The only reason the dog can go back and forth is because he is the soul guider, it’s even answered in the movie. Another thing it is NOT a purgatory though I see your reasoning. Finally there is a ruler for the land of the dead search a little deeper into our culture. (Also people before photographs people were remembered by items)

also before photographs there were other ways of capturing ones likeness. you could have an artist paint a portrait, a bust could be carved or a silhouette could be made. in some cultures a death mask was also a possibility, that is an actual molding of a persons face recently after they have died.
@lilymartinez38736 жыл бұрын
Tip Tod also in the movie it’s said that before pictures, they live in the land of the dead when there memories are spread. There memories have to be passed on by somebody who knew them when they were alive. Which is why in the movie hector told Miguel he couldn’t bring his friend back from the final death because he didn’t know him when he was alive.
@lilymartinez38736 жыл бұрын
Tip Tod so mama Imelda’s parents were there at some point but like hector said, everybody goes to the final death eventually. All her living relatives that knew her when she was alive passed away so she went to the final death. Well mama Imelda’s parents did, that’s why it won’t ever be over crowded, because they all eventually go there like he said.

De la Cruz, when he sang in Mexico City in the day of the dead, why he didn’t teleport to the Land of the Dead? The course started when Ernesto stole Hector’s guitar because he took it when he was dead. The course only works for family members from Hector? Miguel stole a chicken leg before stealing the guitar and he didn’t teleport. And at the start of the film Miguel feels that he is course pretty interesting..

Anybody else find it weird that coco is the only one in the movie who actually looks like she died of old age because well....she looks old and every one else looks like they died on their 30s or 40s or 50s. I mean of course Ernesto died by being crushed by a bell and Hector died of poisining. And then I find it weird when the little skeleton girl points at Miguel in the bridge and the skeleton mom says not to point. So that means either the skeletons can reproduce or.....my other one is that there was a nuclear explosion that killed everyone and God said "ther r 2 many ded pipol so we need mor speic" So he made the world of the dead.

I've always thought that the age you are in the land of the dead depends on how old you are in the picture your family puts on the ofrenda (if that's how you spell it, idk). If you have no picture, then your age is the age when you died. I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is.

Also kids and whole families can die too. It's a grime thing to think about but when the little girl was pointing with her mom, they probably both died young in an accident or something. Edit: Also during that time, the medicine and the technology isnt so advanced that people died around their 60's and even Latinos look pretty good in their 60's that make them look like no more than 15years younger so like their 40's. This movie was placed in current times which is 2018, and the great great grandparents are like in 1920-30? Meaning if you live in a Pueblo, youd wouldnt have basis antibiotics that would kill the bacteria or treat anything and then you die. I have pictures of my great great grandparents too and they looked pretty young (for their age) but they were like 60-70.

I find the fact that Coco still looked like an old woman in the Land of the Dead weird. That would mean in the Land of the Dead, you look like you did when you died, more or less, although you can still change clothes there. Anyway, if you look the same age in the Land of the Dead as you were when you died, then that would mean Miguel’s entire family died when they were about middle-aged, except Hector who looks about mid-thirties. There was also the scene on the bridge when Miguel and his family were walking across and passed a dead woman and her daugter who was obviously a child. I immediately thought that was a bit morbid because the mum looked quite young, and the girl dead despite the fact that she was about 5. Maybe they both died in an accident.

You already answered the question of who dictates the rules of the land of the dead, it’s the living people who believe in it. Over the centuries, like any religious belief, the rules determining what exactly goes on after death shifted as popular consensus about how it works shifted. Case and point, as technology evolved, and photo depictions of family members was incorporated into Día de Muertos, the belief that it was necessary to fully remember the dead in that way overwrited the pre-established requirements.

I have a question, how come at the end of Coco, De la Cruz's grave is all broken up and has a sign that says "forgotten" even though the human world obviously would have not of known about the way he acted in the land of the dead and that the living and would probably not believe in Miguel if he talked about about Ernesto 's evil nature. Also he could not have been forgotten due to Ernesto being famous it would be impossible for him to be forgotten because there would be so many people know about his existence. So please explain the ending of Coco and the fate of Ernesto de la cruz.

