Hey Andrew, would you consider doing a bit of disco house sometime in the future? It’s a bit tricky as there’s always quite a bit of vocals there and intros can be shorter too. Would love to see you jam to some of those tunes. I’m sure you’d crush it, but would be fun to see you go at it

I'd say the number one piece of advice is know your tunes. In fact I think every dj owes this much to their audience above all else. If you're playing across different genres transitioning can be a real challenge and knowing the structure of every track inside out allows you to pick out potential mixing points in your mind well in advance. No cue points, key matching, waveform or any other prep needed, just select the winners, don't overthink it and bang em out. Have to say also, in my day double drop meant something slightly different. Cheers, Al (Susie's worse half)

DJs that work out sets are oblivious to what it takes to make a good dj. Reading the crowd and feeling their energy and picking the right song for that exact moment.

not sure how long you've been in the game but this is what djing was pre all the fancy stuff you new your tunes and you could mix them in in multiple places sometimes creating something unique in the moment. this should be the basics of anyone starting out...there seems to be too much formulaic mixing when it should be done with your ears and the feel it.

Yeah bro I've been having this issue, I make mixes for a local radio station every other week and I want to use new stuff every time so I'm downloading stuff in the week days, listening to them few times and then using them. This keeps things fresh and exciting for me but it's definitely gone a bit wrong on numerous occasions. Not that much beatmatching wise just the timings and stuff. Vocal overlaps.. upbeat high energy snares kicking in at full volume a part I really shouldn't have them that loud. Playing intro outro keeps this kinda safe but that will make a boring mix. Just dropping the energy. It's fun still but I've been in trouble few times running out of time, recording them on the day they air and then having these mistakes and canceling recording around 45min in it.. can be demotivating for sure!

Huge thankyou for this! I’ve hardly touched my gear in the last few months because of covid. Feeling somewhat guilty because I didn’t want to put the effort into cue points when I hadn’t got a clue when the next gig would be. But my love has been the fun of mixing new stuff on the fly, chasing the next record before the current one loses interest, then working out how to make them work together through the eq and Fx/looping. Sometimes multi decking. But the message coming through from other channels was cue up… or fail. This has reinispired me that there is a valid reason to do this and it’s fine! Thank you!

Started mixing like a month ago but I just love mixing and dancing so I basically do everything on the fly but instead of just mixing it, I'm setting the cue points of the next song mid set by looking at the waveform and just kind of shoving one 32ish beats where I think it'll work lol. Good video, this was a good explanation of what I do and how to actually start thinking about it rather than my throwing a dart at the board lol.

I would love to see you do a video touching on being prepared for gigs by way of expecting the unexpected with equipment. Obviously, majority of clubs use pioneer gear and is most often CDJ2000/2000NXS but on more than one occasion over the last few years, i've turned up to gigs only to find more obscure equipment. Everything from other brand decks to just very old equipment such as CDJ350s and all sorts of random mixers. Making sure they are prepared that the equipment they're playing on (especially if only playing a small bar/pub) may not be the industry standard gear they've been prepping for gigs with.

I think the trick to mixing unprepared is always having a fail safe. So if you’re struggling to mix out of a song, u can always use an effect to fade into a popular tune. That way u can get the energy back up f the set was getting a bit dead. What I also do is use a playlist I’m familiar with and listen to casually, for example I love dnb so I just listen to my playlist all the time and think of what would mix well, then when I’m on the decks, although I don’t have a plan, I still just know what mixes well and can just naturally flow between tracks.

As a bedroom DJ who also does unprepared sets, I never start with the first beat. While you main track is playing you have time to find a drop in the incoming track, set a hot cue, go back 16 bars and set another hot cue. Maybe set some more further out if applicable. 16 bars after a drop on main track, start mixing in new track over 16 bars. Works on most modern house and electro tracks. Can get boring fast if you just do that. But it work and is simple.

Great thoughts and direction. Doing mixes on the fly needs some structural - definitely key your tracks and denote if they are start / mid or Peak. It’s straightforward- but having a dj set as a performance/story is much more rewarding. Ala Sasha San Francisco 💕

Phenomenal set as always Andrew. Especially loved that its to my favorite genre right now. You always give me new songs to download lol. When it comes to practicing I do cue point prep first then stream on twitch to practice live but without a planned track list. I find it lets me get to know the songs and organically discover tracks that work well together. When i try something in a mix and find it works really well or find that i should add or move certain cues i take notes right then so that i can make the changes later. Keep being inspiring! The kamikaze approach can work sometimes and you can create some amazing sounds... But here's the down side... Trying to replicate the same sound.... I. E I'm all hype kamikaze the bomb... And I'm not remembering where I did the mix or bass swop... If I applied a different fx... Of if the song was played in a different key to match the tack before the bomb part. But I suppose if you having fun you'll keep coming back and trying when things go wrong.

Hey Andrew, how did you know by 22:06 that this is the exact Point, where you have to start your next song that they run perfect together from timing? Is there a "Bar left till drop" option i dont see or can you count them somehow? i dont get it..Or is it just skill? Big thanks for your time, passion and hard work mate.. Much love from Germany.
