An in-depth analysis of an amazing villain often overlooked, Hugo Strange. I love Strange in Arkham City, but a lot of people give him some pretty harsh flack as the main villain. So, I felt it was only right to give this beautiful bastard the love he deserves with his own amazing scene. Perfect analysis of the character of strange. He goes from cold and emotionless thinking that nobody is unbeatable to thinking of himself as unbeatable. He became the opposite of what he started as and at the end he was afraid to realize he was on the brink of failure. All these strings he pulled to make his plan come true came to nothing in the end because he thought too highly of himself and prepared for everything but the possibility of batman actually being able to take him down.

That’s why I love the Arkham series, each character has so much depth to them. If only look at them with a quick glance like with strange it seems like lazy writing but as soon as you take a closer look you will realize that there’s more than meets the eye.

Strange easily gets overshadowed by a majority of Batman’s iconic rogues gallery that is present in this game, but what truly makes Strange stand out amidst the many villains present is Corey Burton’s performance, can’t stress enough just how good it is.

I honestly found it surprising to see Hugo Strange playing a major role in Arkham City. Even though you couldn’t see him throughout most of the game, you knew he was keeping an eye on you, along with everything that was happening. It was amazing to see everything he planned out, and you never knew who was really pulling the strings until much later down the line.

One detail I love is that when you defeat all of the Tyger Guards in the tower and before you hack the console, if you scan Hugo in Detective Mode, you can see that he’s extremely nervous. Which means he IS afraid of Batman, like you think he’s unstoppable and untouchable and when you finally confront him he’s nothing

I reckon Hugo is arguably the most underrated villain in the series, everyone talks about Joker, complains about Riddler and talks about how underused the like of Two-Face, Deathstroke and Black Mask were, but I don't hear a lot of people talk about Strange, probably my second favourite Arkham villain, after Riddler

I still think it's a problem that to get ultimate understanding of this story you need to do everything in the game: read all texts, hear all dialogues and tapes, complete all side quest. But still, it's one of the best Batman incarnation of all time. It's definitely best in the series

I feel like nobody realised the subtle hint that he works for ra’s al ghul, in one of the predator sections before you confront strange. He says a line that ends with we are the future of Gotham, which is what ra’s said where he is the announcer before you meet talia and fight him

With Strange counting down until Protocol 10, it would be amazing if there was a game mode which actually put a time clock on how long you have until he activates it. So kinda like I Am The Knight in Origins, but instead it'd be a time limit on the whole game up until Protocol 10 activates. Probably not as many hours as he has, but perhaps cut down to 5 or something. Putting a lot of pressure on the player to not screw up.

my only problem with this scene is this causes absolutely NO internal conflict for Batman. his actions inspired a madman to kill hundreds of criminals, and what is his reaction? to beat him up and forget about it.

My favorite thing about Strange mentioning Protocol 10 in the beginning of the game is that it was a deliberate ploy by Strange to keep Batman in Arkham City, because he knew that so long as there was an ominous threat hanging over the city, Batman would never leave it be. Thus Batman would be compelled to remain in Arkham City right up until Protocol 10 started, all so Batman would be there to witness his victory. Also, I think a possible reason Strange was nervous at the end was overlooked. Remember what Strange said about being Batman's successor? I think part of the reason he was nervous in that scene was because he was anticipating Batman's reaction. I think he expected Batman to concede that Stange had won, admit that his methods of battling crime and corruption were superior, and for Batman to decalre that Strange was exactly that: Batman's successor, and hand the mantle over. I think Strange had a very similar opinion to Joker when it comes to Batman. He sees Batman as someone who's constantly fighting against his own violent tendencies because he believes that deep down, Batman WANTS to be like Ra'as Al Ghul, who can and will kill fornthe greater good. But Batman's mental conditionng and morals are too strong, so he can't break free of them. So Strange thinks that showing Batman that he can do whatnhe believed Batman always wanted to do but couldn't, by which I mean truly ERADICATE Gotham's criminal element, he would free Batman from these contraints and convince him to let Strange take up his mantle and calling. He almost came across like a college student handing in their thesis, or something like that. I believe that on a twisted way, Strange saw himself as a student of both Batman and Ra'as Al Ghul, one who had suprassed both his teachers and was nervously anticipating their reaction to his work, and was using his confidence and bravado to hide this. Making it that much more satisfying when not just one, but BOTH the people he saw as his mentors turned their backs on him, and his response tontat was tontake them both down with him, ensuring that only Strange's work would be remebered and completed.

