T50 Tear Down and Inspection (Part1)

Safety glasses on before approaching press, proceeds to 'Don't be like me' and encourage us to set up our presses properly. Reminds us to wear safety glasses seemingly as an afterthought before continuing with the counter-indicated use of the press. This is the perfect representation of a well experienced ASE tech in the field. PPE tied to activity so well he has to remind himself to encourage us to use it as well. Knows what works in a pinch.

Thanks for the well written response. Yes, Ive seen plenty of stuff literally explode on the press and I have to remind new people in the shop "stuff on the press doesnt bend it SHATTERS." On high pressure operations I will even use a full face shield (big rusty wheel bearing)

You were talking about the seal bearings in this tear down. Can you tell me why Toyota use the sealed bearings on the axle shaft instead of engineering the housing to accept the oil seal on the back side of the bearing next to the axle flange ? That way the sealed bearings with one side of the seal removed would be lube by the diff lube . Makes sense huh ?

Great video. I think if is ok to change only one gear if damaged and leave the countershaft intact? The gears are sold separately so I think it's ok but still not sure, so can you confirm?

Hey. Awesome video. I have a 81 COROLLA that has a vibration in all gears except 4th. Shifts great, no grinding and down shifts great. I am thinking that it needs bearings but everything else may be ok. Where do I get bearings? Thanks

Hi sir good day! What causes 4th gear to pop out of engagement. I already stretched out the detent springs but that wouldn't work either, it still pops out sometimes.

Worn input shaft or bearing is very common. Worn 3/4 slider

Got a question, I have a t50 for a gts with a stuck driveshaft would taking apart the whole thing help with removing the driveshaft?? Tried different things but can’t get it out

Wow that sounds like a nightmare. Did someone try to force a different spline driveshaft into the trans? (different year T50s have different spline counts). Without looking at the trans, I'd say rust penetrate and slide hammer.

CM Autohaus it’s a t50 with a one piece driveshaft stuck in there. I haven’t tried that yet, oil looked like it had water in so I’ll definitely give that a try

19x5 for 3.9 final drive 21x6 for 4.11 final drive 22x6 for 4.3 final drive (GT and GT APEX)

Older T50s have a smaller OD input and Front counter bearing, but the rest are backwards compatible. Too many differences to list, but obvious indicator is the output spline count is different.

@@collinklein2230 It should if you get the correct clutch disk and driveshaft. Although I recommend the newest version ae86 T50 (T51) as it has all the improvements.

I'm having wine noise in all gear except 4th gear what do you recommend me to replace?

Sound like a worn 4th gear set (Input shaft) or bearings

I'm having the same issue. So replace all the bearings on both shafts? Would that solve this problem? I had one rebuilt a couple years ago and it whines in first second third and fifth. Could it be that I just need to replace the counter shaft bearings. I do have play in the counter shaft bearings. Thank you.

Hey, slick, that is not a T50. T50 case does not split in half and first/reverse are in a separate housing behind the 2,3,4 main case. That looks like a T5.

Not T50 like the Borgwarner T50. T stands for toyota in this one. They just happen to share the same name. This is the 5 speed that went in 75-86 Corollas
