Great video coach. Lots of information to take in. I have a club match tomorrow morning and by the look of the weather it will be waterproofs. Keep 'em coming coach.

My course in Italy, no mats. It’s on a mountain so most holes seem to be hitting into an upslope 😢 the weather has been atrocious this year, before the course coped well with rain, but the amount we’ve had this year has been unbelievable, i lost balls that landed in the fairway never to be seen again, buried.

Great video, it all makes sense. We use the same tee boxes in my golf club, in Ireland, as the summer but from more forward tee markers. I hate those mats...

Stats on chipping and long putting’s winter improvements are probably based on well maintained golf courses, where water is brushed away regularly from the greens. Otherwise, chips tend to skid instead of spinning and checking, making harder to control their distance, and putts don’t roll slowed down by water…

What % handicap suggested for informal comps over winter when playing of mats on fairways and mats around greens and the tee moved forward for shorter course? 95% or 80% or 75%
@petercrews47093 ай бұрын
That looks a nice course you're playing Coach, where is it in the south west? Although I'm in Devon a.t.m. I usually live in France and to answer you question, my course there has winter tees, but they are the worst I've ever come across! Just old range mats thrown down, not even levelled or taken up in the summer. They are curled at the edges and solid as rocks - so most players prefer to tee up in the mud behind!

Winter golf? Mats? I’m in Ontario Canada, and my course closes on November 3! Winter golf is not an option, we’re going to have a couple feet of snow and about 180 days of waiting for the course to open! Some travel to warmer climates, and I’m jealous 🏌️♂️

Chipping improves (I think) because greens are softer, and more importantly, they can pick their lie so the chips become easier to predict rather than guessing the lie
@annefilippobertozzi76013 ай бұрын
I would say pitching more than chipping: chips tend to skid instead of spin and check, therefore making harder to control the distance.

My group plays off the yellow tees in the summer. We have mats in the winter but the course is the same length so that the tees keep the same rating. It's a slog losing 50 yards off a drive and lots of yards off all the clubs. I would prefer to play off the red tees in winter but they haven't been measured for men and don't have mats so it's not allowed. I won't name the course but it's in the north of England.

Any tips for chipping from those bloody plastic mats that our club are insisting on us using all winter?
@fontyyy3 ай бұрын
@@samwhite8093 be firm, it's soft once its on the floor, and keep the loft down, taking a 54, 58 or 60° from a mat is nigh on impossible, you can't use the bounce. It's a different shot, but use an 8i and get it rolling. Make sure you get yourself a putt.

Probably delivering too much loft. Do you hit it high?
@papab32723 ай бұрын
Don't feel bad those numbers are incorrect. We all make mistakes coach. The Shot Scope average number for a 0 handicap 7 iron is 159yds not 181. The PGA Tour average isn't even as high as 181

@@CoachLockey Not that I've noticed, though that was my first thought. I've been playing off 7 with best rounds being 2 over so I've been quite solid. My strike is often spoken of as being really good by teaching pros. Quite frankly I can't think of anything other than a slow swing speed or delivered loft. Thanks for all your videos by the way, they've been getting me thinking and are always enjoyable.

On the subject of footware... Coach do you use the same spiked shoes without spikes during summer and the screw them in later? I just got a new spiked pair and thinking about it as I am going somewhere Sunny (an old Muppet Tour course actually) but worried that the spike holes will wear down not allowing me anymore to screw the spikes in later.
