When my ex husband was 15 he was homeless and got picked up for shoplifting a pair of jeans. The cop who arrested him bought the jeans, took him for lunch and arranged his bus fare back to his home town, where he at least had friends. My ex never forgot that cop. Literally changed his life. Sometimes all that takes is a hat and a pair of gloves.

I work at a retail store. We had someone last Christmas stealing food and drink. After talking to him, he said his parents just died, he was over 18 so he didn't know how to get help. My boss let him eat the meal in the dining area and warm up, and asked him to just ask us next time for something to eat. I appreciated the humanity of my boss that day.

I worked at a bagel shop when I was younger. On Christmas day, literally, a homeless man came inside and asked if we could give him a small cup of coffee. I told the general manager that I was going to give him coffee and also make him a plain bagel with cream cheese. He told me not to, because "if we give him food and drink, word would spread and more homeless people would come in asking for free things." He also, verbatim, said that this was because "bums run in packs like dogs." I told him it was fkn Xmas, and I was going to give it to him anyway. He told me I wasn't allowed, even if I paid for it. That I would be sent home and possibly terminated. I can't even tell you what an asshole this guy was. So, I told the homeless man to order whatever he wanted, made it for him and brought him a large coffee. When the manager got pissed, I ignored him and didn't bother paying for it. I gave the man a big hug and said merry Xmas. He told me he was sorry he stank. I told him everybody stinks sometimes and he said it was the best Christmases he's had in years. Anyway, this comment ended up being way too long. But, if you actually read this, thanks. This was the story of my last day working at the bagel shop, rage quitting on Christmas day. Always stand up for what is right and defend people who can't defend themselves. Merry Xmas to you and yours.

I had a bad drug addiction. Two weeks after joining an outpatient rehab, I got pulled over coming home from the rehab. I had warrants. They were unpaid traffic tickets. The officer asked where I was coming from. I told him. And he said, "look I'm not taking you to jail on your warrants, b/c I'm afraid you'll relapse after you leave jail... But please, got get your shit taken care of, and don't ever get back on drugs. I took care of them that month and never relapsed. I later went back years later with my newborn and thanked the officer. I got him a little present and gave him a hug. I told him how he changed my life, and he was the only cop that I had a good experience with. He started sobbing. I started sobbing. I will never forget him.

I was a street cop for ten years reading this post got me sobbing this hit home. I've had people I've encountered on the job thank me for not jamming them up when I could have done so. I always looked for other alternatives to help them get through whatever bad situation they are going through. Jail is not always the answer, it can just pile on more stress and make it worse to be honest most of the situations cops deal with are non violent petty misdemeanor crimes so there is a lot of wiggle room for discretion. There are a lot of good officers out there doing good things in the community showing empathy and compassion. It just did not get reported on enough, only the big negatives of a cop that does wrong get reported and the magnification of it makes us all look bad.

I’ve called non-dispatch before because I was homeless and living out of my car but I felt so vulnerable, I didn’t know where to park and feel safe. I asked if I could just park at the police station and it was approved. I KNEW that a police department would be safe and all I wanted was to be safe and sleep well because I felt safe. I’m sooooooo grateful for that dispatch and PD.

