I wasn't too optimistic about Shang Chi based on the trailers. I was so delightfully surprised at how much better the film was than I expected. Kick ass action, great cinematography, loved the depth they gave to the characters. This was such a good mix of my childhood watching all those old kung fu movies with what modern Marvel have been doing. Edit: Also love that Hollywood let the characters speak Chinese instead of copping out with the Chinglish.

It feels like Marvel is FINALLY letting directors do their own thing to give movies more personality. It's a shame they're doing this now though because I still mourn the Edgar Wright Ant Man movie that we never got, but they seem to be righting their wrongs. Hopefully the Eternals follows in Shang-Chi's footsteps.

They've been doing that since Guardians 2 and Ragnarok
@TheApacheNinja3 жыл бұрын
@@Joviaero yeah but it feels like they're really committing to it now. Guardians and Ragnarok are easy to see they're directed by James Gunn and Taika Waititi because they do have more style, but there feels like there's limitations to how much of their own flare they can put into it. I don't know, I'm just hoping that Disney is going to let directors go all in on their movies now instead of a half in the bag effort. I do see what you mean though.
@FerociousPaul3 жыл бұрын
@@TheApacheNinja I think Guardians and Ragnarok inspired them to be .ore liberal with their directors. The voices that Gunn and Waititi gave those films went A LONG WAY. The first Ironman was the same way, Favreau had a lot more liberty with it and you can feel his voice as a director in that film. Ironman 2 though... not so much. Thor the Dark World didn't go over well either. They learned that their worst movies are the ones they interfere with too much.

Just came back from watching Shang Chi and I am blown away, definitely one of my top Marvel film. As a Chinese Malaysian, it was honestly fun to see how Chinese culture was being represented and also Malaysian actors in the film. I love how sometimes the actors would talk in Chinese and randomly switch to English, and the choreo during the opening sequence where the dad first fought the mum, it reminded me so much of fight scenes I would usually see in some old chinese shows where people fight in the middle of the forest and they often have this "floating" feeling, but it was executed so well for this film. Speaking of choreo, the fight sequences for the film is top notch. Literally one of the best I have seen. For instance, the bus sequence was mind blowing since they had used every inch of the bus. It just felt so grounded, like this would happen if a superhero fought villains in a bus. Still can't get the sequence out of my head. Tho I would still say, this film is not perfect, some scenes were a tad bit boring, some cgi were not good, but overall, this was still a great fucking film. I cannot stress enough how amazing the choreography of the show is, the humor was on point, the chemistry between characters were great, the cgi for the creatures and some of the effects were amazing (especially the chinese guardian lions), the world building is mesmerizing and we must not forget the 10 rings (it's in the title), like whoever came out of the concept and actually gave it so much thought on it, mad kudos. Like the idea of 10 rings was pretty lame to me at the start, but I was stunned seeing the ways it was explore, the possibilities is endless, can't wait to see how much more it has installed in the future. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical from watching the trailer but glad I went and watch it still, it was such a breath of fresh air. A solid 7/10 for me. Will definitely rewatch it once I can get my hands on it online

The story was great but I wish they would’ve focused more on Shang Chi and The Mandarin specifically. The pacing was a little odd. But Jeremy did say the action was good… until the third act. This movies a solid mid tier mcu movie for me overall

I'm liking the tagging of lesser known films onto the more mainstream reviews thing, always up for finding new films I would otherwise maybe miss.

I love that you're doing this thing despite your busy schedule. Especially this format. I've not been able to see as many movies as I used to due to a busier schedule but I watch CODA because of this and it was such a heartwarming and soothing experience. I even watch Suicide Squad 2021(which genuinely wasn't on my radar) because of ur recent review and that was a great experience too.

