Never liked him much at the time but your exactly right. Lewis was one of if not the most naturally gifted athletes in the sport of boxing. A extremely intelligent and precise boxer, rarely ever saw him off his game. As a kid I used to say he looked like a woman if he had makeup on. Lol, stupid I know. Luckily I learned to respect a man if he's legit rather than sling hate and misjudge someone I've never even met.

Lewis comes across as an easy going guy on TV but he was a mean fighter, especially in the early days, look at this fight and the Ruddock bout. He had a very tough fight with Bruno in my opinion but when he caught Bruno and shook him, well he piled on the pressure and finished it in style.

@@djrondo1224 Of all the guys u mentioned, I know of Bowe ducking Lewis. That one was for all to see, Bowe threw his championship belt in the bin in press conference rather than fight Lewis. I'm not so sure if Lewis and Holyfield actually WAITED for Tyson to come out of prison (implying that they ducked him before). I have never heard of a formal challenge for a fight between them which had been turned down. We must accept that Mike Tyson's imprisonment disturbed his career & a lot of potential fights, even with boxers u mentioned. U even admit later in your comment that Holyfield never ducked anyone. Only Bowe ever ducked a fight in that generation of boxers.

And you are right no contract or anything formal for Lewis or Holyfield before Tyson went to prison but everyone got in line after when they saw he was not quite the same Iron Mike. And ya Holyfield fought Bowe 3x and Tyson 2 and everyone else Foreman, Lewis, Moore etc..

I don't think he would not have fought any, if not all of the said boxers, had he not been imprisoned. As for Bowe maybe 'getting back on Lewis' by not agreeing to fight him (Lewis) and sacrificing his World Championship Belt just to prove a point to Lewis?? That would be major pettiness, don't u think? I tend to believe another view. I think Bowe knew what was in store for him should he go ahead with the fight and he chose to 'excuse himself' .

@@skeelo6219 I think Bowe beats Lewis up until 1995. Once Lewis started working with Emanuel Steward then I put my money on Lewis. Bowe was a better fighter early in pro career. Lewis had bad footwork and struggled vs fighters who,could jab and Bowe was as big with a better jab. Bowe at that time was also much better on the inside. Lewis takes a trilogy 2-1. Also Tyson was never got on the level he was on before being imprisoned.

All of you bashing Merchant... he can say foolish things at times, but he could also be a very amusing, clever, and intelligent commentator/analyst at times as well. He’s an exceptionally unique and classic personality in boxing broadcast history, one of the best ever in that regard... his very, very dry, old-man-like delivery is original and unmistakeable, and it really works for what he does. Merchant is this bumbling old man you only half pay attention to until he suddenly drops a bomb of sly wit or clever insight or deep wisdom that makes you grin and think “this old man’s really with it after all”. Merchant at his best is slick and intelligent... and the best is when he waits for that little pause in the broadcast commentary and then drops a quotable, like the famous “death by a thousand left hands”, and many, many others. Not to take anything away from Lewis. He did a good job overwhelming Biggs. I think most comments start with Biggs is not because he is an American and Lewis is a Brit. This guy Biggs had a lot of potential, that for some reason was not actualized. When I watched him fight Tyson, I thought it was too early for him to go for Tyson. He needed more before taking on a guy like Tyson. It was a mistake too risky. I think most people wish that Biggs stayed in the game again because of the perceived potential. I have read one comment that Biggs was drinking too much another said he was damaged by Tyson. Whatever the explanation may be his career did not pick up as most of us hoped. I wish him well, I liked the guy.

Lewis' best fight was against a fellow Brit ... Gary Mason... an unknown dangerous Heavyweight who only lost once... to Lewis... he had 34 KO's in 37 fights. On paper he was dangerous and Lewis took the fight anyway. Props to him. Biggs gets props for showing up

Lewis looks terrific in this fight. As for Biggs you can see flashes of the skills that made him a top amateur. Not enough for the pro game though. Lewis showed him the door and rather rudely too.

Biggs was definitely skillful and probably should have been a World Heavyweight Champion or at the very least a contender. 6ft 5, great jab, really good on his feet, decent right cross etc. Years of snorting cocaine, alcoholism and leading a bad lifestyle takes its toll on a man and you can see it here with Briggs. Just couldn't fight with any degree of intensity after a couple of rounds. Totally spent.

True, although the current era we’re in now is pretty good, just not quite to the level of some of the great Golden Age eras of the past. We do have at least two great heavyweights now in Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, and a number of other formidable fighters at the elite level, such as Deontay Wilder, Dillian Whyte, Oleksandr Usyk, Joseph Parker, Andy Ruiz Jr, Dereck Chisora, etc... and the talented upcoming Jared Anderson, who’s very early in his career, but is likely on-track to become the next great long-awaited American HW champ

I think he fought Tyson the 2nd time because he had no choice if he ever wanted to become world champion. Actually that fight was one of his best, simply because he was so shocked by what was happening he had few canned observations. He had one of his best calls in the 8th round when Douglas suddenly came on... Lampley was babbling about something when Douglas landed a devastating combination that drove Tyson into the ropes and Merchant blurted out "MIKE IS HURT!!!!" with pure shock and astonishment. I'll never forget that moment

