My personal view after this final scene would have been something like this. We know Max took the V8 Interceptor without authorisation. In the immediate months after this any searching for Max soon ended when the MFP & other law enforcement agencies simply fell apart, overwhelmed by the growing number of various gangs of various descriptions. Once one gang had been eliminated (the Toecutters in this case), many more would form. Many gangs would go on raids, notably the MFP HQs, steal the uniforms & cars, including Max's former "Dark One" patrol car, go on the rampage & start to cause anarchy & eventually all out war, soon destroying what limited normality of life that was left. Any MFP officers that were left would likely meet grizzly ends. Oil, still not in desperately short supply at this point would not too long become hard currency, where the gangs would get as much of it as they could by foul means. Max himself, realising how precious oil had become would have adapted the interceptor by fitting more fuel tanks to it lessening a constant hunt for the valuable juice. It would however lead to the drifter Max to fall foul to the gangs, by now marauders, after him as well for his precious cargo, which would be seen to view. That's how I would see it between this & the next instalment.

I also like the theory that many cops also went rogue and formed their own gangs, because at some point nobody cared what the politicians and judges had to say anymore, even before they made the incredibly bad decision to nuke all the cities (you know, just to piss all over an already crumbling ruin of a society). Namely, those dudes with MFP themed uniforms in Road Warrior were actually most likely just highway patrolmen at one point in their life, before they teamed up with their friends (i.e. Humungous whom is hinted at being either a cop himself in his former life or even a war veteran). There are subtle hints between this movie and the next one that seem to indicate this might have been a thing, like how the cops were enraged when a lawyer basically managed to get an actual murderer and rapist set free in just a matter of days (if not hours) in the first movie. It must have been frustrating as hell to watch that while your boys are getting tagged one after another, so I think many of those dudes took a hint off Max and went rogue in their own way. Sidebar note: there is a comic that seems to indicate the MFP cops did in fact start their own gangs, though it is debatable if that is considered canon by fans or not. We also have to remember that most of these movies take place in lower population areas where the only thing maintaining order is the WILLPOWER of good men willing to enforce the actual law, and if that goes away...well...you get what you see at the end of Mad Max and all throughout Road Warrior. Thunderdome is a worthy mention, but at the point we are talking about society trying to rebuild itself from the ashes. Only big difference between them and Max is that Max actually does not enjoy killing (or ever make it obvious, like the others that revel in "that scag and his floozy are going to die" type mentality). Max does what he has to do in the following movies and nothing more, though there are moments where you see even he is tested to the limits of his tolerance.

@@karlkrump6634yep, according to one of the comics, the MFP officers Roop and Charlie went on to become wasteland bandits. They attacked and killed all but one of another group of survivors before being killed by the gang of Colonel Joe Moore and Major Kalashnikov. Joe Moore would become Immortan Joe, Major Kalashnikov would become the Bullet Farmer, and the last survivor became the People Eater.

What happens after this scene. -the WWIII gets worse -gangs assault the MFP HQ - Few of the MFP Officers survive (Roop, Charlie and Sarse) - Max finds the dog from victims of another gang attack (in Mad Max: Renegade) - The cities become a mess with the riots - Everyone flees away from the cities - Main Force Patrol gets disbanded after that comes the events of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior then like week after The Road Warrior ends, the leaders of the countries start to use Tactical Nukes, this is when Cpt. Walker tries to escape crashes down, then Max repairs his interceptor from Pappagallos Lone Wolf (Events of the comic books) and then comes the events of Beyond Thunderdome (Max is delivering the car parts to his camp with the truck at the beginning of the movie) and then Glory and her mother dies, beginning of Fury Road.

I like how he tried falling back on him being mentally ill as a way to get out of trouble like what happened in court. It just feels satisfying that Max just doesn’t give a damn and ends him like that. After all, lots of people are mentally ill, but that doesn’t mean that they’ll all resort to rash, harmful actions like Johnny did. He may have been sick, but it’s clear he didn’t have any morals.
