Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching!!! Today our team is called to a very serious crash.....a semi truck VS a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck. At first, the call came in as a fatality crash. Thankfully, it was not, by the grace of God. Both vehicles are HEAVILY damaged. I take our flagship Peterbilt 389X with Miller Industries, Century 11150R Heavy Rotator. Ethan brings the new Western Star 49X with a 9055XL. Oscar brings our Peterbilt 579 and our TrailEze TE801 ramp trailer. And Shelby brings our Peterbilt LCG12 rollback (tilt tray). We have other equipment and there are parts of the video I had to edit out, but I believe you will still have a great video. We perform a very unconventional recovery method, at least for this area, to get the truck and trailer back to the shop in one piece. You will understand when you watch the video. Thank you, God, for blessing our family and our business. Watch as we continue to receive God's blessings. There is much more to come!!! I hope you enjoy this video!!!
We have a difficult and dangerous job and we take it very seriously, that doesn't mean we can't have fun and enjoy our work. We strive to be polite, professional, efficient, and safe...and still can have fun. I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

That was one of my biggest pet peeves when I worked ambulance for 45 years. People would think, oh it's just an ambulance. I had one do that for 12 miles on the interstate. When I oved over they moved over. I called ahead and had a state officer waiting at the scene of the crash. They pulled them over and said we'll talk when we're sone. We took care of our injured and when we transported 40 minutes later, they were still there. I talked with the officer at the hospital 4 hours later and he said they were upset at me for using such loud siren for so long. He towed their car. Made my day. Thanks for your videos and caring nature sir.

OMFG.... really that was his reason? Vehicle towed, license revoked, and prohibited from getting a license for two years is everything that should of happened to that person. A lesson like that is bound to leave a mark they'll remember and hopefully pass on to others.

21 year fireman in major university town. I was in the 'O' seat of the 100' tower one slick day and an asian man saw all the traffic at a light stop for us so he pulled out in front of us against his red light because everything stopped... except our 68,000 Lb tower. Our driver slammed on the brakes so hard my face dam near hit the windshield. The cops got him. Foreign grad student from a country with little to no traffic laws or enforcement. A ticket did little to nothing to his SE Asian 'license'.

We were going to a fire one time, and an old man in a six wheel dump truck wasn't getting over. The Chief was driving the h drove up beside the truck and started pulling over towards him. We were right beside him window to window before he saw us. I think the old man was stone deaf. You should have seen his eyes when he saw us. You never saw anyone getting a truck on the shoulder, so fast. Dan 🇺🇸

I have posted here before, but this situation looks very familiar. In February of 1985 I was three-years-old and riding in my parent's '76 Ford Elite. On our way to a regular shopping trip in Des Moines, Iowa, it started to rain. Dad slowed down as a result, but we ended up being hit nearly head on by a fuel semi. The four of us in the car survived and the truck driver had no lasting injuries. My dad was knocked out when hitting the windshield, but he and my aunt have no lasting injuries. My mother got pinned by the dash, had broken ribs, and basically everything from hips down crushed. Today, she walks short distances, but needs a scooter for longer travel. I was the only one wearing a seat belt (lap belt at that time) and received a high-level spinal cord injury. As a result, I can't breathe on my own or feel/control anything below my shoulders. Thankfully, God provided someone to help me breathe at the scene. In the 39 years since then, I have been given the ability to do many things, including a part-time preacher. I pray the two involved in this incident will go on to use the time God has granted them.

Yeah, people are dumb, I slowed down for an ambulance once, and started to move over, the guy behind me decided that it was the perfect time to pass when the ambulance was next to him... It did not end well for everyone involved. Also seen someone get rear ended by a fire truck, it was traveling in the carpool lane, and I guess the person driving only saw that the lane was now clear because of everyone else moving out of the way and pulled out from stop and go traffic directly in front of a fire engine doing 100+ kmh, or 60ish mph, took the impact directly on the drivers door, and it completely obliterated the car.

