I went out yesterday to give this style a go and I must say it takes away the busy feeling. I normally rev match upon down shift but my bike has a slipped clutch so I tried it this way. It felt way more stable and being able to keep the rear tire planted more under braking is pretty awesome.

My rear tire never lost traction on corner entry, because I feed out the clutch gently and not drop it. Blipping works also, but like I said in the description there are multiple ways to downshift. I have never been able to coordinate my blips without adding extra pressure to the front brake. For me it works great. For Jason Pridmore it works great. For Reg Pridmore it works great. Both blipping and not blipping are OK, they both accomplish the same things.

This helped me finally learn what I was doing wrong.. when I would down shift, I dropped the clutch like I usually see riders doing it in videos, but never knew the 1st gear was so sensitive to high engine speed. I would drop to 3rd and 2nd gear fine, but then when I tried to drop to 1st it sounded like the world was ending, but thanks for that note, new thing learned :)
@Trojan02012 жыл бұрын
Yes. That is it exactly. This allows me to modulate my entry speed in conjunction with the brake and also to feel the rear tire. I'm glad you picked up on that. This video is not really about upshifting without the clutch, but the conversation seems to have evolved into that. What you picked up on was the essence of this clip.
@Trojan02012 жыл бұрын
Sometimes that's all it takes is to just try the technique. The school I teach for, all we ask is that you try it. Most times it works for riders, sometimes it doesn't and they don't like how it feels. There are a ton of ways to ride a motorcycle fast, we are not so arrogant to say that this way is the only way. It's just another solid way to do something that is very complicated for many riders. Keep working at it. Get your downshifts done early, as soon as you roll off, click a downshift.
@Trojan02012 жыл бұрын
What we should come away with here is that we need to get our downshifts done early, while the RPMs are still up not allowing the RPMs to drop. The management of the clutch going into the corner helps keep control of the rear wheel. The last thing we want to do is bang downshifts as we are mid corner or allow the revs to drop. Motorcycles like to be high in the rev range. It's where the control is.

Having your braking done early is great. (For me I get my shifting done early) You have modulated your entry speed BEFORE you turn in. What I am able to do is modulate my entry speed all the way up to the apex using the clutch and brake. I cannot get on the gas until I have passed the apex and begin to see my exit and stand the bike up.

Happy to hear that. Really glad in fact. It's responses like yours that spur me on to teach and continue to do so.

I am no expert but I have learned from a few. As I said, it is perfectly fine, and advised, to upshift w/o using the clutch. I've always been told that if you downshift w/o the clutch that you are doing harm to your engine. Either let the clutch out slowly if you don't have a slipper type clutch or give the engine a small rev while the clutch is in to match the engine speed. This takes finesse. I am personally one that lets the clutch out slowly. My new bike has a slipper clutch and it is great!

Air shifts work by using a compressed air storage cylinder and a button controlled air valve applies air pressure to carefully measured lengths of airline. 1 A pneumatic cylinder attached to the gear lever and 2 via a "T" fitting that same air to an ignition cutoff switch. This allows the Shift cylinder to pre-load the shift lever and then the ignition cuts off very briefly unloading the gearbox input and effecting the change. Everything that a road rider does manually but much faster.
@Trojan02012 жыл бұрын
I'm holding the clutch in the friction zone as I'm braking and tipping the bike. I'm controlling the rear wheel and my speed. Once I have found the correct entry speed into the corner then the clutch is released fully and then into maintenance throttle and back on the gas as I exit the corner.

@BMXBOBO you can upshift without the clutch because when you briefly roll off the throttle, it unloads the transmission and you can seamlessly snick into the next gear. It causes no harm to the transmission when done correctly.

More difficult on the clutch plates than the transmission. But, I race on a single clutch pack a year, check it halfway through the season and it is still fine for the full season. Sometimes they can get too hot and warp the steels. But that is just general maintainence. Gearbox has been fine.
@Trojan02013 жыл бұрын
@theHansinator clutchless upshifts done correctly do not harm the transmission. In fact, when it comes to the clutch, it's easier on the plates to perform clutchless upshifts when you are at full throttle. I cannot do an upshift fast enough to use the lever to then have the clutch catch up with the wheels/motor/transmission. THAT will harm a clutch. I owned this bike for 5 years and never needed to replace the clutch. It was always within spec.

