Oh my gosh. You hit the nail on the head. I laid on my bed ready to zone and treat myself to KZbin. So I watched this and realized you are exactly right! I always feel better when I do a little slow clean up or organize an area! When I lay around a lot I get up and feel like a blob. Why did I not realize this myself! Cass you could be a psychologist! Thank you.

I heard someone say recently, "Slow motion is better than no motion". I swear it is my new motto. I have spent too many years thinking I was failing if I wasn't full of energy and flying around, working. Doing something is better than doing nothing...which is what happens if I feel too overwhelmed.

Yes, Cas, I do this piddle cleaning, but only after your channel made this possible for me. After getting my house under control (decluttering and organizing that fits me...I'm a ladybug). So thank you Cas. I'm 45 and FINALLY have my home in state I can be proud of. If company showed up unexpectedly, I wouldn't be mortified. So thank you Cas.

You have hit the nail on the head here for me. I have been feeling like something is wrong with me cos I don't enjoy sitting down to relax like my husband does. He can sit on his phone for hours and do nothing else. I prefer to putter around, podcast in ear and hang the washing or do some gardening. This video came at a perfect time. I'll continue my recharge method and not feel like I'm doing it wrong since I'm not the same as my husband

Same! You described my husband and I. I’m like, why is it relaxing to walk around working on little things in the evening when my little ones are all asleep?! Shouldn’t I want to sit and do nothing after chasing 3 kids 5 and under? But nope. And my husband looks at me like I’m bonkers

I reeeeally appreciate you touching on this subject. I used to feel guilty about tinkering when society has made rest a form of not doing anything. I discovered that it’s okay to recharge in this way! Great message for those that feel the pressure when their heart is telling them otherwise.

I’m retired, live alone, have limited myself to only one volunteer commitment and one hobby…art. But still need that budget friendly “recharge”. 2 or 3 times a week I go to a local McDonald’s, take my pocket size sketchbook and spend a couple hours, just drawing whatever I want, have a small sandwich, sometimes visit with some other regulars, in general get out of the house, change of environment, relax with no expectations or to do lists. It’s nothing I couldn’t do at home, but the effect is rejuvenating. Cas this is a good topic, some people think it is frivolous, or criticize fast food nutrition, or whatever, but you nailed it. It is rejuvenating. That’s all matters. Thanks for the validation.

I agree and know exactly what you mean. I find if I add gratitude to tasks it helps too. Being grateful that I have clothes to fold. Grateful that I have windows to clean. Grateful that I have children to feed etc it switches the tasks from mindless to a more mindful, slow, intentional activity. As you said, almost meditative X

Pottering- to occupy oneself in a pleasant way without a definite plan or purpose...example-doing small household tasks in a non-rushed way that brings you joy. Love this! I'm not real sure either, but I'm pretty sure I used to do this as a single woman living alone. Chores never felt overwhelming and I never felt drained the same way I do now. I always assumed it was just the sheer amount of what increased after getting married but now I'm realizing that I completely lost my rhythm and turned it away from a cleaning dance party I did every Sunday and into resentful rage cleaning I did every time it got overwhelming. I'm gonna give different tasks a try ❤ I suspect I enjoy mopping when I take my time. I do know I like the satisfaction of getting a window or mirror perfectly clear and streak free. I wonder what else there is

Putting good happy music getting the negative energie out off my house and bring happy positive energie in because i was focused on feeling good of getting a clean home and doing it dancing and make it fun. I just realise that by watching this. It was not a to do list. It was my recharge ritueel. So i gonne tray to find that again. Because i don't like cleaning but i love a clean house and love sewing and knitting in a organised house❤.

Yes!!! Puttering is the best! Listening while doing that right now. I'm the opposite of ADHD. I am OCD to the 10th power! BUT I am also an introvert, 57 and have Lupus! Talk about a reality check. I really treasure my putter time because I don't feel pressured to finish and if I get ADHD cleaning sydrome😂, it's OK! Progress is progress! Breaks are encouraged and I WANT to do it! I get my wireless ear buds on, put on a podcast and clean away. I adore doing laundry while watching movies! That's my ideal Saturday (ikr, I am a nut): movies, laundry done, meal and shopping lists made, dinner for at least 2 days in the slow cooker. It makes life manageable. My house is never terribly dirty, we always have dinner at least partially done (as well as stuff precooked in the freezer) & I get in am unbelievable amount of steps just going from here to there and always making progress! 🎉

You nailed it. I’ve been acting like a bear. Head for the bed as soon as I come home from work. Last night, I slept 13 hours. I have no zest since my daughter left for college. I hate empty nesting. What’s my purpose? So much to do around the house. No energy. I’m exhausted even though I don’t do anything. But the last 2 days, I have puttered. I cleaned my sink, washed the floor; tonight I cleared through a pile of paper. Would be great to feel like I had a full battery or to feel motivated.

In my case, taking adult ballet & stretch classes 3 days every week help me to feel much more energetic. Housework is ever tedious, boring, dull, mindless, and thankless; people’s brains need more than dusting, vacuuming and laundry to keep them sane. Lying around is not healthy for brain or body - the less the human body moves, the less an individual will enjoy the facility to move, and as we mature; the price for lack of movement escalates quickly and sharply, and can transition over the years to painful disability. One answer is to find a pleasant way to keep moving.

You might like the book “Pottering: A Cure for Modern Life” by Anna McGovern. It's about this exact thing that you are talking about! A very relaxing read. “This little book is both a discussion and practical guide to the pastime of pottering. Author Anna McGovern writes with charm about the joy and practicality of living in the meandering moment, not asking too much of yourself and yet still getting things done in the gentlest of ways. This is the book for people who want to discover productivity at an easier pace, and above all the contentment you achieve when accepting that you can only do what you can do. Pottering is a true ode to slow living and an antidote to the stresses of modern life”

"if we try hard to do a 'resting' activity, we still have to self-regulate in order to achieve that - and sometimes it is self reg that we need a break from" is how Jessica from How To ADHD put it. Yes, i don't feel like I'm in a meditative state, but just letting go of all the "it has to be done x" and "i must not do y" is what does the trick for me. It's not always cleaning, it can be something wilder, but it needs to be something where I can let go of all the (adhd) self regulation.

Another thing that helps me is "Taking a Step in the Action" which is a legal term. Basically, do something small or very small, towards the thing I want to accomplish, however low energy I have. Small preparatory actions every time I pass from that spot. It's amazing how they add up. This is a constant help, however imperfectly I take those steps.