Hey Ron, retired firefighter here for 23 years. Have a few observations and a suggestion or two. First of all, I totally get your frustration with vehicles not pulling over. I was on a call one time for a field fire and was a passenger in our grass fire rig, a Ford pickup that we built into a grass rig ourselves (volunteer dept). We were on a major highway in Ohio (US RT 68) and came up on a vehicle that wasn't pulling over. The car eventually started to pull to right, so the driver, who was also a Deputy Sheriff, with defensive driving course under his belt, started to move to the left to go around him. Then all of the sudden, the vehicle started making a left turn onto a side road. We had to swerve left even more and into the grass on left side of the road, up and over the side road and back out onto the highway. Luckily, there was barely any ditch to speak of, and it was fairly flat, but it was still quite a ride. We turned the guy, but never heard what happened to him. Second, when you first arrived on scene, you put up text about not being a fatality scene, but were requested to "treat the vehicles" as if it WAS a fatality scene. I'm not familiar with that. Could you explain?? Now a suggestion. When I was first being trained to drive fire trucks, by a defensive driving instructor, we were all told that if we are traveling at speed on a highway, it is best to the "Wail" siren instead of Yelp or Two Tone. We were told that this is because there are people who are deaf to certain frequencies of sound and the Yelp and TwoTone only use a couple of those frequencies. Where the Wail goes up and down through almost all of them. So there is a much better chance of the hard of hearing drivers to hear the siren at some point during the frequency band. Just a thought. I also agree with another poster who suggested when running code, to only use the blue and red lights and turn off the yellow. The yellow kind of drown out the blue/red because there are so many more of them. So if it's allowed, I would suggest trying that too.
@friedacorns
@friedacorns 24 күн бұрын
I was thinking the same thing in regard to the siren tones, I also agree with the light observation.... The amber or yellow lights mess with the perception of the other colors and people might think it is some jerk in his truck just trying to get through quickly. Although when in doubt, drivers should still move over, your better off yielding for a jerk than taking the risk of slowing down an emergency vehicle.
@friedacorns
@friedacorns 24 күн бұрын
Also, I have heard them say to treat it like a fatality here in Wisconsin, and at least here it means that there are critical injuries that could turn out to be fatal and they are to preserve the state of the vehicles and any evidence as if it were fatal, just in case I.e tarps, etc.
@ScottMStolz
@ScottMStolz 21 күн бұрын
If they are concerned that someone won't survive, they treat the scene as if it were a fatality just in case to preserve evidence. If someone dies in the hospital from injuries from the crash, it's still considered a fatality. Some states also treat fatality and major injury the same since both can lead to felony criminal charges.

It could also be that Ron's state is unique for having tow trucks that allow code. Most states (not to mention Canada) do not allow 'code' equipment on tow trucks (ie. sirens, and blue/red lights, not to mention the Right-of-Way laws to back up their use). If the person is from out of state, they may not have realized that they were required to yield.

I'm not sure about where Ron is at, but sadly we can't do that out here. There's no way to prove who actually committed the violation, whether it was the registered owner, their spouse, or someone entirely different. You might be able to convince someone to send out an angry letter. Whether the registered owner cares is a gamble. This would be good for the training archives though.

But as far as I know towies don't have red & blue lights, well not in South Australia, and I don't think they come under the "emergency services" banner. I think our fire & recues services now have pretty much all the rescue equipment they generally need, although they could probably could do with more. Registered owner cops the fine & demerit points have to fill out forms & identify offending driver, especially if they don't want to wear the fine etc.