Well from some of the video my biggest worry would be a cop coming on the scene not knowing I had permission and they start harrassing or arrest me when he does not believe me. Also what happens if the person who gave you permission come home and this cops coming on duty shows up. I knew a lady who got stopped by the cop at the post office because they said she was at the gas station to long. They detained her for 3 hours trying to dream something to charge her. The drug dog was not even interested in the car and het they said the dog indicated there were drugs. They tore her cars apart damaging on of the seat. There are plenty of body cameras video of cops where people are explaining something and the cops does not listen and just start arresting them and if the person arrested pulls away once they start grabbing you they will treat you like a murder. I actually got arrested for reporting my own car stolen. In 30 seconds he decided that I was telling a lie and thus a false police report all because I still had my car key. So we get to the station and 30 min later I am released. Fortunally they never started the paperwork. If they did it could have been months before they decided to drop it, or if they drop at all and then I am stuck paying $1000's for a lawyer for there stupid mistake. Month if not years of axienty wondering if I would be stuck with a record for life. Also even bad arrest are listed for life and when cops see a arrest they do not aasume the cop made a mistake, they see it as the judge or prosecutor is weak or some BS crap. The USA taxpayer spend over 5 billion a year in excessive force, denial of rignt and false arrests lawsuit. Basically there is not one sitution that cops cannot make worse even as a victim. They do not tell me why I was released me either. I get home and talk to some neighbors and found out 5 other cars were stolen the same way and all the cars were like 2 blocks away and the cops already had the cars for evidence collection even before I called to report my car stolen. All the cars had there steering column tampered with and all the owner still had there key. I even said to the cop it is a older car and car can be hot wired. He screamed at me I had no clue what I was talking about. Instead he said I was probably drunk and lost my car. Well I am disabled Veteran so no I would not notice my car stolen at 6 am. In fact I only leave my home a few time a week. So it could be a few days before I noticed. Even today cars can be stolen without the keys. Cops will dream up conspiracy theory's off of nothing just so they can pad there arrest record. It just take one cop to to screw your whole life up. Never date a cop either. They have the highest rate of DV of any profession. I would like to say that there are good cops but the envionment does not allow them to speak up and get in the middle to protect you. Why? They will be seen as not being a team player and when they need back up follow cops will not show up. So this over time make good cops to be force to look away even though a crime is committed right in front of them. Body camera were meant to protect cops. It is obvious they are now there to protect you.

I know a guy that got a manslaughter charge for running from police over $15 of merchandise from a WalMart. He hit a lady that was sitting at a stop sign. He hit so hard that it knocked the engine block out of her car and into a yard nearby. He was driving a 1-ton dually, and it snapped the entire cab off his truck. The frame and flatbed of the truck was upright, while the cab was upside down and laying in front of the truck. It turned into a whole ordeal because the family of the woman was pissed that the police were chasing him over a small shoplifting crime, while the police were denying it.... Yet, they were trying to nail him with homicide since there was a death during the act of a crime He's in for 23 years right now

I was in Walmart several years ago with my twins. They were about 6 months old so I was shopping for formula, diapers, etc. I noticed this lady going up and down the isles with her baby in a carrier. I watched her put a small can of formula under the baby blanket and then decide to put it back but still kept looking at the formula. I could tell she was distressed. I walked up to her and asked if she needed help. She cried and explained to me that she needed formula for her baby and couldn't afford it. She wasn't nice, though. She told me to mind my own business. I told her I knew what it was like to struggle and asked her to get what she needed, and she grabbed that same small can of formula. I grabbed her 5 more. I also bout her baby diapers, clothes, wipes, and a couple of other things.

As a woman who was homeless 3 times in my life, starting as a teenager, it's not easy. I get so upset seeing America giving millions & millions of dollars to aid other countries, & for wars, yet we have homeless & hungry ppl & vets in the US with almost no resources. There are many reasons for being homeless, not all are lazy or are content w living on the street in the snow. Some have health, mental health conditions, addictions, aren't physically able to work, don't make enough money to pay rent then lose their job because they can't shower or only have enough clothes they can carry. I'm stable now & have been for a long time, but I don't take anything for granted, because you never know if it will happen again. When I see ppl asking for help, I may not give them money, bur if they're hungry I'll buy them food, or buy something they need so long as I have paid my bills, I don't care. It's not like you can take anything w you When it's your time to pass on.

Well depending on the crime…Part of the deal is she had to pay him back, luckily she hadnt gotten to spending the bulk of it and except having to borrow a few thousand from family members, she paid it all back quickly.

The thief broke into the tea shop and once they alarm stopped going off they chipped their way through a concert wall in the bathroom of the tea shop which was directly adjacent to the Apple store vault. Inside the vault didn't have the security that would alert them so they loaded up everything and out they went back out through the tea shop.

I guess my remembering was slightly off - it was a coffee machine store, not a tea shop, and the wall was not concrete so was cut through. They got 432 iPhones and an unspecified number of other electronics. Google "Alderwood apple store burglary" and they have some fun photos. Even the shop used as a conduit was shocked because they didn't realize how close they were to the Apple store. Police said it was an incredibly well organized theft and I don't think any arrests were made

I worked at a golf course years ago. A coworker/friend and I were blamed for stealing over $60,000. Our manager was the one who told the General Manager and owner it was us. They took us into a back room and basically believed it was us. We were humiliated, brought to tears, and so angry because we would never steal a penny. Turns out, our manager who blamed us was the guilty party. It sucked so bad! The feeling of being accused made us feel like absolute shit. Especially because we were honest, hard workers. She actually got fired but never had to pay it back!!! Still not sure how she got out if that one. 😕

