I gotta watch this at least once a day, this and the granny song. I love watching this guy, and everything he does, be it, acting, stand up.....etc. A real renaissance man.

Whatched this over and again while mourning my mother who was raised about 10 miles down river near New river gorge. Connolly shows the roots of mountain music and how it fits hand in hand with the old country.seamlessly.thanks billy.

Billy originally started his entertainment career as a folk musician playing in the pubs of Glasgow telling a few jokes between sets. But the the jokes started getting longer than the sets he was playing!

I remember my father telling me this fact about the big yin, when I was a kid (give or take 10 yr old). I remember one weekend morning, he put on an old tape of “big banana feet” from that moment, I realised as a working class kid from a council estate in south London, we have something worth far more than money, something that carried me across the world…British humour.

He played around Scotland as a folk singer, not just Glasgow. Then around the country as part of the Humblebums.

mattte, obviously drawn so much inspiration from this man over the years as a 26 year old Scottish man, but I've been grinding hard on the clawhammer banjo and now I get to appreciate and discover Billy all over again

The Humblebums- Billy, and Tam Harvey released one album "First Collection of Merry Melodies" in Feb 69 Billy and Tam parted company,then Gerry Rafferty joined Billy and released another two albums "The New Humblebums" Sept 69, followed by "Open Up The Door" June 70. Gerry Rafferty formed his own group "Stealers Wheel" in '72 which was responsible for the hits "Baker Street" and "Stuck in the Middle with You"

Billy can hold a tune too!! Not the best voice in the world, but certainly suits this kind of music... I think it's awesome!! I'd be absolutely chuffed if i could play my guitar half as well as he plays the banjo... And this isn't even his bread winning talent!! Hats off to you Mr Connolly!!!
@StewartNicolasBILLYCONNOLLY14 жыл бұрын
If you describe BILLY as a comedian he immediately changes into a musician - if you say he's a musician - he changes into an actor - if you say OK so he's an actor - he changes back into what he really is....a human being like the rest of us - but GREAT!
@doberman1ism8 жыл бұрын
Brilliant banjo playing. I wonder if Billy has ever strummed the banjo with the actor Steve Martin. The banjo was originally an African musical instrument carved out of a gourd with two strings. The stringed gourd made its way to America during the slave trades and was refined into the banjo by the mountain people of Appalacia.

One wee error....Baker Street was well after Stealers Wheel, Rafferty had a contractual dispute with his record company from 1973 to 1978 on a matter of principle, basically slavery & theft of artistic copyright. He refused to make any more recordings for them but was prohibited from recording for anyone else. Baker Street was in 1978 after the contract terminated.
