Bruce and Alfred's relationship is one of the most criminally overlooked aspects of Arkham Origins. So I thought it would only be right to shine some light on it, and their One Amazing Scene.

One Amazing Scene: Sometimes greatness goes unnoticed. One Amazing Scene attempts to remedy that by shining light on the often overlooked moments in games. Scenes that have a much larger story impact than most realize. Scenes that show a significant moment of character development, or brilliance in design. Regardless of what they do, they're all amazing.

I absolutely adore the dynamic between Bruce and Alfred in this game. It shows just how much Alfred matters in Bruce’s life and how much he needed to accept that.
@crazydud3380
@crazydud3380 7 ай бұрын
Agreed, absolutely! It is a dynamic that is often left underexplored. They started to remedy that in the Nolan trilogy, but it really is perfected here. As noted in the video, they are both partially right and partially wrong. Batman is right on pointing out the impact he is having and what he is accomplishing, and Alfred is right on pointing out that tonight he is outmatched and will die. They are both wrong in that Batman thinks it is best if he operates solo, and that allies are a hindrance, in Alfred is wrong not to see him as the master vigilante that he is. By the end they come to understand each other, and both benefit from it. Alfred learns why Bruce is doing this and why he must continue, and Batman realizes he cannot do this entirely on his own. Allies are not a hindrance . . . they are his greatest strength.

I love Kevin Conroy's performance as Batman, but ever since his work in The New Batman Adventures, we've only really seen a well-seasoned and more hardened Batman. Roger Craig Smith does a fantastic job giving the impression that this Batman is very new to the job. He's more emotional, much more angry, and I love that his voice actor decided to try and convey that side of Bruce instead of doing a Kevin Conroy impression. It makes Origins!Bruce the most unique version in the games and imo one of my favorite portrayals of Batman in media.

i admire the story showing alfred and bruce's viewpoints on being batman , alfred being that he wishes that bruce doesnt throw his life away whilst bruce stating how he is the ultimate force that enduces fear upon the criminals and helping to make gotham a better place.Since bruce isnt concerned about dying , seeing alfred almost died really has shown how, without his allies , he would struggle and would even perish, showing how being batman can put your closest ones in danger , then alfred begins to understand why bruce is persistent on being batman, its incredible how batman then realises and becomes a better man. im glad that the devs had put more focus onto this

Something I realized is that as Batman was trying to force others to leave him alone and insists on being an “island”, Jim is the same way towards Bruce. And when Bruce asks for help, Jim does the same, and help Batman. Even when Bruce asks Jim to give him the security codes for the fire doors, Jim refuses while Bruce is still in the mindset of “I work alone”.

Hard to blame Gordon. He has lasted this long by trusting no one but himself. It is hard for him to accept that his first ally is not one of his fellow cops he works with every day, but with an illegal vigilante. By the end of the game, he comes around. Bruce has a character, Alfred has a character arc, Gordon has a character arc, and Joker has a character arc. Great stuff and does exactly what a prequel should do.

In my opinion, this is my second favorite Arkham game, but this is my favorite scene. The reason being that it shows this outstanding dynamic built between Bruce and Alfred. Alfred, just wanting to see Bruce not throw his life away simply for vengeance, confronting Bruce next to the prepped Batwing, just for Bruce to completely brush him off, is excellent. It shows how, for lack of a better word, arrogant Batman is in his early years. It also adds further impact to Alfred's death scene, their last real conversation being an unbalanced confrontation. It's perfect story building and characterization.

After playing Origins, I love to hear how much Bruce says 'Thanks, Alfred' in City and Knight. Shows that he does appreciate all the work Alfred does. Though he does fail to properly thank Dick, Tim and Barbara most of the time, but I guess he hasn't known them as long

@crazydud3380
@crazydud3380 6 ай бұрын
@@govardhanposina17That may have a lot to do with it. Alfred is part of this, despite not really choosing it, so he deserves gratitude for it. The others did chose this, so Batman ultimately expects the same from them as he expects from himself. He actually does show Oracle a certain level of gratitude, probably because Barbera's new role on the team was forced upon her. I feel Knight also implies he became a bit more distant, and less amenable to their help because, after Jason was supposedly killed, he likely felt the pain of losing family all over again, hence he distanced. This is a common response to the premature death of a loved one in real life, and Joker knows better than anyone that Batman's psyche is not entirely healthy and whole, so it makes total sense.