You know that “I am your successor” line is way more potent when you listen to riddlers interview tapes. One of which implies that Hugo idolizes Batman and the desire to be the hero, that he actually has a Batman suit hidden away. One that he wears and questions if he’s even worthy to be the hero he thinks Batman cannot be.

I think my favorite part of the game was when you’re walking up to the Joker fight in the steel mill and before you make it to the door Strange announces Protocol 10 will commence in 10 minutes. It’s the very essence of Batman to me, there’s no way he can stop both villains at the same time, it’s over no matter what, but Batman still fights no matter what. Every time I play I get chills there

An interesting bit of information that you will only get if you have read the batman comics is that Hugo Strange was experimenting with a drug similar to titan all the way back in his second appearance. This means that strange may have orchestrated the events of Arkham Asylum as well. Another interesting fact is that he had the opportunity to kill batman the first time they met but chose to torture him instead. A mistake that he also makes in this game.

Possible, but I think that still left the plan up to chance. One of the council members is almost certainly Gordon, who we all know is incorruptible. He couldn't be paid off no matter how hard Strange tried, especially since he and Strange are at each other's throats constantly behind the scenes. With that in mind, the rest of the members would have had to vote with Gordon. There's always the chance the members he did bribe go against the agreement and still vote no.

The cutscene in the bank where joker reveals himself in origins is my favourite moment in the franchise hand downs. It encapsulates everything great about a tense situation. I wont go in depth here but I have so much to talk about when it comes to that cutscene. For me, I like the way Hugo Strange was portrayed although I wish there was stakes when it came to Bruce's identity being revealed. All strange does is gloat a couple times and then...nothing. He threatens to reveal his identity to the public if Batman intervenes with Protocal 10 however Strange is informed that Batman is working to stop his plan MULTIPLE times but does nothing about it. I'm not sure what theyd do to add more stakes to the plot point so if they couldnt I would have preferred them to remove this altogether. The game wouldnt change whatsoever if Strange didnt know batmans identity. I dont know, it's just how I feel about it. I'm interested to see if people disagree.

Great video, though I don't think it's cocky for Strange to assume that the city council will vote in his favour. Strange has complete control of the mayor, and enough sway to arrest Bruce Wayne with no justification - it's not a stretch to think that the rest of the city council is under his thumb. Gordon was probably the only person there who wasn't dirty. The fact that they're preparing Arkham City clones in Metropolis and Keystone makes it seem to me that Strange's web of contacts goes way beyond Sharp.

Quick comment. The "calm, nervous, terrified" conditions are based off heart rate. There is a possibility that he's not nervous, he's still cocky. He's just excited, as anybody would be. Planning something this elaborate, seeing it come to fruition, seeing the city in flames, and then seeing the batman, who is your idol/who you want to become, defeat your guards and then come face to face with you, would absolutely get his blood pumping.

This is possible, but not entirely true. Similar heart rates throughout the series have different conditions at times. Slow rates can also be injured, while higher ones can also mean crazed or agitated. It’s able to tell the difference between various conditions, despite similar rates.

Sure protocol 11 is to blow up the tower but what's the point of doing that, was it a way for Hugo to kill batman if somehow he lost, according to your video he believed he that he'd already won so there isn't any need for protocol 11, is the plan a way of Hugo tying up loose ends after arkham city was shut down after he won destroy all evidence that protocol 10 was always intended, or is it just a way of Hugo moving command centres to a different location if the tower was compromised, idk...
