Excellent video and very helpful to a brand new AP Lang teacher. I think the point about students applying the rhetorical terms they have learned- e.g. "the author appeals to the reader's sense of logic" rather than saying, "the author uses logos"- is great advice. You want to genuinely show your knowledge and not give it a gimmicky, name-dropping appearance. And it is all about what any individual text is doing, as you say- noticing and commenting on patterns, broadly speaking, and how these create meaning and impact on an audience (also identifying striking or unique moments of a text). Also, rhetorically active verbs, man, that is gospel truth right there. Glad to be a subscriber to your channel now, Coach Hall!

when we are writing the rhetorical essay, can we say "they" or "their"
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
When referring to the author? Typically you want to refer to them as either he or she; however, I know some students prefer to use the term they. For grammatical purposes, I would say he or she, but that is my opinion.
@jacoblashbrook18114 жыл бұрын
Coach Hall, could you probably make a video of yourself composing a rhetorical essay using these strategies. It would be much more helpful if we can get an examplar, most of us are visual leaners. @CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you don’t have to have 3 body paragraphs, especially if it is forced or if it means under-developing your ideas. You could also do 3 body paragraphs and no conclusion. I demo this in the “write with me (part 2)” video I uploaded earlier today. (Part 1 is about annotating.)

Hi Coach, so about what you said at around 1:53, if we know the name of the device, we should still just explain what is being done rather than just simply stating the name? What cases would the name of the device get the message across better than explaining its function? And btw, thank you so much for this video! It's super helpful after having gone a semester without an AP Lang class!
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
I tend to prefer that students use a verb to describe the choice rather than a noun. Devices are normally nouns. You can still use the device name, especially if you are trying to save time and don’t know what else to say or if you feel like you already used the verb multiple times for some reason and want to add variety.

Hey Coach Hall! Thank you for really being a beacon of hope for us during online schooling 😇, But when picking your thesis, could you say The author embeds (Logical, Emotional, Credible) appeals, then talk about all the devices he/she uses to create that effect? Or is it the other way around? Also, when you say the author uses allusion or repetition, how can you really give deep analysis of that since it’s just one single choice
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
I would probably say that the writer “provides facts to create a logical appeal” or “by providing facts such as..., the writer logically conveys that...” Allusions are something tricky to develop. The Abigail Adams prompt has a metaphor and allusion. Some students group them. Others analyzed them separately. Either way is fine as long as your develop your ideas. With repetition, think about why that particular phrase matters, so you’d examine the word choice and tone. You could analyze the effect within the speech. Does it create coherence? A cadence? Does it reinforce a particular idea? Why does this matter to the audience? How does this help the writer build his message? Why is this relevant for the historical context?

Does logos necessarily have to be stat or can it just be a logical argument. For example, the author explains how he is gonna rebuild somethings and cites the text and the outcomes. Is that considered logos because in many of these practice test there are more logical processes.
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
Logos can be stats, facts, conditional sentences, etc. It doesn’t have to just be stats. The key is to figure out what the writer is doing to make it logical or reasonable and why. So in your example, it seems “citing” would be a good verb to use if the writer is bringing in outside info to make his/argument more logical. Then you’d want to think about why he/she did that and how it impacts the purpose and/or message.

Hello do you recommend writing three paragraphs or two paragraphs? How many pieces of evidence do we need to use per paragraph?
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
Readers look for quality over quantity, so don't force three paragraphs if you only have time for two. The goal is to develop your paragraphs as thoroughly as possible. As far as evidence, you want to create layers of evidence and commentary within your paragraph, so you'd like need two pieces of evidence or more. It depends on what you're writing. Evidence can be a direct quote or paraphrase.

Hi! I love your videos, and I do have a question: So my teacher encourages us to separate the passage into 3 different parts and then use those parts to analyse for our body paragraphs. My question is if I used contrast (or any other rhetorical devices) for one of the body paragraphs, and I could only find 1 quote in the first section of the passage I divided, is it okay to go, say, to the third section of the passage and use a quote from there? Or should I only stick to the parts I divided for each body paragraph?
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
Good question. In theory, yes if you transition well within your paragraph. I tend to like students to divide the essay into parts as well. You could also look for related choices within that section. Or depending on the choice, you can analyze the word choice and/or tone or appeals created by that choice.

If you can write a short conclusion, that’s fine. The College Board said that an incomplete essay can still score well if written well.

If it comes down to developing a body paragraph or writing a conclusion, I’d choose the body paragraph because of the evidence and commentary portion of the rubric.