Arkham Origins has BY FAR the best Bruce Wayne and Batman. He actually feels human, and not as a vehicle for gameplay and narrative like in Asylum, or someone who tortures himself with zero happiness or emotion like in Knight. We need more of THIS Batman. One that we as the audience can emotionally connect and relate to, unlike Asylum, City, and Knight which lack this aspect a bit, and one that needs his allies to succeed. If only we had more interpretations like this. This emotional connection to Bruce himself, proving that Bruce Wayne is just as, if not more important than Batman, is what makes Origins by far my favorite Arkham game.

Honestly when I originally played through the game, I was so invested in the story the fact that we know Alfred survives never even occurred to me. For a brief moment I was legitimately thinking “I got a save Alfred! I can’t let him die here.” Like the character I was playing as I felt like I had failed Alfred. That is something that most prequels can’t do. Help me so invested in the story of the characters that I can overlook what I know comes later.

The Alfred and Bruce drama appears to be a common trope we've seen for every Batman universe. The Dark Knight Trilogy, Batman V. Superman, The Batman, even Telltale's Batman had it too. Origins may be the best version of this trend after watching this video essay. Thanks a lot.

This scene is one of my favourites in the Batman Arkham games. I can see both sides of Bruce and Alfred's argument: Alfred sees Bruce heading down a destructive path in his pursuit of justice. He is worried that one night Batman may not make it back home alive and Alfred would live with the same trauma that consumed Bruce after he lost his parents. With no one else standing up to the villains and the crooked cops on their payroll, Batman is, "the only THING" that is making an effort in cleaning up Gotham's streets. Spreading fear into the hearts of criminals, to him, is the only effective method on bringing about justice.

Origins was the first game in this series that I watched. A friend gave me this game for Christmas early and told me to open it on the eve and play it at midnight. So I did and that night was one of the best gaming experiences that ive ever had. The atmosphere fit because of tje time of year and as a rookie of the series I fit in well with bruce being a rookie as batman. Alfred's death wasn't a gotcha moment to others, it was a gut wrenching moment that had me in disbelief. My introduction couldn't have been better and it is why for all of its flaws, origins is my favourite arkham game

"Bruce needing to realize he is not an island" isn't just the theme of *this* game, it's arguably the biggest running theme of the series. Bruce relapses on this question quite frequently, rejecting Robin's offers to help in both City and Knight, rejecting most of Nightwing's offers in Knight, and in lying to Gordon about Barbara. Hell, the Arkham Knight himself is fueled by (misplaced) anger over having been rejected as an ally.

Well in batman vr we get to see why Batman refuses help from Robin and knightwing because of the fact that he is scared to lose them or even be killed by Bruce himself. In Arkham knight the relationship between Robin and knightwing also greatly decreases since joker is constantly mocking batman by making him see that he failed to save Jason , joker also gives plenty of speeches that batman is no good and he always fails to keep his loved ones save. I think when Bruce created the bat family he became more scared and fearful that some force will get rid of his own family one by one or the idea that he failed to save Jason made him become more of his inexperience young counter part.

Great scenes. Makes me want to imagine the dialogue that Bane and Alfred have as the former trashes the Batcave and assaults the latter. Similar to Bane's actions in Knightfall where he trashes the mansion, beats up Alfred and simply waits there for Bruce to return home exhausted. Alfred sees for himself just how sick and twisted Bruce's enemies really are (something comics Bane takes as a compliment), and how important it is that someone be around to stop them from preying on the innocent.

One way you can tell this game was ahead of its time is the fact Robert Pattinson's The Batman basically rips this scene off with the fakeout death of Alfred and the reconciliation with Andy Serkis' Alfred later. (I daresay this game established and developed the relationship between its Batman and Alfred far better. Considering The Batman has like two Alfred scenes and that's it.) Also, this theme of Batman learning to put aside his ego and let people help him was expertly explored for pretty much the entirety of Lego Batman, which came years after. Arkham Origins, Lego Batman, and The Batman. Three of the best pieces of Batman media in recent years feature this theme, and Origins was the first to touch on it.

My favourite thing in Arkham Origins is Bane. His intelligence is highly shown here, with him finding out Batmans identity. Not to mention his strength is also good aswell, throwing Batman around like he's NOTHING. His final fight (The second half) in Origins 100% the best Bane fight we'll get. It shows his power and the monster he had to become to gain that power. His design is really faithful to the comics, but the one thing holding him back is his the fact he gets dumb downed at the end to match his other appearences.