So, it's been three months (and 13 days) since this video was made, but I really like Coco, and I found the Theorizer's theories here...a little lack luster, so I did some digging. Keep in mind, I am not of Mexican heritage, so I am not the authority on Dia de Muertos or anything, but I did do some cursory research. In the land of the dead, I thought a big key feature in figuring out what kind of afterlife this is and how it's structured and who rules after it would be the temple-like platforms connected to the marigold bridges...and in a way, I was right. It turns out Dia de Muertos as we know it today is a continually evolving festival that stems from ancient Aztec festivals for the dead. Over time these festivals became a bit more commercialized and anglicised (made more english) with the spread of Christianity through the Spanish colonization into what we know today. Early Aztec beliefs (or at least what I've found) seem to suggest that the bones and graves of the dead and personal items from the dead had a tie to the spirit world, and that in caring for these bones, graves and items, the dead would be allowed back to visit over a month long celebration under the watch of Mictēcacihuātl, an Aztec goddess literally translated to "Lady of the Dead". These traditions were passed down, along with explaining who each person was and a bit about them to better care for them personally. (Just as an example here, my grandfather passed away a year ago, and he loved old westerns and romance novels, but he wasn't accepting of the LGBT, so it would have been very bad to leave a copy of Brokeback Mountain for him, or subject his soul to watching it.) Anyway, over the years, this Aztec goddess continued to watch over this festival as it changed length, moved over months to better coincide with Halloween, and so forth. So, Mictēcacihuātl is probably who's ruling over the land of the dead, or perhaps Santa Muerte, which might be a more modern version of her, which, fun fact, seems to be very disliked by the Catholic religion. Beyond that, it's unclear what happens to those who are forgotten, even in Aztec society, but, given how the Aztecs seemed to have believed in levels of the afterlife, it's likely that souls continue to move through many levels of the afterlife, starting with the land of the dead as in Coco, and continuing downward into significantly less favorable conditions until....maybe rebirth? That part is really unclear, but there is an Aztec sun god who's known for making this death journey literally every night and at the end of the journey he is reborn and comes back to be the sun the next day only to repeat the journey again the next night into infinity. Interestingly, if the land of the dead was running solely off of ancient Aztec beliefs, then there is a separate afterlife for people who died young or in battle or in childbirth, and another separate afterlife for people who died particularly violent deaths, so Hector wouldn't likely be in the same afterlife as his family. I think the reasoning for the land of the dead being so overpopulated in the movie is because these three afterlives have been crammed and twisted together into the land of the dead, causing a massive population boom. Anyway, if anyone made it through reading all that, I commend you. This was all really fun and interesting to learn as I love learning about other cultures and especially really rich ancient cultures and even more so, anything relating to afterlife beliefs. (I know, I'm weird.) So, thank you for reading and learning with me, and if anyone wants to reply with corrections to my learning that's totally fine as I would love to learn more. Also, if someone wanted to reply telling me about their culture's beliefs that's fine too. Have a wonderful day/night, and, once again, thank you.

The rules for initiating The Final Death are quite simple. As long as one person remembers you, you will stay in the land of the dead. However, these memories can only be passed down by those who knew you in life. Coco was the last person to know Hector in life, and her memory was fading, hence why Hector almost enters The Final Death. It is only when Coco shows Miguel Hector’s photo that he is allowed to be remembered. That’s why the character we see experience The Final Death doesn’t get to stay, despite Miguel seeing him.

Ok, I know this was posted a LONG time ago, but here's something that blew my mind when I realized it: Ernesto is not dead. I mean, he's dead, but he's not dead dead. The only way to die from the land of the dead is to be completely forgotten by everyone on earth. And now Hector is famous as a songwriter, and by extension, Ernesto is famous as the villain of Hector's story. So as long as Hector is remembered, Ernesto will be too. And since Hector is now famous, he probably won't be forgotten for a very long time. That means Ernesto will still be trapped under a giant bell for that same very long time. Also, Ernesto now has to live with the knowledge that everything he did in life was meant to keep his own memory alive, and therefore, he has cursed himself with near immortality.
@celestiastra136 жыл бұрын
My biggest question of all: Hector said that only the one that knows you when you were alive can remember you or else you'll final-die, that's why Miguel wasn't able to save him. Coco is the only one who knows him when he's alive, hence why Hector's dying when Coco's memories fade. But, when Coco dies, shouldn't Hector final-die? Because she's the last person that remembers him when he's alive?