I live in a rural county. My friend from highschool discovered an enormous amount of people, mostly 16-20 years old. The other half of the statistics were veterans. We went out and learned to spot them. I had no problem going up and asking them questions. Our intention was to start a shelter. In less than 2 years, we had discovered there were up to 5-10% homeless people in our county! I live in the largest town and our population is only 15,000 people. We discovered teens in need, having been thrown out of their homes, and vets unable to find employment. It's sad, but it only took a bit over 2 years to get the information, file the 501c3 papers and find a suitable location. I'm so proud of my friends who originally discovered this problem, and acted. I was just a small part of the solution. I don't understand why people throw their children out like trash, or why vets can't get employment. ❤😢

I have mixed feelings about the first incident at Walmart. Firstly, Walmart has drastically impacted millions of jobs and small towns worldwide, draining the money that would typically be reinvested locally. This has led to the devastation of small towns and left main streets across the nation barren and desolate, while the Walton family remains among the world's wealthiest. Moreover, the wages paid to Walmart employees are so low that many qualify for federal food assistance. Essentially, the Walton family's fortune is indirectly subsidized by taxpayers. If Walmart were required to pay a living wage, their profits might not be as high, since a significant portion of their workers' wages is currently funded by taxpayers. This raises the question: Who is the real criminal?

Fighting evil with evil never results in good. Violent criminal conduct is not a productive way of resisting a corporation's tyranny, there is no excuse for unruly activity or disorderly conduct over something as petty as shoplifting. Neither Walmart nor the criminal are justified in the way they conduct themselves so believing either are absolved is quite frankly lunacy.

Several times I've told people I'll buy food and make up like a nice lunch and they're gone when I leave the store because it wasn't about food like they said. Had one fellow crying about his kids needing food. Gave him 8 bucks, went to the bank then liquor store and he was waiting in line with 3 single beers. I chewed him out so bad in the store. Other times I'll give some cash and just let them do what they want.

I am middle-upper class economically now, but I have been homeless and been part of homeless communities a few times. There are dozens of reasons why some people can't access those services. Just because one lady lied to you, it doesn't mean everyone is. That was very kind of that officer to buy the hat and gloves. What I will also add is that there are a lot of places you can get help with that for free. Not sure where she is, but here in Seattle, there are churches, charities, day centers (places like Urban Reststop, which provides showers, bathrooms, food, and other things to unhoused folks), as well as mutual aid groups, etc. that can help. This is the case in many big cities, and even a lot of small towns. Shelter is harder to come by, but food and clothes can be gotten without resorting to theft.

Definitely. And people don't need to steal food for their children in the US as long as they are willing to follow the rules of the welfare programs. @detritusofseattle
@detritusofseattle 9 ай бұрын
@@shethingsd Well, having worked in those welfare programs and having been on them myself as a child, I can tell you that things aren't that simple. Food stamps doesn't give a lot, and it hasn't increased enough to keep up with current food prices. Even at max benefits, when I was doing it a few years ago, it was 200 or so for a single person, but each extra person above that didn't increase the budget by 200. It increased it by very little. And since your actual allotment is based on your income vs allowances for expenses you might have- which doesn't include things like car payments and doesn't actually give you a dollar for dollar deduction- you may not get the max benefits, meaning you get less help, despite perhaps needing more. SNAP does help a lot, yes, but it's not enough to live on. TANF is even worse. It's a lot less, a lot more restrictive, and harder to get. However, having SNAP does also get you some additional benefits. For example, a lot of public transit systems will give discounts to people on SNAP. There are also some food banks that won't give you a food box unless you're on SNAP. There's also certain other supportive services that come with it. I could see a family running out of food at home near the end of the month and the mother deciding to steal some food they need to get by for a few days, especially if they are unaware of some of the other resources available. This is why I think that the response to shoplifting calls when it involves food or other basic needs, especially with a first time offender, should be to send them to those resources and make sure they know how to utilize them. If they continue after that, it's a different story. I could also maybe see a homeless person doing this too, as food stamps goes even less far if you're on the streets since you can't cook your own meals. I remember my time being homeless, and I definitely didn't have a fridge, stovetop, oven, etc. in my backpack to store raw foods in order to cook them. As a result, my only option were things that either A. didn't require refrigeration and could be eaten without cooking, or B. prepared foods that didn't require a microwave. That costs more money. In Tucson, when I was homeless there, I didn't know about resources, so when I didn't have any money, I actually got food out of trash cans. Got really lucky one day as someone had thrown away almost an entire pizza, and it was actually still relatively warm. But I was not so lucky other times and went hungry. I was on the University of Arizona campus, and I made sure to try to keep up my hygiene as best I could so as not to be seen as homeless. I imagine if I had been more clearly in need or had asked for help, I might have gotten it. The one time I had someone ask me about my housing I lied because I was afraid I could get kicked off the campus, which was the only safe place I knew of to go. In Seattle, people are very generous. When I was street homeless here for a short time, I actually had to reject offers of food because I had gotten so much. I had a guy literally run across the street and just give me 50 bucks one time. I didn't know about day centers back then, but I'm sure I would have found out eventually had my time out on the street been longer. During my time being hungry at the University I did briefly consider theft, but I decided against it. I reasoned that it wasn't worth the risk, that if I were to steal food from one of the stores or something, I'd probably get caught, and that could risk my future career. I might have done it eventually if I got desperate enough, but I held out, and I got the help I needed most at the time. I understand why some people don't hold out and do resort to theft, and I have genuine sympathy for them. But sympathy isn't just a blank check to do what you want. Sympathy without accountability is not kindness. Accountability doesn't mean lock someone up every time and be harsh. Sometimes it means not allowing people to steal, but directing them towards the proper resources so that stealing is no longer seen as necessary. If they refuse that help and keep stealing, then there needs to be consequences.

