Try using chopsticks when you next feed your snakes. If they bite they'll go for the sticks instead of you, and chopsticks can be multiple feet long.

My Wife got a Barons Racer a year and a half ago. It likes to sit and judge us all the time. He doesn't enjoy being handled but his still young so maybe over time he will settle down. He his fun to feed and he likes moving to the highest point he can. I haven't been bitten yet just pooped on. I concur with Clint's rating of this unique snake.

This snake is so beautiful! While no snake will ever be the right pet for me, I absolutely love seeing and learning about the incredible variety of beings you showcase here on your channel. I love your focus on the real costs and requirements to care for each animal and their unique needs and even the fact that you often include a "better choice" if an animal is particularly difficult or dangerous to keep.
@CrimFerret Жыл бұрын
I'd never heard of this snake species before. It's gorgeous. I really like arboreal or semi-arboreal snakes. They are often visible in their enclosure and just seem a lot more interesting overall. I think the taller enclosures look better and it kind of encourages one to put more effort into it. Having a little leeway in environment is nice. Obviously I'd do everything I could to make it the best it could be and probably have logging and monitoring of conditions running because I'm also a tech geek. The laws here are a little fuzzy on rear fanged snakes. There's a fee you have to pay. In theory they fall under the category of venomous but the powers that be at the Dept. of Wildlife leave you alone if that's what you're keeping because they know there's no actual danger. This wouldn't even have the issue of being a native species like the western hognose.
@Kvs-vf9nt Жыл бұрын
Or you just keep one. Who's gonne come and check if you have one? And if you need a vet they don't ask if you have a permit. I mean damn everyone can have any dog they want while they bite children to death! But a permit for a barons racer is just ridiculous. I don't think here in Belgium we need a permit for it. I wouldn't care either way. Nobody comes checking if I have a kingsnake that I registered yes. But here they don't really care. As long as it's well taken care for and not deathly it's good.

I had no idea they have such a long tail. I jawdropped when you said that. Why tho? Why such a long tail, unlike other snakes?
@calebgardner2687 Жыл бұрын
There's generally a trend with arboreal (climbing) snakes and long tails. The tails can help them hold on to branches and stuff, so it's pretty beneficial.

I wish there were more green snakes in the hobby. When I got into reptiles I was a little surprised so few in the hobby are green despite that being the color most associated with them (in my region anyway). When I do see them, many kinds seem to always be WC. Always makes me wonder if they can't be captive bred or if no one thinks it's worth it.

If and when I have the funds to get snakes, I'm going to need vertical space; it's always the arboreal and semi-arboreal species that make me go "this is beautiful! I need one!". Hey Clint, I watch your videos religiously, even though I’m not purchasing a reptile any time soon. You keep things really pleasant and informative and positive and lighthearted. So I would not blame you for not covering the recent holy Thursday massacre. I’m sure you have heard about it. I saw the entire footage and it made me cry. But you are someone with a real platform and the ability to help reptile breeders avoid this kind of massacre. And your platform goes well beyond those who own reptiles, I love your content, and so do my nieces and nephews and all of their friends. You appeals to a very broad audience, so I would not imagine you covering this when speaking to children. But I still would love your opinion on this may be on your Patreon or something. It was beyond horrific and brutal. What those men did to those snakes, using a tool that should only be used in emergency situations in the wild. The pregnant boa was still moving which means she was still in pain and these officers put her dying body in a corner to avoid telling the owner, sentencing all of her little babies to death. It’s one of the most horrific things I have ever seen, and I will never rewatch it.

I've bred these several times, they are a great snake to keep. I have always found males to be more delicate than females for some reason. They are also bred as yellow, brown and blue morphs. Hatchlings are very easy to start feeding, mine always took defrost oink mice as soon as they shed. A bog female will easily manage day old chicks and rat weaners. They are NOT racers, it is just one of their many commone names. Argentine/ Barons Longnose snake is probably the more accurate name. In the UK, one of the related species, Philodryas olfersii, requires a licence to be kept as this species has caused at least one human fatality.

So Clint, I wanted to give you "prop comments" in regard to your Mangrove snake video - your best in terms of information for stating it right to date - however, here's the tricky of slippery slopes in regard to this wonderful yet venomous species my friend. The Barron's Green Racer, drop for drop, is the most venomous hobby colubrid in the pet trade and colubrid species outside of the Boomslang, Twig, Red Necked Keelback and Peruvian Slender snake. Its sister species The Litchenstein's Green Racer or Cobra Verde is slightly more venomous overall, but the Barron's Green Racer on toxicology record has presynaptic neurotoxic venom components and 3-finger-toxin structure more debilitating than all other mildly venomous colubrids combined, and more toxic than the Mangrove snake. Its venom also includes myotoxins and oedema forming activity. The Mangrove and Barron's Racer are only considered less lethal in terms of risk keeping due to the smallest maxillary rear fang structure of the Mangrove and the much larger but elongated mouth of the Barron's Green Racer which makes it more difficult to inflict a serious bite envenomation - even though there such pussy cats. Side Note Extension For The Record: I'd suggest to do some more research about the venom considering your intellect and resources, and will be amazed to find the initial theory about its venom structure is not hemorrhagic or necrotic in terms of traditional hemotoxic makeup. It's also misidentified as a "racer snake" which has always driven me crazy. I would also suggest your doctor friend to also do a little more research on their venom and the actual bites that occurred just to finalize truth for the record buddy. Otherwise, great job with your videos.