I have a question about when you die, what age do you appear in the land of the dead? We see Coco as an old lady but other family are seen as young. Is it at what age you die? But then that means that other family members would have had to die young to appear as they do in the land of the dead. Is it how your photo is on the afferenda? Then for people who don’t have their photo on the afferenda what determines how the look? What if they don’t have their picture on the afferenda then get their photo put up later. Would their appearance change? (If we go by the how they look in their photos on the afferenda idea). Or is it even how old you are in others memories? But there would be memories of you at different ages, or different people would remember you at different ages. Or is it at the strongest memory you have of that person? (Again we run into the different people remembering different ages those people are) or is it determined by the person who was closest to you strongest memory? Any ideas on the answer just reply!

Actually, the reason why Hector was about to experience final death is explained in the movie: you have to remember that person personally during your life or through the stories of people who knew them during their life. And Miguel did neither, he didn't get to know him in his lifetime nor did he learn about him through stories of those who remembered him. He learned about him in the afterlife, and that simply doesn't count.

Originally, having a grave with your name on it would be enough for you to be allowed to visit the land of the living, but some souls started taunting people. @iuribachnivsky30226 жыл бұрын
You should look into Mictlan. There are 9 levels of the underworld (afterlife). The dead were supposed to go on a journey for 4 years facing peril to reach their final rest. Like most ancient mythologies about death, including Egyptian, your soul can die after death, in which you simply no longer exist. This same underworld system was the inspiration for the video game Grim Fandango, and in that they empathized that many simply give up on the journey and rather than risk death, they simply build their own cities and societies, clinging to the life they knew when they were alive. The memory aspect could be a fail-safe to prevent overpopulation, as prior to forms of recording images or likenesses of your ancestors, they would spend several years completing a difficult journey to move on. But if you hang around, then they created a system that will eventually get rid of you, but it does provide extra time if you need it.

I think the land of the dead is a prison but the jailers are the living. They keep them in their memories so it keeps the ghosts from moving on to heaven or hell. Also in The corpse bride, Emily only moved on once she was at peace, like an unfinished business situation. Btw, I'm a big fan of yours and will continue to be a huge fan
@GabbyIsFine6 жыл бұрын
It was established in the movie that "remembering" doesn't equal "putting the photo up". Remembering has more to do with your life and stories being known by people. Having your photo up just means you can cross the bridge. Thus, even ancient historical figures could be still around in the Land of the Dead because people still pass their life stories forward, they just can't cross the bridge to visit the living. Hector wasn't even thinking about being remembered. He wanted his photo on the ofrenda so that he could cross the bridge and see Coco before his final death one less time.
@jimm607016 жыл бұрын
only got a few minutes into this theory, but theres a pretty important distinction you messed up pretty early: you don't need photos to be in the land of the dead, you need them to cross back into the real world. The shrines allow passage, but simply being remembered is what allows you to live in the land of the dead.

Great theory! I just have one problem with it though. You make the notion that Emelda's parents are gone because they dont have photos of them due to the times. However, if you go to De La Cruz's Hot Ticket party you can see some skeletons who sport ancient Aztec or Mayan attire who must've been some of the first in the land of the dead, yet they are still there. As Hector stated "when there's no one left in the world who remebers you, you vanish from this world." So it wouldn't be linked to photos, the photos just mean they can cross over and visit for the night if they are placed on the (forgive my spelling) ofrenda. So Emelda's parents weren't on the ofrenda so they couldnt visit during the time of the film, but there is no indication that she was an only child, so there is a possibility that her parents could still be around, just not in the immediate Rivera family. If she was and never spoke of her parents for some reason, then yeah, they would be gone when she passed on, but if she had any siblings who had families who openly remeber the parents then they could still be there, just unable to visit in the newer days shown in the movie because their pictures dont exist. So long as the memory of them stays alive then they stay alive, and the memories have to be passed on by direct family or by someone who knew them in life, and then the others who are told can choose to spead the word or keep it quiet, hence why De La Cruz is still around because everyone in the world knows of him, for better or for worse, since he has no known family. My apologies for the long post/ramble, i just thought I'd put in my thoughts on this. Love your videos and i hope to see more of your works! :3