Hey Chris, just watched Coda because of this video, and it’s already one of my favourite films from this year. Thank u for this new and fresh style of videos that exposed me to many unknown films

really loved Coda....being raised in a family with a deaf family member i always thought about how i could never describe what music felt like to my loved ones...really resonated with me....also chris u should check out paper tigers which came to netflix this august...sort of an indie martial arts flick with main minority cast members

i wonder if they do kind of know how music feels because it feels like so many other things, which is what is so magical about music. it feels like when you're relaxed or when you're excited or when you're sad. when you lay in the sunlight or race against the wind. when you feel horney or when you read a book and feel something like how the person in the story feels. like food, music can make you remember moments in your life you have forgotten and feel how you felt then again. music can make you feel love. like your mom placing her hand on your back. or saying i love you. it's all of those feelings in life, but triggered by rhythmic sounds. anyway. just wondering.

I'm so glad Emelia Jones has a role to breakthrough into the US, she's been one of our best kept secrets for years. I had no idea Cretton directed Shang-Chi, can't wait to see it now. I mean, he wrote and directed Short Term 12 but he ALSO co-wrote The Shack, so I don't know what to think.

CODA was absolutely one of the surprise favorites of this month. I LOVED this movie, both as a life-long music student and musician, and the wife of a wonderful man who’s also hard-of-hearing. It was funny. It was poignant. It was all too real to me. I can’t wait to see Shang-chi. Lots of great offerings coming to film and I’m glad you reviewed both of these. Thanks for keeping up the good work on your channel. Best wishes on your film career. I can’t wait to see more!

Just came back from the theatre for Shang Chi and it surprisingly blew my mind away! The most spectacular and the best movie in 2021 so far! Slightly edging Black Widow and probably the best solo MCU movie since Black Panther. Gotta be the best all asian cast movie ever produced! Great emotional family story and Tony Leung deserved an award for this. It has the best martial art display I've seen since Donnie Yen's Ipman. Lastly, the score got me goosebump the entire movie. Thank you, MCU for never failed to disappoint and I'm so gonna watch it again.

I probably won't be going to the movies anytime soon because of concerns with that sickness, but Shang-Chi always had my interest, mostly because I don't know who the character is, so it provides a good opportunity for the movie to do its own thing rather than just be another Marvel movie providing universe context.

i love living in a place where chinese makes a good percentage of the population. Watching this with other chinese people and catching the jokes and having other people also react was great. There's a thing though that isn't *huge* but it is something and that is the subtitles do not do the lines justice. Most famous is the scene when Wenwu talks down to the Village elder. That is not what he says and what he actually says means so much more than what the subtitles are saying That said, if you aren't a native speaker you aren't going to miss out on the movie. It's not like....Kill Bill 2 where the cantonese subtitles were so blatantly incorrect that I have to watch the scene without reading the subtitles (not an easy task for somebody who watches subbed anime and can read subtitles absent mindedly) or I will get upset. Other than that small nitpick, this is such a good movie. I think Chris is right to say it is on Winter Soldier level in terms of good. I hope Marvel can continue to push their films in a new direction to keep things fresh.

Grades are purely subjective anyway. One person's A is another person's B. It's even worse for number grades. All that matrers is whether you recommend it, don't recommend it, or recommend waiting for home release, streaming or discount (not bad but not great either).
@MYERS133 жыл бұрын
I'm really disappointed in his direction with the channel. I respect his reasons for reformatting his content, but I really miss his subjective film reviews. No more grades... no more Hilariocity... it's a real shame because he was the best movie reviewer on YT. There's a reason his channel has seen a massive decline in viewership. Not all movies are perfect, and it's ok to talk about bad ones. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and this is mine, so don't come for me. Am I the only one that feels this way?

With all due respect to so many of the channels I watch (Chris included, I'm sure) who are or have been sponsored by random mobile games, VPNs, web domain purchasers, meal delivery services, and water bottles, I'm often left kinda scratching my head as to how I'm the target audience for their advertising or how it's relevant to the channel. Displate looks pretty cool. I think I'll put one of these on my wish list.