Taking her home would be too big a risk - for both of them. She could not be assured that he was not simply trying to get her out of sight and in a controllable location to criminally assault her. He could not be assured that she would not allege that an assault happened, seeking compensation. Far far better to stay in public and buy the meal from a street vendor/take away store.

I was homeless for a few years and one day I had been sitting by a shop with a sign, I was there easily 8/9 hours and not a single person even acknowledged me, no hello, no smile, nothing. Then around 8pm I watched this group of teenager go by and as they passed one girl ran back and gave me like 83 cents and apologised saying that was all she had, and I almost started crying because she was the first person to say a single word to me in so long, I was legitimately starting to think I was going crazy and had turned invisible or something. About half an hour later I went around the corner to go use the bathroom at McDonald’s and as I was walking in that same girl was walking out with her friends, she saw me and asked if I was the homeless woman from earlier, I said yeah and thanked her again and she handed me a bag of food she had gotten to bring over to where I’d been sitting, then I really did start crying. You never know when something small will make a difference, that girl was maybe 15-16 and I’ll never forget her. I wish I could have told her parents how kind she was to me, plus to do all that in front of her friends and risk getting teased.

I believe technically that last one was embezzling rather than shoplifting, but that's on Dr. Insanity and CLR was outstanding as always. "Nothing that happens in Walmart is worth that level of escalation." Even worse is when it's Dollar General. There was a case from a few years back where a woman and three teenage accomplices (some or all of which were her kids IIRC) stole from a DG and then ran from the cops. It went out over the air as an armed robbery, so they didn't just let it go. She was going 126 when one of them PITed her. She was killed in the ensuing crash and one of the teenagers was badly hurt. Tragic.

Mr. Rivers you have big-time dad energy. I'm so glad I found your channel. It's refreshing to watch an entertainer who delivers a positive message about what humanity should be. My mom can be really hard hearted at times and she always cautioned me against helping certain people in certain ways ("don't give homeless people money cause they'll just use it on drugs, give them food instead" or "you have to look at their shoes and fingernails to tell if they're *really* homeless or just scamming you"). But that shit's exhausting. So I decided that if I see someone who is asking for help, and I have the means to help them in the moment, I'll do it. If someone isn't really in need and they're just trying to pull one over on me or whatever, I think that says something about their character rather than mine. I'd rather be occasionally taken advantage of by someone who doesn't really need my money than refuse to help someone genuinely in need just because they were given a new pair of shoes, or they took the time to indulge in cleaning under their fingernails, or whatever made them look a little better off that day.

They also had to tell people their income was $5 over the limit for help as they were sitting there with an infant and a toddler and no diapers. @@ChillAssTurtle Well I'm a bit more sympathetic to people if they're stealing because things like rent, medical and car payments/insurance eat like 90% of everyone's hard earned money. I guess you can't really steal a few months of car insurance or rent, but you can steal a few pounds of ground beef.