If it works for you and he speaks to your motorcycling sensibilities then I'm all for it. Enjoy. No ONE else teaches the techniques that he teaches. The smooth release of the last downshift will allow you to modulate your corner entry, feel the limits of traction. If you just dumped the clutch on your last downshift then the rear will tend to lose traction. Leaned over and ur down

Synchro-mesh and Constant Mesh Sequential's are two completely different types of gearboxes yes. A synchro-mesh generally uses a brass cup which mates with cone on the gear to assist in the two coming to the same speed so the locking collar can engage - this of course depends on the internal construction of the gearbox too. Most modern Sport bikes are a Constant Mesh Dog engaged Sequential. some run a soft slip ring to help match speeds of the dogs to the holes they engage into remember.
@Trojan02012 жыл бұрын
Not at all. The important thing to remember is to feed out clutch slowly after the final downshift. If you let go of the clutch quick it will cause the rear to search for traction and can become a handfull especially big twins. I raced SV650 and used that engine braking to my advantage, but I also had an RC8 and found the big twin to be just as easy. But you are correct, it is hard to do a coordinated blip.
@shortround6312 жыл бұрын
You have a new gsx-r, so it doesn't need clutch for upshifting. Just let off the throttle for a split-second and click up into the next gear. You'll find it quicker and smoother than using your clutch. For folks who think this wears out the transmission, I've had my bike for 8 years now and I never pull in the clutch on upshifts, including track day. My transmission is still as smooth as day one. Good luck Shiny, I think you'll enjoy your rides a little more with quicker shifts.

on another note, if you want to back the bike in to a corner then this is how you do it, just kick down the gears and use the clutch to modulate the brake force to the rear wheel

@111seeit What? Upshifting and downshifting is handled with the left foot. The right food controls the rear brake. The left hand controls the clutch. The right hand controls the front brake. The right hand (by twisting) controls the throttle.

@kickblake In my country, if you want to ride biger bikes then 50cc you have to go to a course and take a exam. I was talking about license to drive a bike. There the instuctor always tells you to shift gears using the clutch if you want to keep your gearbox and clutch in good condition. Also they tell you to always use the kill switch on the bike so you get to know where its located in case of a emergency.
@Trojan02015 жыл бұрын
Good question. When riding around a parking lot it is very important. But, I'm still letting it out slowly around the track, especially the last shift in each sequence. I do not just let go. In fact I'm holding it in the friction zone all the way to the apex in most areas. This allow for much more control. Go to the 5:05 mark and watch the subsequent 3 downshifts. The first 2 are very quick, the third one is held to modulate my entry speed as I'm still braking. Does that help?
@Trojan02013 жыл бұрын
@shalukuttan letting the clutch out slow on the last downshift allows you to stay in control. If we were to just drop the clutch, we can't manage the rear wheel as it tries to match engine speed. Even with slipper clutches we should try to control the rear wheel with our left hand. Also, think about if you are leaned over and need to make a downshift. Be smooth with the clutch.

Just pulling in the clutch and having the RPMs drop to zero should not have a weird engine noise. But to answer your first question the object is to know your gear and know your RPMs at all times in all conditions. A bike likes higher RPMs it works better in the higher RPM range. So in 5th gear and I want to click to 4th gear, I would just begin to roll off and simultaneously pull in the clutch and drop the one gear shift and gently release the clutch. The object is to not lose your RPMs.
@93yota93lude14 жыл бұрын
yes when you blip the gas a little to down shift basically all you are doing is matching the higher RPM for the lower gear. if you down shift an no gas and let the clutch out it will almost feel like you apply the break and what that is doing is the gears are turning the motor to a higher RPM when you down shift and when you get good at it you will know how much to blip the throttle to match the RPM of the lower gear
@Trojan02012 жыл бұрын
If the rider is new, then maybe. However, as riders are advancing then it is not confusing at all and actually much simpler than blipping. Thanks for your view. Continue to do what you know best.

Correct, I do not blip the throttle on downshifts. On the street, at slower speeds, I will use the clutch on downshifts. There are many ways to do the same thing and if some prefer to shift with the clutch, or not, or blip the throttle on downshifts. It's all good. This is just another way to do something that is very difficult to do when trying to do it all in a short, condensed period of time...some will like it, others not so.

A couple of things I noticed were all 4 finger's on the clutch and no rear brake trailing when buttoning off the throttle in the first couple of corner's, this can effect engine braking and corner balance. There are way too many rider's that just don't understand the internal workings of a dog engaged constant mesh transmission like a modern sport bike and the fact you DON'T absolutely need the clutch to up shift, just a light pre-load on the lever and blip off the throttle change done.
@racerjosh200615 жыл бұрын
whilst racing i blip per downshift. its not a blip as such, you only have to move the throttle a couple of mm! you only have to do it very slightly to get it right. also, the higher the gear your in, the less you need to blip. its like riding a bicycle, once you have done it once, its effortless. it also helps to use all of your engine braking. you will find you will stop a lot quicker in a lot shorter distance with the same amount of brake pressure appiled whilst using engine braking.

