Man! You are doing a wonderful job with your videos! Keep Killing it! Just a note about the POE vs USB-C thing I think you would like... The Quick Charge "Capable" adapter you have has an automatic switcher built in. It will provide a basic charge current at first and then switch to the "Quick Charge" if it detects a higher draw of power than its currently providing. I'm guessing that the Cloud Key is detecting the lower power source before the wall adapter has a chance to increase the amperage... causing the Cloud Key to shut down. I imagine that the power source the device starts on is "Primary" and the other is a "Fail Over" that becomes the new Primary. So power will be drawn from the Primary until it's unavailable, and at that point, it will try to get power from the other. This would mean that plugging the USB-C in first made the wall adapter change into the higher Amp setting, so when unplugging the RJ-45, it was already on the higher Amp mode. A better USB-C wall adapter for this application would be a USB-C charger meant to power a laptop, that type of charger will always be providing a power source capable of the high Amperage the Cloud Key needs. (The phone adapter is designed in a way that it won't waste power, saving you money in the long run.)

My first ever experience with Ubiquiti gear (last week) was trying to adopt their 8port 150w switch and I ran into a similar automatic firmware upgrade problem. It took me a few hours to figure it all out since I was still new to their systems/concepts. Basically I could not adopt the switch because the firmware was out of date and I could not update the firmware from the controller. Therefore I went down a rabbit hole of figuring out how to ssh into the switch (after googling for default creds) and forcing a command line firmware upgrade. After that adoption happened smoothly. Pretty rough first customer experience but ever since it’s pretty slick.

Have done around 10 of these now and just in the last 2 months the changes to the software UI have been great. I just did an upgrade to change out the HD and the instructions are not up to date. Replacing HD - upgrade to latest software - export the SDN config (you do not need the protect but I made a backup) - power down - replace HD - boot up - protect will work but SDN requires an import of the config Moving from an old Cloud Key and old NVR is a little more complicated - Backup both devices - unplug both devices - plug in new Gen 2 - login and configure the CKG2 - upgrade CKG2 - Setup the Protect and SDN using the backups - you will need to do all the zone and notifications settings again in the new Protect software. Make sure you verify all the settings because only the cameras will be imported but almost no settings and no recordings

I installed a Cloud Key Gen2 Plus at my church 4+ years ago to monitor and record activity on a few cameras. It was, overall, a good experience. The equipment installed cleanly and has done exactly what we needed. It has chewed through HDDs -- not too surprising since I have it configured to record activity 24/7. I just installed my second replacement (3rd drive, including the original) a couple of months ago, so I am averaging about two years on a disk. Replacing the disks has been remarkably easy -- just take the old one out and pop the new one in and away we go. But I do have a complaint -- the Cloud Key system uses 2.5" drives. There are lots of solid and affordable drive options for 3.5" disks designed for NVR applications, but in the 2.5" form factor there are pretty much only laptop drives. I suspect that running a generic 2.5" drive in my NVR application is a large part of the reason my disks are living short lives. If I ever need to upgrade this system (or install a new one) I will still use Ubiquiti -- I love their gear. But I will spend a bit more money and get a larger NVR station with drive bays appropriate for my application.

Hey Chris, Protect 1.5.0 is out (just enable auto updates for Protect and it will grab it), that version fixed a bunch of issues with the live view. I have Protect deployed at 1 site with 5 cameras and 5Tb HDD, it used about 2.5Tb in 1 month time frame. I do like Protect so far. Things I did not like: compared to Hikvision system it lacks line crossing detection and Protect has to use Ubnt's e-mail server to send motion notifications. With Hikvision I send e-mail to my local server that grabs image out of e-mail and runs it thru Amazon Rekognition to see if there are people or vehicles on the photo and only then send an e-mail. P.S. 0.8.10 update worked fine for me, I had to click the upgrade 2 times though, first time it said something about failure to download. P.P.S. Did you try a micro SD slot on Cloud Key yet?

17:33 (Edit: Ubiquiti is using QC with USB-C instead of PD ☹️) USB-C power is PD or Power Delivery. Quick Charge 3.0 is not power delivery. I've been able to get QC3 to rapid charge PD devices, but it's very flakey. QC4.0 is supposed to be PD compatibile when it comes out. PD also requires compatible USB-C cables, which many are not. QC is basically dead, Google told all phone vendors they need to use open Power Delivery standard on USB-C.

