it's funny that people think it was an acting choice by Bella to make her voice sound lower and tough when she confronts Daid and James. Bella gives a very different reason. This section of the show was filmed in Alberta, Canada in February. The day they filmed these hunting scenes it was seventeen below zero and she said her larynx was freezing up causing her to be unable to speak her lines clearly. Additionally, to add to the difficulty of doing the scene she was given a real hunting rifle that was almost bigger than her and weighed a ton, instead of the foam prop gun. They wanted to highlight the problem that real life Ellie would have in keeping the gun trained on David and James. Craig said Bella was feeling the effects of holding the gun for take after take on the next day in her biceps and pecs.

During the final Ellie scene with David, I feel like I like this version more. In the game, Joel had to stop Ellie-Ellie was on the verge of losing herself to her anger. In this TV version, she stopped on her own, the trance was broken and she kind of wandered around probably realizing what she's done and how right now, she's alone. That must've bought out so much fear in her. When Joel came to get her, she was scared, exhausted, and just so ready to fight again. It was so moving to see how seeing Joel's face calmed her down. I think made it more impactful for me.

No it wasn't an issue of money that they didn't film Ellie and David fighting off the infected because most of that is gameplay. I heard they spent like $10 million per episode on this show so you know money was not an issue. It was just to get the story going because they could not put every fighting scene into the TV show the show would be 20 episodes long. And then the infected will not really have that big impact If you know they would be all over the place in every scene.

Jumping in at 11:39, but....who remembers the 1972 Uruguayan football team plane crash in the Andes? After the survivors of that were rescued and details of their ordeal were revealed, the Catholic Church actually came out in support of them, citing their extreme conditions and that it was desperation rather than desire that forced them to it. Not saying that to say that David is right in any way, but when the only other choice is to starve, I can see how using the bodies of those already passed might start to look less bad.

Perhaps my favourite episode so far of the series as it really cranked up the tension and the psychological battle between Ellie and David was great even if it felt a bit rushed. The baby girl moment however was a real gut punch for me as Pedro nailed the delivery and Bella is just phenomenal throughout this episode. Really enjoying your reactions so far Alyska for the show and look forward to the final.

Absolutley amazing performance of Bella my only complain is not having Joel stop Ellie inside the restaurant, cause we know that Ellie wouldn't have stopped. And the way Ashley delivers "He tried to .... Joel " and her voice breaks, there's just no way to top that.

The door is locked, Joel is still super weak and Ellie would've very likely cleaved him. I think this is definitely the better choice.

The left you to wonder until the reveal. Before David and James went hunting, there was conversation about how much they had left of elk, venison, rabbit, etc. So, yes, it _could_ be venison. I don't think Joel "dragged him up the stairs." It would be pretty noisy and risky. In the basement, he killed the guy. Imagine if his buddy shows up while you, seriously wounded, are dragging his buddy's body up stairs. I'm pretty sure he ambushed and rendered unconscious the other guy outside and used him to bait the third. Then bound them for questioning. To really _really_ creep you out. Remember, before the end of civilization, David was a teacher. He taught girls about Ellie's age.

I know it's hard not to compare but the additional backstory with David and the conversation with Ellie serves the same purpose as the infected fight imo. It would also be pretty hard to plausibly write a scene where just the two of them survive a random hoard of infected in the middle of nowhere.

This episode was hard to watch but the actor that played David did a phenomenal job justice to the game character perfectly ! Bella Ramsey did an awesome job in this episode too very believable especially all that rage here she released on David at the end 🥺 Joel came in and clutch at the end to comfort her realized what she's been through especially the all-time favorite line from the game I got you baby girl ☺️

Having the horde of infected randomly makes 0 sense in this medium, that's not a video game. The infected are very sparse where they are. If you think about it, thats why Joel finds Ellie outside here, as in the game he magically appears in the locked in building.

"the fighting is the part I like the most" BARF... when Joel called Ellie "baby girl", I cried like a baby girl. I totally agree about having the clicker scene with David & Ellie. If you followed up the penicillin scene with that, most people would be pro David (especially if he kills a clicker to save Ellie) before the entire audience is ultimately horrified because they were rooting for him lol. It would have definitely added some shock of him being the pedo cannibal preacher teacher. & we have had so little clickers this season, it would have been cool to get that with David & Ellie.

I saw an interview with Bella Ramsey about this episode. Apparently, this was shot in February, at -17 Celsius, the coldest day of shooting. And she had to carry the real rifle, as the rubber one didn't look right in the cold.

