@@equivalentexchangeisalie5726 The statement carries a degree of truth, and it emphasizes the importance of personal motivation and responsibility in the coaching process. While a life coach can provide guidance, support, and strategies for personal and professional development, the client's commitment and motivation are crucial for achieving meaningful results. A life coach is not a substitute for personal responsibility or the client's active engagement in the process. Successful coaching often involves a collaborative effort where the coach and client work together toward defined goals. The coach can offer insights, accountability, and tools, but the client's willingness to implement changes and stay motivated is fundamental to the coaching relationship. However, it's essential to recognize that everyone's needs and preferences vary. Some individuals benefit significantly from the guidance and accountability a life coach provides, while others may find motivation from within or through other means. The effectiveness of life coaching can depend on factors such as the client-coach relationship, the coach's expertise, and the client's commitment to the process.

I think the draw to life coaches is that they seem more relatable and down to earth. People tend to be drawn to individuals they can relate to. No, they may not have a degree (all though some colleges offer degrees in life coaching now), but they have that person's ear because they aren't using big fancy words to get to the root of the problem. Therapists intimidate a lot of people. And to be honest, book smarts doesn't equal people smarts. Some therapists seem to care more about their title than the people they are charged with helping. I have seen it with 2 of the therapists I have seen and one of the therapists my son with Aspergers has seen. She was more concerned about my son touching her "therapy dog" than his issues. Smh. Life experiences trump a book smart person most days. These people want to talk to someone that they can relate to. Sorry if that bothers a lot of the therapists, but, I have learned a lot more from people who have experience with my problems than I have with the 3 therapists I have met. I felt like I was talking to a person who cared rather than a person who has memorized case studies and theories. And , honestly, some of the wisest people I know don't have a degree. They have life experience. I don't say all of this to downplay someone who went to school and earned their master's. Not at all. But if the human element is missing from your practice, there will be some who will be turned off. We just went through a rough year with this virus. People want a true connection more than ever.

I have never seen a client through a rigid clinical lens. And neither have any of my colleagues. The flaws that you have described from your experiences seem to call back to a time when therapists were very clinical, cold, and lacking humanity. Most therapists today understand that this is not only impractical but potentially harmful. I don't know enough about life coaching to say if it's good or bad. However the lack of governing boards and universal oversight in the field is troubling to say the least. You say that therapists are only in it for the money and status, which is not totally wrong (trust me I've met a few) but I could say the same for life coaches. Ultimately it boils down to the clients choice and what they respond better to. Have a good day

If you want to navigate successful dating if it’s been awhile? If you are looking for someone to help with accountability to go after a goal or dream? If you are recently divorced and looking to create a life that makes you truly happy? None of these things need to dredge up the past or heal traumas. That’s why we have coaches. Yes, a friend would do if they are trained in things like motivation, planning, self reflection and asking the questions that inspire change. Coaches have immense value. Yes there are charlatans, but you’ll find some of those with PhDs as well. How many people do you know that have spent years or decades on a therapists sofa, with no real progress? This is all about coaches coaching wannabe coaches to become coaches who go on to coach other wannabe coaches. It does so much damage. My partner was sucked into a program called Transition Excellence - a 12 week program at a cost of USD 6,500. My partner was promised that this would rocket launch their coaching business. Nothing would be further from the truth. My partner was sucked in an lost USD '000s. My partner, on realizing how much $$$ they had lost ended up trying to take their own life. This so-called "profession" needs regulating and I don't mean form the ICF or other "spineless" organizations. Governments need to clamp down on these "life-coaches" with serious judicial consequences.

At the end of the day, a legitimate life coach has the skills to add value and transform someone’s life above mediocrity. From experience, people who benefit the most from coaching are committed to making a major shift in their life. They refuse to make excuses or settle for mediocrity. People who don’t benefit from coaching don’t trust themselves. Therefore, they don’t trust life coaches and think it’s a scam. This thought process in itself is a limiting belief that often shows up in other areas of someone’s life. If you are looking for a coach, hire someone you get a good feel for, can trust, and can afford. *As hard as it is, try not to assume just because a coach isn’t for you or charges a premium they are a scam. You have to realize every coach isn’t for everyone and everyone isn’t for every coach. There are people with a wide range of reasons for hiring a coach and income.

There are a lot of crappy therapists. People stop trusting therapy when it’s failed them multiple times. In therapy there’s little incentive to actually solve problems or track improvement. It’s often just going through the motions. Getting people on the calendar and talking to them. I’m kind of over it.

