I also think the fact that thare’s no soundtrack (except for “roar” at the end)helps build the suspense and terror of this film even more.

I forgot to mention in the video the soundtrack or lack thereof, as it helped the movie feel more like a real life event captured on camera. The soundtrack by Michael Giacchino was great imo.

I remember being very confused by this movie when I was younger. It gives me that 2000s nostalgia. I got it on DVD sometime around 2010 I believe. The disc package had this little book inside (it was a really nice addition and mentioned for example how JJ Abrams came up with the idea). By that point I had a very vague idea of a typical monster movie so 'Project Monster' as Cloverfield was named intrigued me. The found footage style was something I haven't seen up to that point and at the end of the film young me went: 'Did the monster just win?'. This movie along with Independence Day probably ingrained a fascination with monsters and aliens in my subconscious.

I miss the 2000s as well, back when the internet was a simple yet fun thing, kids of my generation enjoyed life both indoors and outdoors, and when 21st century cinema was at its peak. I remember when this movie was coming out, but unfortunately didn’t see it in theaters.

The good days. I became interested in Godzilla around 2015 due to AMV's (sadly missing 2014 in theaters). I don't know if you were a G-fan in the 2000s but I have a strange fascination with the so-called dry era (the 2004-2014 gap). Sometimes I stumble upon an old article about that cancelled 3d movie or 2009 rumors about a Legendary Godzilla film (sometimes this can be funny like those pessimistic posts: we'll never see another G-film, it will be all american from now on, Toho Godzilla is no more, it's the end of suitmation) or early 2006-2009 Matt Frank fan art that I can't find anywhere except one low resolution KZbin video. Even now in 2022 is still go back to Godzilla419's channel to listen to updates on Legendary Godzilla from 2011. I don't know why but it gives me strong nostalgia even though I wasn't aware of the franchise back then (maybe because I was born in the 2000s?).

What do you think of Cloverfield? Is there any other American non-Godzilla kaiju movie that’s worth a second watch? What do you think of the mysteries and lore surrounding the CloverVerse? Feel free to comment down below, as I’d like to see different discussion and debate about the mysterious nature of this film, since so much of the story and worldbuilding outside of the movie(s) is more interesting than the movie itself.

I like this movie because it uses the found footage style of filmmaking which is one of my favorite and least favorite genres. I love found footage because it gives me nostalgia with all the "bigfoot" or "alien" sightings that were posted on early KZbin, but I also don't like it because I don't like shaky cam for long amounts of time. So do I think Cloverfield utilizes the found footage well? Kind of, but I didn't really like whenever Cloverfield was on screen its mostly shaking cam. Troll Hunter is a great example of how I think found footage should be used, but anyways I like the monster Clover because he looks like something out of nightmares and the parasites are very effective at being scary and unnerving. Also sorry for not commenting earlier, I don't think I received the notification for this video.

Before I discuss what I think of the film I wanna say this first because I see it alot when discussing CloverField I understand why people complain about Clover starting the trend of long, slender and multi-limb monsters yet the same thing can be said about Godzilla since he kinda started the trend of Kaiju having the outdated t-rex posture and besides I don’t really mind it. Anyway about the film short answer it’s decent, The monster is cool, found footage stuff give me anxiety every time I visit a big city, and marketing is better than the actual movie not to say the movie is bad of course.

Cloverfield did technically start the whole monsters having long, lanky legs, giant mouth with sharp teeth with a pale grey color scheme design trend, but movie monster designs always come in trends. It’s funny you mentioned that cuz recently I was watching both Nerdstalgic’s video on the problem with modern day movie monster designs and Omni Viewer’s response video to Nerdstalgic. I don’t mind movie monsters having pale grey skin or having alien like features to make them scarier, more unsettling or otherworldly, but it does become cliche when most movie monsters burrow the same design template over and over. It would be nice to have movie monsters with a vibrant color scheme or more naturalistic features seen in earth’s wildlife since there are animals that exist today that are look freaky and dare I say: otherworldly.

@UClxQ36S08qTyXOpHUmjhVVg I understand Nerdslagic points on that topic, it does not mean I agree with it. Especially the part where he says most of them look very similar or the same I don’t remember exactly and I’m just like “dude how the hell is the Demogorgon look even close like the Mutos” (but I may just have eye problems or something) Though I do agree Hollywood needs to come up with more interesting designs for monsters or actually make monster movies because I have seen a lack of them recently and I do not like it (Also what I mean by monster movies I’m talking about monsters i’m talking about small ones like the Xenomorph or predator)

@@titanuskolasaurus2050 Nerdstalgic got some things wrong for sure, he didn’t bother mentioning how movie monster trends are a thing and have been a trend since the beginning, or how does H.R. Gegir not being involved in creating the other movie monsters ripping off or inspired by the Alien he designed, have to do with them not having the impact as his Alien design? Plus not all movie monster designs look the same or are the same, sure they have similarities and technically aren’t innovative or revolutionary, but I still think some of them are pretty cool like the skull crawlers, MV Ghidorah, Kraken from CotT etc. If there’s one thing he does get right is that none of these creatures feel scary or threatening since they aren’t treated as characters in their own right, just a bunch of cgi monsters that roar and destroy or look fake a lot of the times since the cgi is rushed and unpolished at times, and probably won’t be as iconic as some of the older movie monsters.

@@SaurianStudios1207 You know I do think there is one reason CGI in monster horror movies nowadays looks weird and bad. It’s because they use too much of the monster. Because what I’ve noticed is that small budget movies that have CGI monsters show the monster sparingly and somehow the CGI looks better than movies where they have a higher budget. So my theory is that Since to use so much CGI because there’s a monster in the scene so much for CGI starts look rushed or unpolished because they use it too much. So I hope in the future They use CGI sparingly only important parts for example when the monster is doing something or moving that’s very complex that special effects can’t do or even close to simulate.

Where was all this criticism from the monsterverse movies you literally broke down everything wrong and good about the movie. But when it comes down to the monsterverse it gets a pass because "well it has monster fights that are great" nahhh at least cloverfield tried to give use good characters. Look I'm not trying to sit up here and act like cloverfield is all around great but still the monsterverse doesn't even try and the monster fights aren't even good plus the Lord keep getting redcon in the comic books and the movies. So it's a mess of a universe in general.