Sequential gearboxes are fundamentally very different from a conventional Syncromesh gearbox BUT both can be upshifted and downshifted WITHOUT the need for the clutch, the clutch is included to get mobile. Look at Fuller Road Ranger gearboxes in trucks they have a clutch but other than getting moving and for reverse it is seldom used. My bike has some 300000 Km on it over 15 years of riding Mountain Roads and clutch-less changes, next
@Trojan02012 жыл бұрын
I'm not coordinated enough to blip. That's OK. It can be done either way. This clip is showing how to not blip on the downshift. The RPMs are kept high and not allowed to drop off. The very first thing you do is click a downshift. Many people will use the brake, slow, then have to raise the RPMs by blipping. We just turn this on its head and give a rider a much larger safety margin.
@Trojan02013 жыл бұрын
@EugeneF15 What this video is trying to explain is how to pull in and release the clutch. It shows that you do not need to pull the lever all the way in to downshift. It shows how to be smooth with the release of the clutch lever. It helps people understand that the clutch is a very important aspect of riding a motorcycle fast. Many just disregard the clutch and do not perfect control of it. Every time I go out i try to advance my knowledge of the clutch.

that's what everybody is supposed to do even on the road (a must on the track), if you can master the tecnique you wont ruin anything. Just upshift WHILE you leave the throttle and the transmission will want to accept the next gear
@mozzmann11 жыл бұрын
"daniel" A modern Motorcycle gear box is very strong given their size and the use and or abuse they get. Upshifts are no issue as you have seen and if a similar technic is used downshifting rapid and smooth changes can be made, with a light preload of the shift lever a momentary buttoning of the clutch at the same time the throttle is bliped. , Road riding is very different of course because time is not the enemy.

Supposed to do ? not all all. There is clutch it's designed to switch gears and not only for the first one. Using a gearbox like that is not a good idea and will wear it. It's way more stress on the parts On robotized gearboxes the synchronization is perfect,clutch is used and the ignition is shut off long enough to minimize stress on parts.
@Biscuitto12 жыл бұрын
Ok, I've never ridden motorbikes so thanks for sharing your experience. The only thing I can relate to is the 4 fingers on clutch thing, but with brakes on bicycles. People tend to think you can get more modulation with a single finger, therefore more control. So I get why that rule can be transferred to clutch control. But perhaps his handlebar doesn't allow that kind of adjustment for him to move the lever in enough for it to be comfortable to use on finger? Cant argue about other stuff tho
@Trojan02013 жыл бұрын

@ecookman You can clutchless upshift going any speed without any bad effects to your bike's internals if you perform it properly. On many bikes, clutchless upshifts are the easiest to perform smoothly when the bike is nearing, at, or slightly past the peak in its powerband. Clutchless upshifts are neither better nor worse on your transmission than using the clutch. The ONLY thing your transmission cares about is that you momentarily unload (roll-off throttle/quickshifter) before shifting up.
@Trojan02012 жыл бұрын
I like your allusion to Vick to make your point. Pretty funny, however most people don't even know what dogs are on a motorcycle. But not true about the transmission. It's fine and always will be.

You just have to find the right RPM, let off the accelerator and flick it up. Alternatively, you could get a quick shifter which means you change gear and it does everything for you.

@BlackFlag94 it's always going to be difficult to go into 1st gear no matter what bike you are riding, unless first gear is really tall, or you have the ability to change your gearbox for specific tracks. That's the why you have to be diligent with the left hand and not just drop the clutch on release. FYI, I can't blip either, so I don't. What you see in the video is all I'm doing. I'm not blipping, just squeezing the brake.

I know of a Lamborghini and Maclarin box that is configured that way but for the life of me I cannot remember what model, I'll find it. @opmike34312 жыл бұрын
@isawyouinthedark Shifting without the clutch will "work" shifting up or down the gears. To upshift without the clutch, you have to momentarily roll off the throttle. To shift down without the clutch, you have to momentarily roll ON some throttle. However, clutchless downshifts have limited utility and are much easier to get wrong.