Punching quick mid-range, then using a shoulder to block with a semi-Philly shell Able to punch to the body fast from a counter left to right quick Able to come in with a quick combo, back up, get punches landed on, then return smoothly. Lennox Lewis at this stage of his career already looks very well-rounded, lethal and savvy: He has a great jab and utilizes very strong looping/straight counter-punches, very effectively and deftly. He has a good arsenal of very powerful -though quasi-telegraphed- punches in close range, especially that overhead right smash and the uppercut. I however, don't like the fact that he's often not active enough in letting his fists fly and I hate the fact -whether he can get away with it or not- that he feels the need or desire to tie his opponents up so often, which I feel is a form of 'cheating' that even the great Muhammad Ali utilized far too often, also, and got away with it. If I was fighting Lewis, and I won the fight -- I wouldn't offer him a rematch simply because of how often Lewis ties his opponent up like Ali did. That would be incredibly annoying to me as a fighter. I would never tie an opponent up, if I could help it, except in rare circumstances -as tying someone up shows a flaw in my confidence and/or fighting abilities...

@@1man1bike1road I agree, Tyson was so exciting to watch but he just doesn't have the wins on his record to suggest he should be ranked with the likes of Ali, Holmes, Lewis and Louis. Not all fighters have the opportunity to face and defeat great fighters in their prime but they then have to beat a good number of very good fighters. Tyson didn't do either and lost to Douglas and then to the two class fighters he faced - Holyfield and Lewis(Holmes was in no shape when fought Tyson but it still ranks as one of Tyson's best results). Tyson was younger than both Holyfield and Lewis so although he may have been beyond his best form I don't easily accept that as an excuse, it was a shortcoming and another reason that he wasn't as good as some believe. A great champion isn't past his best at 24 or shot at 34 come to that. One of the criterias for greatness is reasonable longevity. When Ali was past his best he still beat Foreman, Frazier etc. In Biggs previous fight to facing Lewis, he gave Riddick Bowe a serious run for his money so again Lewis's performance was more than credible for a fighter just coming up to world level. Tyson always had problems with tall fighters. Even in his so called prime, guys like Green, Smith and in particular Tucker were fighters Tyson couldn't put away and it's not coincidental that they were all 6.5" guys, Douglas was 6.4" with a good jab. None of these guys were in Lewis's league so those who go on about how Mike would have destroyed Lewis if they met earlier just don't have evidence on their side. Not to mention the unavoidable truth that Tyson actively dodged Lewis, loosing the WBC title and several million dollars due to court action by Lewis as a consequence. The fact that Lewis took Tyson to court to get him to fight him is somehow ignored by all these Tyson fantasists.

I think unlike what was shown in this video, Lewis is almost a close 6 foot 5=inch guy, Tyrell Biggs is probably half an inch taller around 6 foot 5.5inches or perhaps a shade more. Lewis looked huge in the later part of his career because he grew into size - from 230.5 pounds in this fight all the way to nearly 248 and then 258 in his last fight. The 18 pounds increase in weight makes an already tall fighter look huger. It also helps that even today barring 3-4, not much heavyweights are over 6 foot 6 (Zhang, Joyce, Makhmudev, Fury and Wilder come to mind).

Why does it seem as though nobody knows what a shovel hook is? I mean, technically there are only 4 categories of punches, straight punches, hooks, shovel hooks and uppercuts, the rest of them are all variations of those... so why is it that people can't remember just 4 different kinds of punches? Why are shovel hooks always left out? They are very distinct by their angle and power and are some of the best short-ranged weapons a boxer has. Lennox Lewis uses them very effectively, and they are NOT uppercuts!!

I think Biggs management was a lot of his downfall, I mean he just fought Riddick Bowe a couple months before this fight and obviously Biggs drug problem from the past did a toll on him, Biggs had a great jab and had skills but he needed a trainer like Teddy Atlas or Emanuel Steward and did not take huge fights right back to back.

Man, Lampley and Merchant used to hate big time on Lewis. Lennox 17-0 record was call ludicrous and weak because of his resume, 1. He was still considered a prospect. 2 Up to that point Lewis defeated decent names on his resume such as Gary Mason who was undefeated 35-0 and former world champs Mike Weaver and Glenn McCroy. Not saying world beaters but a good test for an upcomer 3. Bowe's resume at 18-0 was way worse and had zero name recognitions and worse was they never trashed Bowe once he was champion for his defenses against Dokes and Fergueson

Im pretty sure Pinklon Thomas, Biggs, Tubbs, Seldon and Coetzer were far better than Mason McCroy and Weaver who was literally a Grandpa. Jim and Larry criticize Bowe heavy after Ferguson even though Ferguson beat Mercer as a tune up when Mercer was signed to Bowe and Dokes was on a 13 winning streak and literally his first defense. Dokes and Ferguson were more credible than Phil Jackson and McCall. Larry Merchant and Jim Lamply were actually huge Lewis fanboys like you and admitted after McCall lost that they thought Lewis would never lose and were his biggest supporters.