As someone who hasn't played the game, as relieved as I was that Ellie had gained the upper hand and killed David, I was also absolutely devastated for her in that moment. Any innocence she still had was destroyed by what David did and attempted to do to her and by the fact that he forced her to hack him to death to avoid it. That guy was a monster. Joel's a weapon. The way he took out the men left behind to search for him, despite being wounded and nowhere near fully fit, was epic and that interrogation scene.... well, let's just say he wasn't messing around. I totally expected that Joel would burst in at the last minute to save Ellie, but I'm so glad they actually had Ellie save herself. She went beast mode. She's a true survivor. She is Joel's daughter. Can't fault this episode. Can't wait for the finale. P.S. If someone feels the need to tell you how good they are, chances are they haven't shown you how good they are and as such, probably aren't good at all.

I was wondering how dark they were gonna make the *DARKEST* part of the game. And yeah, they did not hold back. They made David in his last minutes even more disturbing than the game made him. And when David tells Ellie that she has a violent heart he had NOOOO idea. I would honestly put her near the top of the list of the deadliest people in tv or video games. But that scene of Joel hugging Ellie and calling her baby girl still hits hard. Also I kinda wished that Troy Baker was cast as someone far more important than James. Still he was amazing and he had an awesome death scene, and it was darkly funny that video game Joel was killed by tv Ellie. Also wish that they gave Ellie her trademark bow and arrow, but hopefully we get that in Part 2.

At around 16:06 you can see the reaction of Ellie stabbing from the mic idk why but find that as a pretty neat touch from you lol But damn!!! What an episode I can definitely see why people be mad it was rushed but as a video game adaptation I can understand rushing scenes like the Ellie chased scene before getting captured or the fight against David but I really enjoyed this episode

tbf it happened much quicker because it didnt have those long gameplay segments in between the cutscenes. And i think if we didnt have the game as a frame of reference the pacing might not be that noticeable..i think? im wondering what they could have filled it in more with. there def had to have been a few scenes that didnt make it past editing.

Yeah, I think this segment of the game was probably tricky to adapt for TV since so much of it was gameplay. I do wish they'd added another 10-15 minutes fleshing out David's "flock" though. Was surprised at how little they actually appeared in the episode. This was probably the weakest one so far imo, but the last few minutes were fantastic.

"When you are lost in the darkness, look for the light" Joel who lives in the (his) darkness has found the light in Ellie. At the same time, she loses hers through him and the world he shows her. Another low point for Ellie, a turning point, so to speak. Here the animal in Ellie came out with her overkill and the experience she had to make. Almost r*p*d and eaten. Here she experiences for the first time the worst abyss in man. I think if you've seen Ellie's past reactions to losses, there wasn't much anger involved. She swallowed Sam's death completely. Here in their outburst really everything came out, which was not seen before. There is no more a way back for her. She will not be the same. The episode is also important for the future. It shows what Ellie is capable of. A dark side in her that people like David recognize. I also think it's cool that the torture scene actually showed us explicitly how Joel has proceeded over the last 20 years. This was the first time it was really shown why everyone was afraid of Joel in episode 1. A nice Tess callback from Ellie in the conversation with David. "Your (our) luck had to run out sooner or later." were Tess's words shortly before she had shown him her bite. The father of the girl Joel killed will always be with her. I'm sure she enjoyed the meal. That's macabre. 😁 And here is Troy Baker (Game Joel) in a not so small role as David's henchman James. You can even hear Joel out of his voice from time to time. I also didn't think that one day I would have to see Ellie kill Joel. There will be another big timejump. At the beginning of the next episode they will already be in Salt Lake City. Also, we'll see Ashley Johnson, who was Ellie in the game.

@SuperRonJon he actually was in episode 2. If it wasn't him it was someone who looked very much like him. He played a dead firefly in the courthouse scene. He was only on camera for about 1 or 2 seconds but he did make an appearance. And he did direct the episode as you said.

I do wish for a few things, The gun play in this show is still not very good. In the first two episodes, everybody's dust cover was up instead of down. Also I wish they'd put more infected in the show, like we've seen how many? Four? Up close I mean. But overall this episode was phenomenal, a definite second in the best episodes for me, I just love the character arc and the writing of ep 7, but this is so damn good. I can't wait to see Ashley Johnson's character, it's probably going to add a looooot of backstory. Also I absolutely love the final scene where, not only does Joel finally embrace Ellie as his daughter figure, but at the same time he calls her "Baby girl", they close up on the watch, which again shows his connections to his past. I'm really excited for this last episode and I hear that there's some small changes that may make a large change for some people, doesn't change much for me though.