Slipping the clutch technique, yess?? I wanna you ask about your clutch play setting, how do you set the friction zone, is it: You set it so that when you grab comfortably with all four finger, it got little play then friction zone, or no play (when you comfortably grab the lever with all four finger)
@Trojan0204 жыл бұрын
Gamas Lazuardi clutch play has more to do the the clutch plates. How new or old they are. You can adjust for the reach at the lever, but play is internal and depends on wear. Hope that helps

The people who are ruining their transmissions must be doing it wrong. There is a technique, but when done correctly, it is seamless. A quickshifter does exactly the same thing that I'm doing manually. Pro's do it because it's fast and actually easier on the clutch and transmission. Using the clutch under power, the plates have to engage with huge loads on them and then release. It can cause premature wear on the clutch plates.
@odyssey7912 жыл бұрын
Good answer..with what I said and your rebuttal just proves that there is no one way to ride a bike fast, releasing the clutch slowly and worrying about traction tellls me you leaning it in with clutch stil partially on.my braking is done before the steer so that by apex I'm already powering thru. I Feel the need to regulate traction and lean only when late braking in the turn to pass someone. Just too many variables and scenarios,.

That's a reliable engine ! Yes the synthetic oil help for sure,but 300 000 is really huge. I agree about shear stability. However i can use auto engine oil in my bike because the gearbox/ dry clutch are separated from the engine,and it redline at 8000 rpm. i just have a counter shaft with straight cut gears but no load on it. Do you extend the oil changes a bit because it's a synthetic or you follow strict mileage or time periods ?

@BlackFlag94 it becomes a feel thing. It's not like you need to rev it to the moon, but it's usually about 500-1000rpm for you blippers. I generally dont blip, only in very tricky situations. Most normal downshifts that I do are without blipping.

@Trojan020 I am not saying that it will break your transmision imediantly. I am saying that if you always do it that way you will break your transmision very fast. I had a Suzuki GSXR 750 from 92 and never done anything for the transmision for 10 years by using the clutch for changing the gear up or down. Ask any one that rides bike for at least 2 years and they will tell you to ALWAYS use the clutch for changing gear. Take the course for a driver license and they will say the same.

@livbuchanan07 I know some racers that do that, but the answer depends. What if you are riding on the street and must emergency stop? Brake, pull in the clutch, downshift to first and come to a stop. So yes, you can do that. But what if you want to go from 6th gear to 3rd. Yes you can pull in the clutch and get into 3rd and then let the clutch out. You cant just let go of clutch and you are not going to know that it is in the right gear. It is not a good technique. It's sloppy.

Chain and Sprockets regularly replaced, both wheel bearings once, a Carb kit plus the normal stuff like Air filter, Coolant and Engine Oil. ....and to continue. Think of how the power band and the torque curve. As the HP builds the torque builds, but at some point the torque peaks and then begins to fall even as the HP is increasing. If I keep my RPMs at or above the peak torque and I really get on the gas the torque will be going down and it will be much easier to control a slide as you exit a corner. Where new riders get in trouble is whacking the throttle with low RPMs and now torque is building and not falling.It shoots them off

Actually, if you use your clutch while downshifting you can have more control. It is a better engine brake and a slipper clutch, though your clutch takes more punishment. And in the end you always have brakes too. Check this vid of how this guy does it: (Corey Alexander Lap of Road America)

@DINGOS30 the shifter, your left foot, has to be moved to select the next higher gear in timing with the quick roll-off of the throttle.

Funny how the gearbox in my 2012 Yamaha R1 race bike is still in perfect condition after a full season of racing. And all clutchless upshifts :-)

@Turkish42 sure, but I think the 50cc bikes like the little Honda dirtbikes are automatics, where there is no clutch, just a shifter.

@HALILYILMAZ2010 No. you just roll off throttle briefly and simultaneously move the shift lever with your foot. It will move into the next gear effortlessly. If you read thru the other comments I have explained in more detail somewhere else in here. It's very easy to do and it is easy on your clutch and transmission when done right. Try it!

Only the shifts leading up to the last one I need to make. So the if I need to move 2 gears down from 6 to 4, the first one is very fast and the second one is slow and deliberate release. I need to make sure that I feed in the clutch and not just drop it. That could lead to disaster, especially if the bike is leaned over. As deliberate as you are with trailing the brake, you need to be so with the clutch.

You do not have to use the clutch on upshifts. When I am on the street, I will use the clutch on upshifts, because I'm just not going fast enough to warrant the clutchless upshifts. When riding fast it is actually easier on the transmission and clutch pack. Every time you pull in the clutch while accellerating the clutch plates have to catch up to the speed of the bike/tire when the clutch re-ingages. Time it right and you can do CLess downshifts as well.
