Thanks for sharing…Its amazing how many coaches say “my team cannot finish when near the goal. The answer is simple “STRIKING A BALL IS AN INDIVIDUAL SKILL. So develop practices and always have a goal and GK involved. PRACTICE, PRACTICE AND PRACTICE with many opportunities. Include different variation of FEED, so you get variation. “An interestibg observation, is as the game moves towards small sided play, STRIKIBG A BALL CORRECTLY IS a “skill” that is being lost, but a skill that all great players have.. its a SUPERSKILL”…

Very good topic. This spring I took a U14 girls team with 75% players who had never played before and we won the championship against a team with 85% experienced players. The way we did it was a lot of practices that were as close to a real game simulation as possible and bringing out the best in every single player. We had players who had never played who were scoring goals by the end of the season. It was challenging at first because we were given a team of three really good players and 11 inexperienced players. At first, the three wanted to dominate the entire game. When I pulled them out of the game, we started winning. I then told them that it was their job to help the other players reach their full potential, not to take over the game.

Another great interview. I think he briefly touched on something important regarding feedback. With my U12 and U16 rec teams i apply the training nurses, doctors, opticians, and managers the past 15 years. Feedback whether negative or positive must be specific. You get get more out of a brief comment like "great idea with the through pass just little more touch" in a small side game than you can from a 10 mins of talking in front of the group or a thousand "great jobs".

This was great conversation! I think it was great to hear the way players mindset need to be trained on what questions to ask the opponent and how to ask them. Can go on forever! Where are you based from? Rest of the coaches in the comment section, feel free to answer this question for yourself as well. Thanks for posting this conversation again! Cheers!
