COARSE HAIR VS FINE HAIR..Can You Tell The Difference

ive notice many women on YT seem to think that coarse hair is a bad thing, im not sure why, if i say my hair is coarse, that's because it is..why some people get upset is beyond me, i figure maybe they just don't really understand what coarse is, because if they did, they wouldn't take it so personally, well here are some pictures which i hope will help you to determine between the two..... i met a man with type 1 hair straight as a bone..but i could see the texture was different and the hair was dull, i ran my hand through his hair and wow, unbelievable, his hair was so coarse, it felt very dry, hard, and rough, he laughed and said to me, i have hay hair, that's what he called it, i said to him no, you have coarse hair, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Fine hair has the smallest circumference. Fine hair can be so soft and silky that it can actually feel like feathers. Unless it has been chemically altered to damage the cuticle, fine hair reflects light the best of the three textures. When it is healthy, fine hair will often have a natural megawatt shine. Fine hair generally has a much thinner cortex than other hair textures and generally does not contain the inner medulla like other hair textures. Usually only the cortex and cuticle are present in fine hair which adds to it fragility.

Medium hair is the most common type of texture. Medium textured hair is neither super soft nor rough to the touch. Medium hair has lots of body and bounce and usually holds either a blow-dry shape or any type of set very well. It has the most styling flexibility of the three types. Although most medium textured hair usually contains the medulla, cortex and cuticle structural layers, there are exceptions.
Coarse hair has the largest circumference. Coarse hair can feel heavy and rough. Exceptionally coarse hair may feel a little like horse hair to the touch. The outside layers of coarse hair are often overlapped at the scales and raised from the shaft. It holds many styles with ease but can look wild and bushy with the wrong cut or style. It almost always contains three distinct layers known as the medulla, cortex and cuticle.
Wiry Hair which has a very hard, glassy finish as a result of the way that the cuticle scales lie flat against the hair shaft. Wiry hair can also be coarse, medium or fine and usually contains all three structural layers.
there is so many degrees of coarseness, as a rule of thumb, coarse hair has more texture to the hair, lack shine, more dull in appearance, lacks great curl definition, need more moisture, and too much heat styling will cause breakage
coarse hair can look and feel as fine hair once flat ironed though, and using the right products
Fine hair lacks frizz, soft in texture amazing shine great definition or hold curls beautifully, not as dry soft feeling in texture, smooth texture

Pros of coarse hair: More voluminous & thick Does not get damaged as easily (less split ends, can grow longer, etc) Can hold hairstyles without hairspray Cons of coarse hair: Dull, and not as shiny Not very soft Can be hard to comb I have hair in the middle, but more towards the coarse side :)

My hair is coarse with thick strands, and it doesn't shine as much as finer hair and has a duller appearance, however on the other hand it's very strong and resilient and easy for me to retain length without damage.

i think medium hair thick with a wave is like a really nice hair type too, because it has alot of hair, plus its medium which has best of both worlds thickness body and shine, and since its alot of hair it looks like a lot of hair

i dont like using the words fine or coarse with people with afo textured hair because i always hear it referred to in the same manner as saying good hair or bad hair. i was always told that my hair was fine and thin, meaning that my strands are fine and the number of strand are few (thin). but when i say this, i noticed people would respond with yeah you have nice hair...which is strange because my fine and thin hair can be disastrous combination on coily hair (i believe) if not babied.

I have fine but very defined curly hair and it's hard to find products that don't weigh it down. My mom has very fine hair with a wave and my dad has thick course curly (more like a low fro) hair...I'm literally in between. I found that alcohol free products work well (i.e. ampro believe it or not!) when I wash and let it hair dry (it takes a very long time to dry). It's shiny and my curls look great.

Examine and compare your shed hair strands. If your one who feels that you have multiple textures, this will be easier for you. Be it straight, wavy, curly, "coily" and/or kinky--you will be able to identify the variables. Take into account the strands surface/cuticle scale appearance, circumference, (which ultimately determines how coarse that particular strand is) and elasticity. It is quite rare that someone would have head of hair made solely of coarse or even fine strands

UtubeHairCare im an african american male and just out of curiousity i heard that the reason that african american hair is coarse bwcause our hair is super curly and all curly hair dosent feel smooth plus it doesnt distribute oils well and thats why its rough in texture is that true? also why is asian hair coarse even though its straight? what makes all hair coarse?

it just means your hair strand is thick. If you have curly hair, you can have fine hair. It's a misconception because curly hair looks coarse.

yeah , i saw a video about type4 hair then they made a video about type 3 in the videos they said type 4 was coarse hair but type 3 isn't, smh, fine can come in type 1234 coarse can come in type 1234, coarse hair is more common in all hair type but the degree of coarseness varies greatly

If you look at one a strand of my hair, its shape is almost waist length, but has crooked irregular almost waves but with kinks at the lower half of the hair. my hair is coarse and thick and dull and I wonder why.. lol when I have kids I am going to make sure its with a man, don't care what colour, who has fine straight hair that doesn't go bald.

definitely a bunch of facts, but the three textures fine, medium, coarse all refer to the diameter of which each hair strand has, for example someone with coarse hair will have the largest diameter of all hair textures, medium is in the middle, and fine is the least, but its texture has nothing to do with its curl pattern, and also certain hair has more cuticle scales then others which accounts for the sheen, but coarse doesnt change the sheen depends on all factors

well if that is the case my hair would be super fine, my strands are super thin, but the texture is of a rougher texture, so to my belief my hair is coarse, i you run your finger down the strands you will feel an un even texture, it not smooth at all, some area tho will be smoother

What's so cruel about it? These channels are mainly about ethnic hair; however, that's not what's portrayed in this video. Moreover, she doesn't know if these folks in the video have fine, coarse or other so it's irrelevant if we can discern it or not. She doesn't know them, it's just the appearance.
