To eject the hard drive without a screwdriver, first push on the front panel (the front of where the hard drive is situated), this will take a bit of tension off the slider on the base, then the slider can be moved with your finger.

I've been running the Cloudkey Gen2 Plus since they first became available in the early access store. I'm LOVING it. I have had no crashes, and everything swapped over from my old unifi controller seamlessly. Protect is leaps and bounds better than it was when it first came out, and it will only get better. Looking forward to seeing where they go with Protect.

How does that move from an old cloudkey work? Just plug the new one into the network, basic setup and then there's some migrate option? I have a small Unifi setup at home, but I'm not too well versed in the more advanced Ubiquiti stuff.

Man! You are doing a wonderful job with your videos! Keep Killing it! Just a note about the POE vs USB-C thing I think you would like... The Quick Charge "Capable" adapter you have has an automatic switcher built in. It will provide a basic charge current at first and then switch to the "Quick Charge" if it detects a higher draw of power than its currently providing. I'm guessing that the Cloud Key is detecting the lower power source before the wall adapter has a chance to increase the amperage... causing the Cloud Key to shut down. I imagine that the power source the device starts on is "Primary" and the other is a "Fail Over" that becomes the new Primary. So power will be drawn from the Primary until it's unavailable, and at that point, it will try to get power from the other. This would mean that plugging the USB-C in first made the wall adapter change into the higher Amp setting, so when unplugging the RJ-45, it was already on the higher Amp mode. A better USB-C wall adapter for this application would be a USB-C charger meant to power a laptop, that type of charger will always be providing a power source capable of the high Amperage the Cloud Key needs. (The phone adapter is designed in a way that it won't waste power, saving you money in the long run.)

My first ever experience with Ubiquiti gear (last week) was trying to adopt their 8port 150w switch and I ran into a similar automatic firmware upgrade problem. It took me a few hours to figure it all out since I was still new to their systems/concepts. Basically I could not adopt the switch because the firmware was out of date and I could not update the firmware from the controller. Therefore I went down a rabbit hole of figuring out how to ssh into the switch (after googling for default creds) and forcing a command line firmware upgrade. After that adoption happened smoothly. Pretty rough first customer experience but ever since it’s pretty slick.

Great video. I have this product, had to wait so long to get it, because of shipping to EU was messed up. I managed to migrate everything from the old cloud key to this one without any problem. Except when i removed the SD card from the old CK, and plugged it in to the new one, for some ODD reason the DPI feature got bugged and the database got corrupted, so I will have to do a repair on the DB when I have the time for it. The unifi protect is the reason I bought the device. It is amazing for this price point that features / storage / hardware / software combo they are giving. Ubiquiti is doing an amazing job with disrupting the market with their gear. I love them.

Have done around 10 of these now and just in the last 2 months the changes to the software UI have been great. I just did an upgrade to change out the HD and the instructions are not up to date. Replacing HD - upgrade to latest software - export the SDN config (you do not need the protect but I made a backup) - power down - replace HD - boot up - protect will work but SDN requires an import of the config Moving from an old Cloud Key and old NVR is a little more complicated - Backup both devices - unplug both devices - plug in new Gen 2 - login and configure the CKG2 - upgrade CKG2 - Setup the Protect and SDN using the backups - you will need to do all the zone and notifications settings again in the new Protect software. Make sure you verify all the settings because only the cameras will be imported but almost no settings and no recordings

I installed a UniFi system in my 3,200 square foot home after watching many of your videos (yes, I used your affiliate links). I agree with the others, the WiFi performance is outstanding and I'll never go back to consumer grade WiFi again. My system consists of an USG, 2 AC-Pros, a CloudKey (Gen1) and a Cisco 26 port PoE switch (had this before the UniFi). As much as I love the UniFi access points, I completely loath the Gen 1 CloudKey. It is constantly locking up and in need of reboot because it thinks the SD card has been removed when it hasn't. I'm guessing this is part of why that battery was added. It's nice to see that they've made that improvement. I'll wait to see how the new generation cloud keys work. If they have in fact solved that problem, I will likely upgrade.