I think its fair to say that Alfred's "death" really affected this version of Bruce. Because he doesn't want people getting directly involved in other games. Especially in Knight where he wants to keep Tim safe despite knowing that the situation outside would require more help. I think that seeing Oracle's death via Fear Toxin brought the memories of seeing Alfred's corpse back up and he decided best Tim hate him than be in any risk

Been waiting for this because I knew you'd do it eventually. This scene is perfect. It's batman pushing himself too far because of the promise he made to protect the city and alfred doubting him because of how far he's going. Both characters are right, but Bruce is just ultimately a dick about it, thinking he's more than a man. And it lends itself perfectly to when we see alfred die because of batman overextending himself, when we see the roles reverse and it's now Bruce doubting his abilities and alfred willing him on. Just a magnificent story.

This is absolutely my favorite Arkham game, by far. And it’s because of the character relationships that are handled SO perfectly in this game. It reminded me a lot of the DCAU in how much emotion and thoughtful storytelling was put into every inch of the characterization. Batman’s characterization was very similar to the DCAU Batman, which threw me back to my childhood. Even if the game mechanics weren’t perfect, the story was as close to perfect as it can be. And the mechanics aren’t so broken that it distracts from the story. The story stays front and center and is so damn compelling

With Alfred’s death scene, and pretty much all prequel stories, it’s never about what is going to happen or where it’s going; the events inform the characters and provide new context that didn’t previously exist. Alfred’s death does a good job at interrogating what Bruce is willing to risk for justice; and it turns out, not much when it comes to his family. On to character deaths as a whole, I’m typically never sold on it unless there are other characters to have a strong reaction. Take Arkham Knight for example. The Ace Chemicals explosion and lugging the neutralizing agent across the room actually tricked me for a moment. If you allowed me to think about it I wouldn’t fall for it so easily, but the swelling music and genuine pleading from Alfred for Bruce to save himself had me slapped to the wall, thinking this would be the end; that is, until Joker showed up. The same principle applies to Origins, and Bruce’s reaction. Bruce goes from a somber plead, to kneeling down in his failure, and then rejecting that outcome with rage. He goes on to think of a quick solution and saves Alfred, but it still has some big consequences on his psyche, and it takes a really good pep talk from Alfred himself, reassuring Bruce of what he needs to do. And that is why I think having Alfred “die” was a good choice.

I don’t know if anyone’s said this yet but I think my favorite exchange between the 2 is when Alfred says that he should be careful of kids seeing him pattering across rooftops and Batman goes “I don’t..patter” and Alfred just sighs🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣the line delivery is just perfect😂😂😂

I would legit argue that is the best wrtten story in the entire arkham series. Yes, even when it's joker again, but even that part is written quit well if you ask me. Really wish this game would also get a ps4 remaster someday.

I hope to see this kind of relationship dynamic featured in the next movie/TV show reboot, or even an animated origin story of sorts (akin to Sumerman: man of Tomorrow, which is set in its own continuity). All other Batman origin stories depict Alfred as being nonplussed by seeing the boy he raised, growing up to become "hardened vigilante," and he typically just rolls with it. Here, Alfred is more of a character and unsung hero, a caring surrogate father, and the heart and soul of this story. This dynamic absolutely needs to return to any Batman stories set early in his career.

man, i never got to play arkham origins because my first console was a ps4 and it was never remastered. i remember watching a playthrough of it because my dad played city and asylum but as a child under 13 i always just played the game and badly, now i replayed arkham asylum and city for myself because of the remaster and it was better than i remember, i still need to play origins because i love it when there's a police vs batman situation and i love the combat feeling and just the story in general.

I’ve been saying for a while that Origins reminded me a lot of the old animated series with its tone and setting. That’s the one main reason that I hold this game so high up in my ranking for the series.

Freaking Right Great Analysis There is a Reason why arkham origins is one of my favorite stories and favorite story in the arkham games Great Job I absolutely adore the dynamic between Bruce and Alfred in this game. It shows just how much Alfred matters in Bruce’s life and how much he needed to accept that. while Bruce does not realize it until alfred dies its a shame this game is criminally underated but now seems to be getting the love and attention it deserves

This was always my favorite game in the saga, I still remember playing it when I was a child and enjoying it even without understanding the story well, I can't imagine how much I would enjoy it today understanding all this context, I hope one day a remastered version of this beautiful game will reach us to be able to play it again

I’ve seen many people complain that Bruce telling Alfred that if he didn’t call Gorden bane would be in custody is wrong what they don’t get is that that’s the point Bruce doesn’t realise Alfred is the reason he’s still alive

Arkham Origins will always be ranked lower than most of the other Arkham games, but being ranked with some of the top-tier superhero games is super impressive, especially with it being Warner Montreal's first try at a batman game(I may be incorrect with this, but still probably their second try if so)