I am a 59 year old Life Coach with a varied life experience. I have completed Life coaching training and continues to learn. I have been coaching Pro Bono. Majority of my clients are just looking for someone who has no vested interest in their life, will not judge them, that allows them to talk about their desires in life. By asking them open questions it gives them the ability to open their minds to what is possible or how they can discover their own solutions. I would also be very cautious about seeking out a very young life coach or for instance a very young Financial Planner with no personal experience. One of my concerns about the industry is that it seems to feed on itself.

@Luís Andrade Since when is medicine the only industry that people care about having knowledgeable workers in? Consumers want reliability and accountability. As a result: regulations start to form. Most people would prefer a standardized industry even with some flaws vs. a fully unregulated market where for every 1 quality worker there is 100 scammers and unqualified phony's. You could have no accreditation and be great at guiding people due to life experience, genuine care, understanding etc as you could have full accreditation and be horrible at guiding people as you simply lack the experience, compassion and many other things. The world is not black and white and in reality, every person on this planet has almost something to offer in a coaching scenario... it's just knowing what you have to offer and how much you truly understand/care. You can go the textbook route, but sorry, you will simply be following robotic format in many scenarios! I'm talking from experience and as a therapist or coach, you should never sacrifice who you truly are, just to blend into programs heavily, because ppl have said you must be qualified. You are gonna fall/make mistake and possibly even realise you aren't ready to take on what you think you're ready for but stairing at paper, computers and courses for am amount of years will absolutely never give you what experience will.

I agree "You could have no accreditation and be great at guiding people due to life experience, genuine care, understanding etc as you could have full accreditation and be horrible at guiding people as you simply lack the experience, compassion and many other things" Was so powerful to read! Unfortunately the gateway into coaching is so low that anybody can brand themselves as a Coach, finding the right one for whatever it is you are trying to ascertain from the client coach relationship is crucial!

These life coaches can't even tell you what therapy is... so how can I believe them that they aren't practicing outside of their scope? Therapy isn't just about the past, and it isn't giving advice and problem-solving either. This industry is ripe for people to take advantage of others being so unregulated. And it costs more than traditional therapy, with no education or oversight? If coaches want to be taken seriously, this video was not it.

I think there are more scammers than there are life coaches out there. Like I don't have any life coaches calling me, but I do get scammers. lol If someone (who is mentally sound) wants to find a consultant/life coach, they should be allowed to reach out and be okay to pay up if that person has a skill or quality they want to replicate. People who hire life coaches are usually not struggling with money if they're paying $$$ to talk to someone, which is ultimately what the service is: to talk to someone. Notice how CNBC did not interview anyone that was a victim of some life coach stealing their money? This seems like a non-issue. It's making news out of no news. Like duh, go talk to a therapist if you're depressed or having self-worth issues instead of a life coach. Most people who are going through mental issues aren't going to wake up and go speak to a life coach over therapist. Most people aren't even going to know what a life coach is. lol

Coaching is a skill set that requires some degree of learning to develop. Although credentials may not be a primary consideration for some clients, it's important that coaches have foundational certified skills and a mechanism of accountability. Importantly, because of the potential overlap between coaching and therapy/mental health, it is in the interest of clients & coaches to have minimum regulation and standards.

What people need to understand is. 1. There are good and bad apples in literally EVERY PROFESSION! 2. All opinions are suggestive based on your own bias,, experience, and expectations. It does not make your right or wrong but it can hinder you from seeing thr full picture. 3. Degrees DO NOT determine character! I have multiple degrees, that tells you nothing of my honesty, my amout of care for others, or even my level of ability. Simply says that I am trained to do a thing based on exams, reading, and maybe field practice. But people think degrees dictate character, sincerity, transparency, honesty, and so forth. They don't. The individual does that and in ALL professions there are good ones, bad ones, and a mix in the middle! I've had several friends, associates and relatives who had bad experiences with PhD therapists compared to a handful that have had positive experiences. Everything from being ghosted, the specialist making inappropriate jokes, yelling at the client and one crying through the session so hard they cut it short. All people in those scenarios refused to seek therapy after that. Think they don't question the legitimacy of therapeutic help? Are they right because of that? What about people with bad experiences with doctors, lawyers, cops, teachers, this race or that... does that mean ALL people in those categories are thanwrong, bad, scam artists in the like?? NOPE.