The Nintendo Switch uses Power Delivery 2.0 while the cloud key uses Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0. While they are both USB-C type plugs, they are two different standards and therefore the Nintendo Switch adapter does not provide enough power for the cloud key. The Anker charger you bought support Quick Charge 2.0 standard hence it provides enough power.

Hey Chris, Protect 1.5.0 is out (just enable auto updates for Protect and it will grab it), that version fixed a bunch of issues with the live view. I have Protect deployed at 1 site with 5 cameras and 5Tb HDD, it used about 2.5Tb in 1 month time frame. I do like Protect so far. Things I did not like: compared to Hikvision system it lacks line crossing detection and Protect has to use Ubnt's e-mail server to send motion notifications. With Hikvision I send e-mail to my local server that grabs image out of e-mail and runs it thru Amazon Rekognition to see if there are people or vehicles on the photo and only then send an e-mail. P.S. 0.8.10 update worked fine for me, I had to click the upgrade 2 times though, first time it said something about failure to download. P.P.S. Did you try a micro SD slot on Cloud Key yet?

17:33 (Edit: Ubiquiti is using QC with USB-C instead of PD ☹️) USB-C power is PD or Power Delivery. Quick Charge 3.0 is not power delivery. I've been able to get QC3 to rapid charge PD devices, but it's very flakey. QC4.0 is supposed to be PD compatibile when it comes out. PD also requires compatible USB-C cables, which many are not. I ordered the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus as soon as it was available in the Early Access Store and have been very happy with performance so far. I’ve already deployed 2 of these to customers (13 & 4 cameras respectively) mainly for UniFi Protect functionality since I feel it’s more in line with consumer security cameras without having your footage store in the cloud. Being able to scrub through video on a single camera using the iOS app is brilliant. With every update to UniFi Protect it has gotten much better to have near feature parity with UniFi Video. Now that the UVC G4 camera is in the early access store I’m curious if you will have more features available pairing this with UniFi Protect vs. UniFi Video. I know many people have complained that UniFi Protect is only available using the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus but it’s a relatively small price to pay. My customers love it & are already looking to add more cameras due to low cost & quality compared to other vendors. Thanks Chris for making another quality Ubiquiti video, looking forward to watching your video focused on the UniFi Protect platform.

I have had a CKG2+ since the beta store and it has been great. I think the reason they are only charging $20 more for the plus is because once you add a camera to it you get addicted. I am up to 4 cameras right now with plans to add many more. Which is also bad because I need to buy more ubiquiti switches to handle the extra cameras but that is okay with me. The old unifi video platform device they sold was overpriced I feel like and this is a great new product. Protect isnt perfect but going from the original release it is far more stable and motion alerts are getting better with every update. Just with they had an official apple tv app but using a rtsp streaming app is ok with me.

I think that the problem with this CloudKey Gen 2 Plus issue is the fact that you cannot segregate the Management Network (for the cloud key management network) and the Security/ Video Network. I am not sure I want my camera on the same network as my management network on my network. I think that this need to added as an option to the configuration UI at some point.

I love this channel. Like others, I bought into UniFi, because of your videos. What I found was something completely unexpected. If you have anything custom, really custom... UniFi isn't the best solution. Because UniFi is SDN (Software Defined Networking)... it relies on the Controller in order to define the controller. The assumptions that the UniFi controller brings totally messed up my network. Also, I couldn't find a way to segment the radios in the latest version of the controller. Example: the 2Ghz network can't have a different SSID than the 5Ghz network. It did formerly. It doesn't now. So, in one version upgrade of the controller, I went from being able to have 4 WLANs to 2 WLANS, effectively destroying segmentation security protocols. There was no warning, nothing that would indicate that would change in the release notes. It just happened and suddenly I have 3/4 of my IoT devices that can't connect to the WLAN (because it didn't exist anymore). That level of poor release management controls is really amateurish and not something I would put in a small office where PCI, PII, or HIPAA certification is mandatory.

