Joel unloading when he can and not having time to aim for the head because theres a friggin clicker running at him makes the infected real dangerous. Unlike other shows/movies, these ppl are human and real, not aim bot superhumans who can get headshots fast and under pressure

I believe the intention of the scene is to show that the Cordyceps is already taking hold of her. This would be why the infected ignore her as they run past, the fungus already knows she's infected. As for the "kiss", it wasn't a kiss, the mycelium in the mouth is what infects people when they're bitten, seen in the first episode with granny. I think Tess was starting to lose motor control and the Cordyceps used that opportunity to speed up her infection by simply injecting mycelium straight into her rather than waiting for it to grow into her brain, which may have taken mere minutes anyway. Simply the fungus exerting it's own will to live by confirming her turn and ensuring it's spread.