It isn’t just about remembering, it’s about the stories of the people being passed down through generations. So if the dead person told a living person it wouldn’t count (ie: Hector to Miguel) but, when Coco starts telling stories of her father, he is allowed to live on in the land of the dead because somebody who knew him in life told his story to someone (the whole family really) who is living.

I have a question: Hector says that the person remembering him must have known him when he was alive. But after Coco there are no persons left who knew him when he was alive! That phrase from Hector doesn't make sense. Because we obviously see that it's just neccesary to tell stories about someone, like about Ernesto, or about Hector (the lyrics etc.) in the end. I think photos are not really neccesary, because you still can remember someone without having a photo. Imeldas parents are just too long dead already and no one doesn't really know stories about them anymore, I guess.

Should be worth noting that the reason Miguel wouldn't be able to postpone Hector's final death simply by returning to the land of the living is because of what Hector said: your memories must be passed down by those who knew you in life. Miguel only knew Hector in death. Coco was the only one left who remembered him; her remembering and passing down Hector's story was the only way left to keep his memory alive... dead? You know what I mean.

I like the fanfic that Hector was an orphan and that Imelda’s family hated that she wanted to be with him, so they disowned her and her brothers (Oscar and Felipe) decided to live with their sister instead of their parents.

The Land of the Dead was mentioned in this movie and "The Book Of Life". People had to remember their loved one when they died. That way people can be remembered in the past.

This reminds me of the Cybermen in Doctor Who, where Missy said clearly that the dead, if they were to rise up, they clearly out weigh the dead and, rightly so. Coco is my all time fav movie now (replacing Wall-e :( ) because of the aesthetics, beauty, story and the social commentary. Even in death, we're plagued by being poor,middle class or rich (forgotten souls, people who get regular amount of offerings after death and famous people like Ernesto who have overflowing offerings).

Actually, the pictures are used to be able to visit your grandkids at dia de los muertos. If your family that's still alive doesnt put a picture of you on the altar, you can't visit them. The pictures aren't used to immortalize. Also, it's impossible to be immortalized. EVERYBODY will be forgotten one day. Even Ernesto De La Cruz.

Since nobody seems to have pointed this out the way remembering spirits work in the movies logic is you had to know the spirit while they were still human. And then to keep them alive you had to pass down the stories of them in their life.
@onyxthememedragon28716 жыл бұрын
I think that it's not the photo keeping them with the memories, but it's just that once the stories are passed on, you must know what they look like for them to stay in the Land of the Dead.

I say the land of the death could also be call the land of remember since it’s full of many light and happiness like in the movie “The Book of Life”, which also shows the land of remember and the land of forgotten. I believe those whom had vanish in the land of remember will end up in the land of forgetton.

It sounds like you're blurring the line between being remembered and the pictures. While pictures can aid in remembering someone, they can be remembered with only the stories of those who knew them in life. The significance of the pictures is only in traveling from the land of the dead to the living world. The reason we may not see Imelda's parents or grandparents is that she never knew them in the first place and hence couldn't share their stories. As for Dante and Pepita, they are canonically alebrijes or spirit guides that may take the form of a physical animal in the real world. That's why Pepita shifts from the form of a Jaquin (essentially a winged jaguar) to a common house cat.

I haven’t actually seen the film, but what about learning about someone? Say there is a library that has your picture and information in it. All of your family and anyone that knew you has since died and so you fade away. But then 30 years later someone reads about you and sees what you look like. Do you come back? What if they learn about you this method before you fade away?