Chris, your videos are awesome!! Can you add in this one though that you have to go into your Unifi Switch and change the Cloud to 48 volts and show how that's accomplished?? Thanks

Great video, thanks for posting! I just picked up the Cloud Key Gen 2 and configured it over the weekend. Pretty cool device. I mis-read somewhere that the 1TB drive was also a Solid State, so I thought for the price it was FANTASTIC, however even with a HDD it is still a very good price. I also agree, at $50 just for the HDD, it is a no-brainier upgrade to the Plus model vs the standard one.

I am deciding between the Unifi Protect system vs Ring camera system. I'm not sure if you have seen Ring cameras. I would like some discussions between the systems. How long does it take to view the cameras? How well does the iOS app work? Does alerting function work well? What is ease of use when remote? Are there options to view on computer (I have a Mac) and/or TV? Are there other IoT integrations (Alexa, IFTTT, Homekit, etc.)?

Thanks for this specific video as well as your previous Unifi 'instructional' videos. In your future Unifi Protect focused production, I respectfully request you perform a comparison of the number of video cameras offered by Unifi as to their intended application(s). As I review these offerings, I can not comprehend which cameras are best used in what locations. Thank you...

Hey Chris. The affiliate link for Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus that goes to Ubiquiti store is giving me a 404 error. I bought a basic Unifi setup including the Colud Key Gen 2 plus using various affiliate links. Hope you got the commissions. Looking forward to using and learning this gear. Great job on the channel.

Maybe they should use the second Type-C port for adding more drives for expansion. (It’s labeled with a hard drive icon)

Hi there. Would you mind doing a video on Let's encypt certs for the UniFi controller on this unit? There are many guides, but are largely outdated (based on previous versions of the controller). I have my own domain and have my CKg2+ behind NAT. Would be greatly appreciated. Love your videos!

The problems you had migrating your site has been a common ubiquiti problem for a while and one reason why we as an MSP don’t deploy their stuff to clients. Just not reliable enough. I run a full unifi network at the house and like it but if anything in the chain fails, I have spare equipment to get me back up and running, but we’ll never deploy their USG at client sites until they can implement proper UTM features like what you get with Fortigate, Sophos, Pfsense, etc. We use Meraki AP’s and Catalyst switches even at small clients. We’ve yet to have any pushback on the price because that stuff is bulletproof and the clients have extra piece of mind. I really want to like the ubiquiti stuff for more than prosumer and small business use but without even a basic SSL VPN capability and proper IPV4 firewall rules, their stuff will stay in the home networks for us :(

ok here is my issue.. I setup a site at a clients house before I purchase and installed the gen 2 cloud key pro. I believe the controller i am using is my laptop ??? I have on the unifi network dashboard all the WAPs and the 2 network switches that i installed and all is working well. The issue is that the cloud key seems to be its own controller that only has the cameras on it and doesn't see any of the other devices on the network from its dashboard. How do i move the devices from the controller i originally setup to the cloud key?

Re: UniFi Protect. I’d just like to know what features it’s missing vs UniFi video. It used to not have full time recording capability. Not sure if that’s still true.

The main issue IMO is that you can't run UniFi Protect on your own hardware.

when you do the unifi protect may be talk a bit about the difference between the nvr system and the new system via the CK gen2 + hard drive. Will it replace the old system or can they work together

I have an existing network and a ubiquity cloud key that I’m trying to add, the console is on a laptop, I’ve seen online I have to back that up and restore the cloud key using that backup, but when I try to connect the laptop to just the cloud key I can’t get them to connect using the discovery tool…

With the "Enable Cloud Access" function, could you enable it on an ad-hoc basis? So for example have cloud access disabled whilst you are at home but then easily enable it for access whilst you are at work or on holiday perhaps?