Except when i removed the SD card from the old CK, and plugged it in to the new one, for some ODD reason the DPI feature got bugged and the database got corrupted, so I will have to do a repair on the DB when I have the time for it. I ordered the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus as soon as it was available in the Early Access Store and have been very happy with performance so far. I’ve already deployed 2 of these to customers (13 & 4 cameras respectively) mainly for UniFi Protect functionality since I feel it’s more in line with consumer security cameras without having your footage store in the cloud. Being able to scrub through video on a single camera using the iOS app is brilliant. With every update to UniFi Protect it has gotten much better to have near feature parity with UniFi Video. Now that the UVC G4 camera is in the early access store I’m curious if you will have more features available pairing this with UniFi Protect vs. UniFi Video. I know many people have complained that UniFi Protect is only available using the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus but it’s a relatively small price to pay. My customers love it & are already looking to add more cameras due to low cost & quality compared to other vendors. Thanks Chris for making another quality Ubiquiti video, looking forward to watching your video focused on the UniFi Protect platform.

I installed a UniFi system in my 3,200 square foot home after watching many of your videos (yes, I used your affiliate links). I agree with the others, the WiFi performance is outstanding and I'll never go back to consumer grade WiFi again. My system consists of an USG, 2 AC-Pros, a CloudKey (Gen1) and a Cisco 26 port PoE switch (had this before the UniFi). As much as I love the UniFi access points, I completely loath the Gen 1 CloudKey. It is constantly locking up and in need of reboot because it thinks the SD card has been removed when it hasn't. I'm guessing this is part of why that battery was added. It's nice to see that they've made that improvement. I'll wait to see how the new generation cloud keys work. If they have in fact solved that problem, I will likely upgrade.

The Nintendo Switch uses Power Delivery 2.0 while the cloud key uses Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0. While they are both USB-C type plugs, they are two different standards and therefore the Nintendo Switch adapter does not provide enough power for the cloud key. The Anker charger you bought support Quick Charge 2.0 standard hence it provides enough power.

I have had a CKG2+ since the beta store and it has been great. I think the reason they are only charging $20 more for the plus is because once you add a camera to it you get addicted. I am up to 4 cameras right now with plans to add many more. Which is also bad because I need to buy more ubiquiti switches to handle the extra cameras but that is okay with me. The old unifi video platform device they sold was overpriced I feel like and this is a great new product. Also keep in mind to not rotate the cloudkey upside-down when it is turned on! The hard drive for the recordings is an old mechanical hard drive, and they don't like rotating while it's running 😉

Hi Chris - Two Questions: 1 ... Will the Gen 2 Plus function without the hard drive plugged in? I don't have (Ubiquiti) cams, so was thinking of just getting the Gen 2, But like you say, for $20 more (AMZ) .. hey. 2 ... I'm currently running the browser based Unifi Controller on Win 10 (java enabled, etc.) and my Unifi network is all set up (thanks to many of YOUR videos) With the Gen 2 (or 2 Plus, will I be able to Import my existing network into the Cloud Key ? Or will I have to start over. Note: I do NOT have a Ubiquiti Cloud account. Everything is local. Thx.Joe

Hey Chris. The affiliate link for Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus that goes to Ubiquiti store is giving me a 404 error. I bought a basic Unifi setup including the Colud Key Gen 2 plus using various affiliate links. Hope you got the commissions. Looking forward to using and learning this gear. Great job on the channel.

I talked to ubnt support and the said only drives that are 9.5mm in depth are supported. Maybe you can try with the drive you suggested? L Can you do a video on all of the things you can do with the key plus?

I don't need the Protect features, but as you pointed out, the Plus model is only $20 more. I am wondering if In could put a 5tb hard drive into the Plus and map the drive so that my network could utilize the storage space for other content?

Hi Chris, It's interesting to see after you updated the FW on the CK the eMMC storage "shrinked" down from 25.49 GB to 18.70 GB. What could be the reason? Thanks.

Gerhard Tánczos That’s shoeing the available space, the updated firmware must have been a larger file size.

Hi, let me ask you something... Do you know if the old uvc-dome camera model is compatible with this cloud key? And BTW, great video, as usual. =)

Great video. Is the device fanless? Is it suitable for a loft or attic installation where there could be some moisture in the air? Thanks

Might be a stupid question can the cloud key see what’s local plugged in to the switch and show it on the cloud?

So this cloud key is only for cameras or does it act like a full controller?

Chris, Which is a better solution for capturing video from your security camera, the NVR or the UCK gen 2+? The UCK appears to be less expensive with the 1TB drive. Does the NVR require a separate cloud key?

Chris, your video made me upgrade my local running controller to a cloudkey gen2+, but i cannot get the external (worldwide) access working. Can you show us the way how to do this? Do you have a video of this?

If you are not running cameras is there any reason to purchase the plus version? Any other uses for that storage?
