Got this game for free on the Epic store a while ago and honestly, it was quite enjoyable. It is true that the story and art style are heavily inspired by Bioshock, but I wouldn't call it a rip-off as the game play itself is more similar to games like Amnesia and Layers of Fear than it is to Bioshock. Also, it is pretty clear that quite a lot of effort went into the game, especially in regards to art assets and environments.

It’s funny because the idea behind To Close to the Sun could’ve worked. Scientists have a reputation for trying to answer questions that are inherently dangerous for the sake of knowledge for knowledge’s sake and the game could’ve made the point that the ambition to seek knowledge needs to be tempered or you risk something catastrophic. But you do that by showing neglect, hastiness, scientists protesting “safety concerns” and bullying their way into numerous disastrous experiments after another. Not through one lab accident that summons the monsters

@emmapopovic-bogdanich1991
@emmapopovic-bogdanich1991 5 жыл бұрын
@@blackheartzerotheundergrou3225 I think that it's more due to it being set almost a century before Die Hard was made. It would be one thing if it were set in modern times (give or take a few decades), but considering how alien the world and plot of Die Hard is to the late 1800s is pretty amazing. Something that I only realized on the third viewing of this review is how Tesla, a cultured but eccentric Serbian immigrant, was able to get an entire city full of people in an underwater city considering that if he had the business and people skills he did in real life, then he wouldn't have died poor. At the very least, he would have married the daughter of J.P. Morgan. She was in love with him, but he wanted to devote himself to science. If the guy couldn't even be that mildly sleazy, then how and why would he create a city where there were no laws. It doesn't fit in with his personality. It made sense in Bioshock because everyone was inspired by Ayn Randian philosophy, but it just doesn't seem like what Nikola Tesla would do.

Based on the title, I thought it was going to be a survival game set in space where you scramble to survive in a damaged space station as it drifts nearer and nearer to our dear celestial body. A sciency underwater settlement called "Helios"? I think Close to the Sun has been taking a few pointers from Soma's story, too. Soma itself does also seem to sneak a few peeks at Bioshock's test sheet, but it's still very much its own game. Bioshock and Soma are both great stories, but in different ways. One explores the socio-political flaws of Objectivism, and the other explores the metaphysical concept of "what it means to be human". I haven't played Close to the Sun, but it seems to be trying to take the best parts of both games and cram them together. Ice cream and pizza are both great foods, but no sane chef would serve them on the same plate... and it would seem that a lot of higher-ups in the games industry are not "sane chefs". On a less serious note, the end credits for ZP have changed and it's making me deeply, deeply uncomfortable.

Sometimes ripping-off the ideas more competent people wholesale is better that improving bad ideas. Because seeing an ambitious proyect fail misserably maybe isn't as fun as seeing it succed, but a lot of times is funnier that seeing a concept evolve from bad to mediocre. Is like Doug Walker once wrote "fame is fleeting. But infamy last forever" or something

If you like bioshock check out the Danish symphony orchestra performance of a piece from the game, it is fantastic. They do many interesting pieces Star Wars, Halo, World of Warcraft, the fifth element and many more. I hope to see them live at some point when work permits and this Corona fucks off.

Achtually Yahtz, Rapture's downfall was caused by avoiding one of the main tenets of libertarianism: free trade. I'd say the game shows the philosophy more in a good light than a bad one, Rapture seemed to work well for a long time until the black market caused a divide.

Yahtz, are you saying the developers were too ambitious? Like they had reached too far and gotten hurt somehow? Like they had ascended to a level above their ability and as such ended up melting a vital binding agent holding onto many small things used to assist with motion and progress, resulting in useless apendages and dropping out of the sky, flightless? If only there were a way to bring that across with a bit of shorthand and a reference to an old Greek story...

Maybe redesign the Epic store to actually look, you know, epic. A black and gold color scheme (not unlike this game's box art) would fit the name much more than the same palette as Steam.
