Salvador Sanchez was simply maybe the greatest pure Featherweight Boxer I've ever seen. He was so slick and he fought with a calmness that you just dont see in fighters. He could move in and out, go side to side, stand and fight. I've never seen a fighter so relaxed in the ring. The way he would duck his head and turn his body slipping punches and then counter punching his opponents. 2 wins over Lopez, defeated Wilfredo Gomez, Azumah Nelson Juan Laporte and Ruben Costello. Sanchez vs Pacquiao in a fantasy match at 126 now that would have been a dream fight.
@mariosanchez82364 жыл бұрын
In the majority, if not all, of the fights he had in the States, the commentators would remark on the laid back calmness, usually saying something along the lines of how, when looking at the way he handled things in the ring with that calmness etc, made it almost hard to believe he was only 23 yrs old (23 yrs and 3 months old at the Nelson fight) and like you are saying, he didn't get rattled, at least noticeably. In the Ruben Castillo fight, the Pat Cowdell fight, and the Nelson fight, which ended up being 3 tough defenses for Chava, where the challenges had plenty of moments of shine, still never saw any real panic or a rush to make something happen, to me, that is a big sign of how much confidence he had in himself and his abilities. I mean, I know that the judges had him up by few rounds in the NElson fight going into the 15th rd, which, I mean, Ill just say that if they'd Nelson up and finishing the fight would've given him the win, it wouldn't have exactly been outrageous to my eyes. Anyway, point being, I'd think Sal and his corner would have recognized going into that last round there was a possibility Nelson could earn the decision, they had to at least believe the fight was close, as it was a close fight Anyway, again, assuming they would know that, Sal goes out and gets it done. No panic. Just absolute professionalism. I believe Sal had wins over the next three owners of his title, two by stoppage, Gomez and Nelson. That's an amazing fact to me, surprised it's not mentioned more frequently

@@mariosanchez8236 Yes Well Said and I was getting more and more into the fights back then especially the smaller weight classes. I was around 14, 15 when I first saw Sanchez fight Danny Little Red Lopez. Back in those days you pretty much only saw fights on ABC'S Wide World of Sports on Saturdays and sometimes Sunday afternoon. CBS'S sports spectacler and NBC'S Sportsworld. HBO was around in 70's but didn't start getting bigger until 81, 82. Remember too The Sanchez and Gomez fight at that time was the first ever Million dollar gate for a Featherweight Championship fight. The fight was actually held on a Thursday night and was on Closed Circuit TV. It wasn't Shown or made available to a lot of the Eastern part of the Country at least not in North Carolina. Anyway I'll never forget Howard Cosell who was actually covering a Thursday night preseason Football game commenting on the fight by saying that Salvador Sanchez has Stopped Wilfredo Gomez in the 8th round in Las Vegas . Cosell sounded surprised because a lot of experts picked Gomez to beat Sanchez. I remember watching the replay of the fight and Sanchez was so relaxed and smiling before the fight. He was so ready for that fight. I think he just did so many things good. His jab didn't look that good but he scored with it. His right hand wasn't the hardest but he could nail you with it. His combinations weren't overtly impressive but he could get 3 and 4 punches off on you like it was nothing. I think his biggest asset was his angles and the way he could slide and turn his body just ever so slightly to avoid being hit solid. Floyd Mayweather has good upper body movement. Sanchez was just so smooth. Wish he snd Eusebio Pedroza could have fought. I dont know how much better he would have gotten I know he could have gone junior Lightweight but Lightweight and junior Welterweight I think would have been tough. He was 5'6 and his frame wasn't the biggest but who knows. Great Champion, you didn't mind watching a fight go 15 rounds with him because he was an artist.

@@mariosanchez8236 I enjoyed Boxing so much better back then. There were fights on Television almost every week. There had been talk of him possibly moving up to fight Alexis Arguello at the time just before his death in August of 1982. Alexis though had signed t fight Aaron Pryor in November of 82. I know Sanchez probably would have made his next mandatory defense had he not passed away to close out the 1982 year but I always wondered what direction he would have went next. Wilfredo Gomez had came back strong and had 4 successful title defenses of his 122 pound title in 1982 so there could have been the possibility of a Sanchez vs Gomez rematch as well as a rematch with Juan Laporte going into 83. There possibly could have been a unification bout between him and WBA Champ Eusebio Pedroza but it would have took an act of Congress to get Pedroza's people and the WBA to agree to such a fight. That fight wouldn't have happened till 84 if it were to be. There also could have been a move to jump up to 130. Remember that same year in December 1982 Bobby Chacon won back the WBC Super Featherweight Championship from Rafael Bazooka Limon. Had Sanchez not been killed that might have been a fight that would have been made as well. Hector Camaicho too was emerging around 1982 and 83 so again that would have been an interesting fight at 130 for a lot of money. Think about it another Mexico vs Puerto Rico matchup. Huge Money . Also a possible move to Lightweight to fight Ray Mancini wouldn't have been out of the ram of possibility. Just so many different directions and scenarios that could have played out. We just have to enjoy the time we had to see him fight and appreciate his craft.
@curtismcneil86954 жыл бұрын
@Efrain Guzman I think a fight between Sanchez and Pedroza would have been a chess match. Eusebio Pedroza was a tall Featherweight at 5"10. It would have taken Sanchez a few rounds to figure out Pedroza. Ultimately, I think Sanchez would have beaten him by decision but close maybe even split.

But we went to fights...and I watched them on tv all the time. I loved boxing. Ray Leonard's trainer and I use to hang out and talk boxing in Venice California in a little health food joint. One day he says to me, you know more about boxing then most people in the game. I loved it. And this was an era of greatness. Toughness. Real fighters. Danny was always tough, but Sanchez was his master. Danny could be taking a beating and suddenly knock you out. But not Sanchez. He was too good...different. Sad that his life was cut so short. Boxing today, outside of a few guys Like Lomo, Fury, Inoue, a step lower Spence, Golovkin, and a couple of others, it's mostly trash. Hardly worth watching. Sad.

What a great boxer. He is easily one of the best fighters I have ever seen. I was very sad when he passed away. Like the announcer, I thought he would reign for a long time.

Sanchez was a complete fighter at the highest level. Lopez stopped 39 opponents in his 42 wins so he had to be a good puncher and he could not hurt Sanchez. Sal just wore Lopez down in those 2 fights.

Right? Might a been because he figured Sanchez was gonna land a ton a flush/clean power punches. Or he was a dildo

He reminded me of a smaller version of Arguello. The classic Boxer/Puncher style. I have never seen Sanchez look exhausted in any of his fights, either. He was brilliant at controlling the distance and the most beautiful footwork and balance. What a tragic death. He could have gone down as an all-time great. We missed out on his future accomplishments.

Sanchez can slip and defend like no other even against some one like Danny Lopez
