CNJ 113 THE Alco 0-6-0 ! (Epic Train Chase)

Welcome back to Minersville Pennsylvania, Home of the mighty CNJ 113. This 100 year old steam engine was built by ALCO - American Locomotive Company in 1923 for the Central Railroad Company of New Jersey. These engines are known as consolidations or switchers for they were used for local freight/ yard switching jobs.
113 is stationed next to the former Reading Lines - Minersville station year round , but is only fired a few times a year. The 113 trust is responsible for the upkeep/ maintenance of the locomotive. The adjacent live tracks are owned and operated by the Reading and Northern Railroad (RBMN).

Thanks for bringing us along on the ride. What a gorgeous example of a steam locomotive that has it all. I loved how you captured everything so well. Especially the chufs, and what a beautiful sounding whistle she has. The billowing clouds of smoke and steam is a sight to behold and definitely doesn't disappoint. It really makes one long for a simpler more romantic era where steam reigned Supreme. Kudos to all of those who are dedicated to maintaining these just for us to experience and enjoy. How else would anyone have a chance to know what they have been missing.

The pops of the wheel slippage was awesome to hear, and you captured it several times. Love it. That Jamie is alright. She's the fastest and safest train chaser around. Although I did find myself pushing the imaginary brake pedal on the passenger side floor mat a few times when I rode with her. Lol.

Great Video Nick, I was there on Sunday, it was my first time seeing her and she was wearing a L&NE Longbell 3 Chime, the fog and rain gave for some really great shots!!! Love that SP 6 Chime!!

It is! Did you see the cab marking "6S46" toward the end of the video? What that meant in CNJ parlance was "6 wheel Switcher 46,000 pounds of tractive effort." Tractive effort was the pulling power of the locomotive and at 46,000 pounds CNJ 113 was more powerful than some of the CNJ's passenger Pacific type locomotives! A BIG 0-6-0 indeed!

Thanks for bringing us along on what looked like a grey dismal day Nick! That is dismal except for that wonderful CNJ 113 going through it's paces! Your camera work was first-rate and that was a nice effect starting at 12:25 of the crossing gate dropping and revealing the scene like the opening of a curtain, AND the "curtain" closing at the end of the scene. Very clever indeed! Don't be surprised if a lot of railfan videographers copy that technique! A FAST 25 minutes! Thanks for posting!

An excellent video, as always. Since I'm retired, I'm hoping to make a few fan trips next summer. I'll probably go to Steam Town and Strasburg and some of the small railroad towns, just to catch some action. I've ridden the New Hope And Ivyland a number of times over the years, starting when I was just a kid with my parents. It's an excellent railroad and the surrounding town is quite historic. If you haven't been there, I highly recommend it. Have a great Holiday Season.

Thanks so much! The diesel is for the initial trip and just in case. The steam engine pulls the train the entire return trip. I rode in the cab of the diesel last year and the engineer “ chilled “ and just watched the air gauges on the entire trip back.
