My late grandmother got hemorrhagic stroke when she traveled to south africa back in 2008. Thankfully, my auntie bought travel insurance for my grandmother. The insurance covered her medical expenses for 2 months in south africa + medivac back to SG + 1 more month hospital stay in sg + medivac back to Indonesia. She survived liver cancer 6 years later but died 2017 due lung cancer.

If you're engaging in any major physical activity (like skiing), it's a no brainer for travel insurance

So crazy , dare to travel without travel insurance ! Travel insurance is the 3rd item to buy , after booking flights and hotels . The only time I don’t buy travel insurance is when I travel to JB , other parts of Malaysia also must buy .

It’s because of people like her that the Japanese government is implementing compulsory travel insurance for inbound visitors.

Read the FINE PRINT!!! You'll be surprised some incidents insurance do not cover. (1) Arrived back in SG but luggage was delayed for more than 48 hours. Insurance company said if you're on home ground, it's not covered. (2) Most high risk activities (eg skiing) are not covered by basic plan. (3) If you're worried about a certain scenario, call the insurance company and have them explain to you. I was surprised the insurance company do not cover extra expenses to change air ticket to return home early, if you are sick or injured during the trip.

I bought bubblegum insurance by MoneySmart. Cancelled vacation mid-trip due to illness. Once back in singapore, Diagnosis was kidney stone, and they said kidney stone is considered pre-exisiting as it takes more than 6 months to develop. They wanted me to show proof that the person did not have kidney stone before the trip. HaHaHa. What a load of rubbish. Didnt want to argue, but I did ask them if diagnosis was heart attack or cancer, is that pre-exisitng? and need to show proof the person did not suffer from cancer? Never got a reply.

I agree, medical costs of mere first few thousand in a foreign country is considered very low.

I always buy travel insurance whenever I travel overseas. So far, I have not made any claim for a medical emergency. I will still buy cos I am worried if sth bad happens, I will need to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars.

When we buy air ticket using our credit card, it comes with Travel Insurance Coverage. So, I still confuse if we need to separately buy another travel insurance.

@@Coz131 if you are planning to ski, scuba dive or do other high risk activities then you need the appropriate cover. If not, you just have to hope for the best.

CC companies offer SOME coverage when you charge the FULL cost to your CC …. It’s important to read and understand the scope of coverage provided.

Need some help! we’re planning a one time trip for the first time, and might buy flight tickets from expedia so I really wanted to know if we should buy the $45 flight insurance that they are offering for this trip? It would mean a lot to get some help. Thanks

Buy your own one. Usually bundle deals have limited coverage or not so good coverage.
