This theory actually makes even more sense when you consider the fact that Charles Muntz was largely inspired by a real person named Howard Hughes. He was an aviator and adventurer throughout the early part of the 20th century, and when he got older and more reclusive, he hired a double when he had to meet with certain people in public. Hughes died in 1976, but many conspiracy theorists believe that it was his double that died in 1976, and that the real Howard Hughes died many years before that. I'm guessing that if this theory is true, then the producers probably took inspiration from that.

I just thought of something. What if the imposter is actually Charles's son? Maybe he didn't get plastic surgery? It would explain why there are SOME similarities in terms of appearance between them but some differences, like his green eyes that he could've got from his mother. I find something interesting. When he talks to Carl while they are having dinner, then noticed Carl indeed has the bird, Charles gets more hostile and creepy. He then goes on about stories of travelers who came, and he takes these mannequin heads with goggles and rolls them to the floor, indicating without blatantly saying he killed them. Now this could actually tie into your theory. Perhaps Charles (or this crazy fan) is found by other people just like Carl found him, but as soon as these people start to suspect that he is not actually the real Charles, he kills them immediately. He may have this obsession to be Charles and doesn't want anyone to think otherwise.

My theory is that he's actually his son, Charles Jr. His father died never finding the bird and Jr inherited the blimp and his obsession. But since he never had the spirit of adventure like his father, he only cared about the fame and fulfillment from completing his father's legacy, he was hostile and then murderous after going crazy in isolation.

Something also occurs to me about the dogs. Dogs don't live as long as humans do, and in the time that it would take for a "brave man" to continue exploring and searching for a snipe around Paradise Falls, they would have died. The dogs following "Charles" around the time Carl arrives cannot be the ones that followed the original Muntz. Doug never would have known any other master, and neither would any of the other dogs, even the Alpha. If someone knows how to train dogs, then raising a new pack wouldn't be a problem. I also suspect that the original Muntz only had a small collection of dogs that were very obedient and contained. Only a few walk out of the blimp in the news clip, whereas when Carl and Russel meet the man, the dogs are numerous and rampant, and depend on another to lead them who is not their master, but the Alpha. They follow the Alpha, not their owner.

ironic phrasing but it does hold some truth, blue at least in humans is one of the lighter eye colors so even in greyscale it can be fairly obvious if someone had brown or not and the other possible colors are a lot less common

@@gnamp the color may be gone but if the photo is good enough you can still get a decent idea of the intensity and contrast and most humans draw from a fairly limited pool of colors so unless its something like green, grey or a vibrant blue which are all rare colors its a good assumption that light colors in well kept old photos may show the typical pale blue. yes it could be someting else but if its someone who is well know it would already be known that they have an odd color. so yes the photo by itself cant determine much of anything, it is still possible to determine with some accuracy though this is usually a moot point since you would already know the eye color of the individual you are trying to examine so its only any good for cases like this where the possibility of a double are in consideration. also i dont know if this can be applied to this case specifically since i had it running background so i didnt see the photo being displayed

This is a great theory, but two of the points didn't make much sense to me (I don't mean to be rude): earlobes can elongate with age, and that looks like it could have happened here, and some people wear their age better than others, so saying he "doesn't look 92" doesn't really prove that he isn't. Again, I love this theory but those points just didn't sell it to me.

What if the Charles Muntz that appears in the movie is actually Charles Muntz' son! Because their is no way that the original Charles Muntz would still be alive when Mr. Fredricksen finally meets him. Mr. Fredricksen used to watch documentaries of Muntz when he was a kid, so Muntz should probably be about 30 years older or something. Let's say that the original Muntz was dying and Charles Muntz asked his son to play his role because he didn't find the bird yet. And his son excepted, but little did he know that his son was a psycho path. And his son was so determined by his father's wish, that he started KILLING the other explorers. And he bought thousands of dogs to get rid of anyone who would get in his way. This explains why Fredricksen and Muntz seem to be the same age when they meet.

A popular theory is Carl actually died in his sleep the morning the old folks home people come to retrieve him. Thus why he is able to quickly renovate it to fly off. The kid is actually Carls guardian angel (in the form of a child as that was also something Carl and Ellie wanted deeply in life that never got to happen. When I first watched the movie the first thing that came in mind was this guy looks too young to be older than Carl . Supposedly when Carl first watched him , he was around his 20s or so and Carl was a kid so seeing him look younger than Carl just doesn’t make any sense. I agree with this theory. I was always suspicious of how active Charles seemed compared to Carl. Also, I believe Charles alternate used the other 'explorers' as hostages to get his supplies and these were really families and groups with a tour guide traveling about. Carl and the little boy wouldn't work because Carl was too old and the boy too young to be useful.

Maybe thats true and the previous alpha dog was doug. Think about it, he is the ONLY dog who brought his kind to the attention of other people. He is also the ONLY dog mistreated out of all of them. It would also make sense as to why the other dogs were so quick to trust him as the alpha dog at the end of the film

What if the "imposter" was one of Charles cousins it would deplane the similarities and the differences like the ear lobes. I think the cousin was just really jealous. So, when Charles went on the blimp he snuck up there with him and when Charles was sleeping he killed Charles and threw the body in the ocean. Note: this boy was probably like 7 when he killed Charles.This cousin must of been really jealous. I know this is a dark theory but I some how believe it.

For me the difference in the earlobes really makes this theory, the chameleon (Frédéric Bourdin) was proven to be an imposter of missing Nicolas Barclay in 1997 mostly due to the fact that their earlobes were completely different.

what if I told you that the voices of the dogs are actually the murdered adventurers voices. I mean think about it. One piece of audio recorded could be manipulated to voice all other dogs. And then the other dogs have slightly distorted types of voice. And because there were no female adventurers, there were no female voices. also the food could be scavenged from the past adventurers. The demonic fanboy may have even killed the original Muntz when he came aboard, meaning that he went out of his way to make it to Paradise Falls.

This is a nice theory! When I watched this movie years back I thought Carl actually goes to the old age home, sits in his room and imagines everything! I mean, how can balloon take a whole house up? There should be like millions of it required. He should have mixed his previous experiences, like the boy coming to assist him, his dream to reach the spot, his childhood hero. I think as a creator, this is how imaginations take us. He has a satisfying ending to his story and he relives it till his last breath. Remember JOKER?

my theory is that the imposter in the movie is actually charles' son. maybe he even named him charles junior. but mostly i think charles wanted his son to carry on his legacy, not sure how far but i think for the most part i think the charles in the movie thought his father wanted him to act like him so he did.
