Is it only me who is annoyed by person in front of me in mrt stations or outside keep looking at the phone and blocking me? They walk slower instead of the following the crowd's pace, so it slows me down. I am amazed negatively by people esp ladies watching drama while walking. Myself being a lady.

Another point is looking at the phone when boarding/alighting the bus. My area is crowded with people on bikes that likes to dash thru the bus stop and sometimes they don't even slow down when there's people alighting. If you're not careful or attentive, you might clash with them. I've seen many near miss cases.

First of all I am bewildered by why do people put the responsibility of their life on the mercy of strangers they don't even know. When you are distracted and don't know where you are going, you are essentially calling out , 'Hey, I am ignorant of where I am going, please help me and look out for me'. But Why? For me I dare take responsibility for my precious life and always look in the eye while walking. So many PMDs and Bicycles zooming around, also on their phones haha.
@chengpin89822

Thank you for pointing this out! At the end of the day, everyone needs to know that road safety is EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY!! Not just the drivers!! I am also guilty of looking down at my phone while crossing the road, but I always make it a point to lookout for vehicles first before even stepping out onto the road (I should correct this to not looking at my phone AT ALL while crossing). I've seen WAY TOO MANY people walking, dashing, running, riding across pedestrian crossings without slowing down to lookout for vehicles!! This complacent mentality thinking that drivers will automatically stop for you, but the truth is, we can't see or lookout for you 100% of the time. Sometimes, WE LEGIT DON'T SEE YOU!! Hence, nowadays, i don't even step out onto crossings until i see the vehicle actually slowing down or come to a stop. CUZ YOU NEVER KNOW!!! And those kind of crossings at 3:35 are esp dangerous, because sometimes drivers can overlook these kind of traffic lights!! It happened to me 3-4 times already. Luckily nothing happened.

At 3:36, most drivers look out for pedestrians. Plus pedestrians are familiar with the roads they take daily. So they develop a false sense of safety and it builds into their minds. Just watch the young lady in black at 3:42.

If a person gets into an accident while using their phone (consuming media or playing or communicating) all distracted I just can't find it in my conscience to have pity or mercy for them. It only takes a second to get into an accident and die, whatever they are doing on their phone it won't kill them to lock their phone and put it in their pockets or bag

If you want to prevent collisions, get pedestrians to walk on the right parts of concrete paths, pedestrian-only paths and to stay left, walking in one line so to speak. Not having unintended people on the paths would already reduce risk of collision. Obstructions are also deadly, like leaf litter, water puddles, potholes, sand patches, obstruction of vision, lack of visibility, etc. Even if it doesn't lead to a collision, a person's behaviour can be steered in unpredictable ways that leads to an accident.

Habit needs strong enforcement at the beginning to cultivate. This is where strong message and harsh penalty need to work hand in hand. Education will always be there, but the emphasis on just education should be given at the later stage when people have changed their habit. This was what LKY did during his time on spitting and littering. If our founders were to perceive it as difficult to enforce thus relying on education, I can't imagine what will become of present's day Singapore. It is the same as returning the bowls and plates after eating. We have been educating the public for years but to no avail. With just one law on imposing fine on those who don't return, everything changed. Education to the young generations will be important at this stage to ensure the younger generations continue with the good habit. I do hope the government sectors can have more problem solvers with strong moral courage to turn our nation back to a fine nation. No point talking about education at this stage. Chinese wisdom : "kill one and hundreds will be warned".

Nowadays it's all about the selfish uncultured mentalities of people including foreigners. It's the self entitled mentality that cars "must give way to pedestrians, cyclists if not you bang me lor" that is creating the problems. It's impossible for our country to be as self disciplined and considerate as Japan. During my time in primary school we were taken to this road safety parks to educate us on road manners. 'Look left look right look left again" etc. it felt lame back then but it certainly imparts the information that you are ultimately the one responsible for your own safety. You can behave very safely but you definitely cannot control how others behave. I have seen a young mother cycling across a zebra crossing with speed with her son right behind on another bicycle from a blind spot near Vivo city without even stopping or even slow down to check. What if I hit her AND her son because the son is simply doing what the mother does? There are many pedestrians who always walk slowly even when green man already turn to red. They don't notice it. In town area where there are many filter lanes into building, loads of uncultured people just cross like it's their father's road even where there are no zebra. It's ultimately these rotten mindsets that must warrant some sort of tough fines or penalties else nothing will change. Such as the littering punishment, tray return fines. At first people complain but it does help. Then again it's about enforcement. LTA always play pattern come out with rules but never enforce. They only purposely take photo of cars in bus lanes, go carpark look for ppl never pay parking...etc...all offences that are if no relation to safety. Why don't they enforce on the still existing illegally modified pmds, errant cyclists delivery people who break all sorts of traffic rules?
