I worked at a Chevrolet/Buick dealership as a mechanic back in the eighties. One of the things a tech was tasked to do was new car preps. Which of course included Corvettes and back then, the Grand National. I much preferred the Buick over the Corvette. Much more comfortable to drive, and the Grand National was no slouch compared to the Corvette. I figured I'd own one some day but never have.

My dad bought his straight off the car hauler in 86. They tried pushing the on on the lot, but a hauler had just rolled up with a full haul of them. So he picked the one he wanted off of it. His friend was a mechanic at the dealer. One year later he tried telling my dad to buy a GNX. It was one of the last in the country. They wanted 35k for it, but he couldn’t justify buying it at the time, since he had just got his for 17,800. He still has his, but regrets not buying that GNX. I’ve owned an 86 GN, 87 turbo t, and for the last 25 years an 87 GN with 24k miles.

I had a 1985 Buick Park Avenue for awhile - it was absolutely bulletproof. Always started, always ran smooth, never needed anything beyond regular oil changes. The upholstery and foam roof disintegrated , and all the plastic bits and electric window switches, etc., eventually broke, but the engine ran as good the day I sold it as when my dad gave it to me (and he bought it new). FAST and straight were those days GM progressed to making the best full size luxury FAST nimble coupe ever made in the USA. GM took all the imperfections of the last generation and tweaked them out of the last year Riviera 1999 then quit making this marvelous machine that to this day has style. Less than 2000 built after 6 years of searching only 38 found so far? Folks say there are 99 Rivieras everywhere but once asked they can never tell me where exactly? I have 4 Jay Leno has none. For 1998, the 240 hp (180 kW) supercharged V6 became standard. GM's OnStar service was added as an option, along with minor interior design changes. 10,953 units were produced for 1998. With sales of all coupes declining in the North American market, GM decided to discontinue the Riviera. 1999 was the car's last model year with production of 1,956 cars ceasing on November 25, 1998. The final 200 cars had special silver paint and trim, and were denoted "Silver Arrow"[28] models, a designation which hearkened back to several Silver Arrow show cars that had been built off Riviera bodies by Bill Mitchell. Eighth-generation Rivieras received the most powerful V-6 Buick engine since the Grand Nationals of the 1980s. The supercharged OHV V6 gave impressive torque and acceleration, pushing the car from 0 to 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) in under 7 seconds, and turning the 1⁄4 mile in 15.5 seconds. Supercharged Rivieras achieved a fuel efficiency figure of 18/27 (city/highway mpg).

Usually id give a star a pass but when its Jay leno and how many cars he collects and is supposed to be such a big car guy. The waste gate will make noise if its an open pipe and when the turbo has reached past its max psi setting. I mean, its basically common knowledge if anyone knows cars

Thanks. I was wondering what that was. Is that a typical sound when the car is brand new or does it happen over time due to wear of certain components?

@@Redhotlugnut oh, its normal. Its when the throttle is shut n you have alot of air pressure tht has no where to go. If there wasnt a " blow off " valve " tht air pressure would go back into the turbo n damage it. Or one of the turbo pipings would blow apart. I bought a book called " maximum boost " before the internet was the internet and now You can find anything you were curious about . i was building my turbo kit for a honda yrs ago. I still have the book. Believe it or not but Forced induction is almost as old as the combustible engine. It really is fascinating.

@@vperkv6554 Yeah, the lower displacement vehicles in Europe with twin turbos to try to get the power along with the emissions is very cool. They have nice torque for such a small engine. Now w the Teslas and the pull they have is no comparison. *I should do my research before I say as I've not been looking at new cars for a good 5 years now* but the NA manufacturers seemed to not want to throw a turbo on their engines for some reason? They also steered away from diesel for again an unknown reason (I know the older higher sulfur fuel was an issue but that's long gone) And yeah, there's some great tech that wasn't used. Look at Tesla's alcohol run internal combustion engine. Thing was like 70% efficient (not sure on what scale?) the first version. Anyway, thanks for the info on the noise from that Turbo. I'm living in East Africa now so there's zero use for a car like that here but if I ever move back to NA, I'd get a Mazdaspeed 3 and put a twin turbo on it for sure! What do you drive?
@vperkv65544 жыл бұрын
@@Redhotlugnut keep in mind, you can only get twin turbo on a v6 or 8. It has to have 2 separate exhaust manifolds. Tq wise, you would be talking about a super charger. Turbos have spool lag. The smaller they are, thr faster they spool, but the power band peaks (flats out), the bigger it is, the longer it takes to spool ( tht pulling feeling) but in turn, the higher rpm , the more psi n power you will have. I had a giant sc61 precision turbo on a LS in a civic. I built the top end ( the head) but left the bottom end alone. ( only put a block guard on) it was make insane power past 8,000 rpm but the bottom end couldnt handle it. It had some low rpm lag but the pull was INSANE. But, you get used to it n feels slow after a while n the power is NEVER ENOUGH. It ends up becoming a money pit. It really is a rich mans game.