They usually leave the torn empty packaging shoved in the back of the shelves because just stealing without making a mess isn't good enough I guess.

@@unarmored9973ya this makes sense. On top of ppl stealing out of need bc they’re legit poor or very low income, there’s been self checkout for a while now. It’s very common for people to just mark this $25 item as a $6 item etc. Maybe it’s $50, whatever. That all adds up. Sometimes that person just does that a couple times a year, others do it every single time. Some ppl who do it need to save the $ and say hey it’s a bajillion dollar corporation, what’s x$ to them? Others do it out of thrill or they’re a klepto or whatever. Then you have actual thieves who are stealing a ton of $ bc they are good at it, and/or the store isn’t very diligent about security, so they just pile up stuff. That is probably a lot less common than the other cases. Then I’m sure there’s things I’m not thinking of where ppl steal. But my point was, the “small stuff” adds up fast. There are so many locations, so many ppl shop there in a year so many times. I’m not exactly crying for Walmart or x big corporation that usually underpays employees and their CEOs etc. wipe their a** with 100’s, but it’s extremely unfortunate it’d become such a big problem that they have to go to such lengths. I mostly feel for the smaller places that can’t afford it, go out of business bc of it. It’s unfortunate, but I def believe you. Don’t even have to bother checking bc I’m sure it’s an extremely high number similar to what you said. Where there’s stuff to steal it’ll be stolen, where there are laws to break they’ll be broken. I just wonder how much of this stems from the war on drugs/addiction. Directly/indirectly it’s messed up the very core of society and the consequences are everywhere. Gotta be so many ppl shoplifting to support habits etc. I wish there was a reasonable solution, bc what we do now isn’t fixing anything. Didn’t start writing this thinking about that topic at all, apologize for getting a little preachy or whatever.

That’s when she pulls out tools, pens, fucking glitter, all kinds of odd shit and says, “oh? I really hope you don’t think I was trying to steal this stuff?” I said, “well, you’re in your car and I’ve just paid you for the day, so I just wanted to make sure there weren’t any problems with you driving home.” She then started crying. I wish he would’ve gotten some help if that’s the case instead of nothing happening, but whatever. Him acting like that while carrying stuff? He’s gonna get popped eventually, dude got lucky AF for w/e reason this time. We don’t know what happened as to why stuff got dropped. Maybe the cop was dirty or did something very improper off camera. Maybe the cop didn’t show up to court or something crazy happened. Maybe there was some kinda deal and they snitched on someone man. You really just never know. If you can find more info on the case lemme know! With regards to the shop lifter idk wtf he was doing. But shop lifting a small amount again that’s not some big charge. It’s would’ve been charged as something higher if it was over a certain $ amount of stuff I believe…I’m not a lawyer. I don’t think it was said to be a felony bc it was xxxx$ or w/e like that lady who got 7y for being a total dope and running etc. Listen obviously both of the guys were out of line, and frankly not smart. It’s true that a lot of shop lifters get away with it…but this was more. They caught a dude w drugs on him as well. This isn’t some case where they simply didn’t arrest a shoplifter bc it’s not worth it, or they’re being lenient, or whatever. So clearly something happened we don’t know about. Relax. And the employees know if they get caught stealing their hands will be chopped off. It was a lifetime of savings. I got fired but never charged or had the police involved. It completely humbled me and I never had the thought of ever stealing again. I hope everyone who steals, even minor things, gets caught to have the same exact experience. Even getting called out for it really is a reawakening, makes you realize it's not worth it at all. Local to me: someone that I knew and who went to my church worked for a small rural school (k-12 on one campus). This school didn’t have any money for improvements, curriculum, additional teachers, or anything else. Turns out, this chick was buying stuff for herself and her family on the school credit line, or making payments to herself that she hid in other staff members’ pay stubs, and did a ton of other shady crap. She bought things like boats, a vacation home, and (my favorite) matching monogrammed camouflage robes for the whole family. She walked around like she was better than everyone else because she was from a well known family and had so much stuff. Since she got herself arrested, the school has been able to update the football field and marquee, and make other improvements to the grounds, hire new teachers, and get themselves together. Organizations should never trust anyone; no matter who they are.