I’m pretty sure the memory question was answered in the movie, after Cheech died the second time Miguel asked why his memory wouldn’t count when he goes back to the land of the living and Héctor says that for it to count you either needed to know the person when they were alive or hear stories about them from people who did

i know you said pixar movies, but can you do something with Rise of the Guardians? I have three questions that never seem to get resolved. 1. Do Jack Frost and Pitch Black know each other before the events of the film? When Pitch is first mentioned to Jack, Jack turns around with a smile and an almost small chuckle as he asks, "you mean the Boogieman?" From the way he was acting and the way the question was asked, it sounded like he's looking for more of a confirmation, as if he heard right. Pitch does something similar when he and Jack meet at the Tooth Palace. "Hang on, is that Jack Frost? Since when are you all so chummy?" said Pitch as he sees Jack clearly for the first time since the scene started. Jack has apparently been alone, ignored and unseen for 300 years. so how do they know each other? did they cross paths before? 2. When Jack becomes Jack Frost, no one can see him. this is supposedly because no one believes in him. Now it's never mentioned in the movie, but Jack is the only magical being who has technically died in order for the moon to grant them power. no one else truly died. so is Jack invisible in the beginning because he really is a ghost, a phantom? I find it hard to believe that a family who is mourning his death wouldn't see or maybe hear him if it were something like needing belief, especially Jack's little sister, who his last few words included, "you've got to believe in me." 3. Is Jack's existence in danger? Jack was fine and not exactly in any form of pain or loss of power throughout the entire film other than when his staff was broken. He didn't need belief to prevent his end of existence, but when you look at the guardians near the end, they almost died, disappeared and weakened from a complete lack of belief. even Pitch was fine without belief for centuries! just slightly weaker because of the lack of fear. So my question now is; if Jack has joined the guardians and the man in the moon, is he now going to suffer from a lack of belief? It just seems that anyone who is under the Man in the Moon's group (the Guardians) relies on belief to keep them going since it's his power that gave each of them immortality and their special abilities. It almost seems like signing a deal with the devil! and Pitch and Jack were the only ones not affected when belief dropped. sure, they could be seen, but Jack never needed belief before and Pitch just needs fear to power himself. so what gives?

There is one problem though with your theory of Imelda’s possibly being “Final Death’d”. There is a quote from Hector that says “Our memories; they need to be passed down by those who knew us in life and the stories they tell us, but now there’s no left alive to tell Chicha’s stories.” Based on that quote, the only other way to remain in the land of the dead without a photograph is by retelling the stories of one’s life from one generation to the next. Even if we don’t know them by face, we can know them by who they were and what they did and why they were important. Without those stories, what’s there to remember but a simple photograph? TLDR: I believe Imelda’s parents are still around because maybe her daughter and her grand children have been told stories of their past

You don’t need the picture to be in the land of the dead, the pictures are for you to cross over and see your loved ones. To stay in the land of the dead (or go to) and not have your Final death is if people remember you and pass down memories of you. So when you have the Final death is when no one can or doesn’t remember you anymore.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that you do not need the picture of someone’s face on their memorial during the day of the dead for that person to be in the land of the dead you just need a living person to remember their face, I would imagine that realistically painted paintings and drawings would be able to serve that purpose prior to the invention of the camera. The reason Hector was going to disappear when Coco died was because there would be no one left alive that would remember his face and because he had no picture nobody would be able to recognize who he was.

I think i got a theory......Maybe U used to Not need a photograph to be remembered in the land of the dead...... ...But after The the Land of the dead was being overpopulated things were getting bad.. there wasn’t enough room for everyone... So there was a new rule established that states you need a photograph to be remembered. This caused a Mass Genocide in the land of the dead for those who were not remembered in a photo. Maybe thats why....

I think the ruler of the Land of the Dead, at least the part we see may be La Muerte, Lady Death. There may be a connection between Coco and The Book of Life in this way. The Land of the Dead looks very similar, are entered by a bridge, and have the same chaotic, festive feel. The only big difference is that The Book of Life has two halves of the Land of the Dead, like Heaven and Hell, where Coco is only seen to have one that has it's own society and rules. My theory is maybe the Final Death leads to one or the other of these halves. La Muerte and her husband Xibalba rule over all three: purgatory, The Land of the Remembered, and The Land of the Forgotten. Or perhaps what we see in Coco is the Land of The Remembered, and the Final Death leads to The Land of the Forgotten. Either way we probably have two rulers