I would be installing a Chrysler Air Raid siren on that truck. Those you can hear for 25 miles. You would need to figure out a remote system for the throttle and gearshift on the siren to operate it from inside the cab of the truck though. For those unfamiliar with the Chrysler air raid sirens, Chrysler made those from 1952 to 1957 using a V8 engine powering a mechanical type siren (a much larger version of the Q siren) that has a hearing distance of 25 miles from the siren itself during the Cold War. In 1953 ish, the engine choice was the 331 CID Hemi Chrysler V8. It was a direct drive with a neutral-drive connection from the engine to the siren. Basically a 1 speed forward only gearbox with neutral. People around there would hear it and say that Ron is on a call to a wreck.

When you have someone not yield like that white vehicle, do you ever give their licence plate or anything to law enforcement, especially when it was as egregious as that one? I was filming a building fire on the side of the highway recently when a car drove right past a flagger with a stop sign, I was able to get his licence plate and give it to the fire chief of the department providing mutual aid and I later learned that the RCMP was able to get the driver with it. I know I'd be quite pissed if I was driving behind someone like that while running code.

Some 70's + woman passed my truck on the road then got to a stop sign and STOPPED! I would have hit her, but I was able to get past her and stopped in front of her car. I had already contact local PD about her and they were there in a matter of minutes. I lost my cool and was scolding her for her stupidity. She was heading to 'get her hair done' at the beauty parlor. I told her the only thing she almost got was to get her hair done for her funeral. She was ticketed and turned out, ultimately arrested. She no longer had a valid driver's license. Scary to have that happen. YOU are a very skilled and talented man to handle that scene like you did!! God Bless you and your entire team for your work!!!!

What happened to the Q?
@michaellinde8529

I was thinking about that also? Please look into the newest electronic siren technologies like the rumbled type. The deep lower frequency is more effective as most people have more response the this. With every day loud noises people are becoming more hearing impaired. People listening too loud music and headphones are also a problem. The rumblem technology causes the surrounding vehicles to also vibrant and the actual ground so people walking feel it too. The air horns are very effective hands down. Maybe adding some train type horns would help when only responding to priority calls. Stay safe always and god bless!

As I recall, the momentary switch was mounted in an awkward position towards the passenger side of the dash. Operating it would require three hands... Normally a Q2 would be foot operated from a momentary switch installed to the left of the clutch pedal. Ron states down below that the Q2 died and he's looking for another one.

Sirens at that speed with rain is easily drained out especially when your using a yelp which is a short range tone as a long range tone....you should have had the wail going and done a few high beam flashes while sounding the horn, people seem to think sirens are loud when at high speeds are about as loud as strapping a iphone to your bonnet and playing a siren. Ex response driver from the UK, imo you need to look into the different siren tones and what they should be used for as a yelp in that weather at that speed wont be heard at all, yelp should be used at low speeds so coming up to junctions etc not on long stretches of road this should be the wail hence the name it throws the sound out very far and is literally designed for long range, weather also reduces visibility so there is a chance they just didn't see you or they purposely just didn't want to slow for a heavy slow tow truck, UK is just as bad with unaware drivers but as a response driver you should be making sure you have done everything right so the correct tone and positioning and high beam flashes then if they still don't see you its on them.

Some drivers are seemingly "zoned out" and simply cannot respond properly. About forty years ago, while responding to a code 3 ambulance call, my driver was running all emergency lights, the Federal electronic siren, and a Federal Q2. There was a total of fourteen red lights visible from the front, as well as alternate flashing headlights. Sadly, there was an elderly lady who was driving her Cadillac below the speed limit who was totally oblivious to our sirens and lights. We could see the red lights "washing" the interior of her car! It wasn't until John tooted the ambulances' stock horn that she noticed our presence behind her, panicked and then moved onto the shoulder of the road, lost control and smacked into a tree! We of course had to stop and render aid after calling into dispatch and having them send another ambulance to our original call.

Its obvious that the driver of the white SUV did not see Ron behind him. After all the rotator is just a small, 70,000 recovery vehicle, fitted with multiple flashing lights that would have dazzled him. and with the noise of the sirens and the horn he would not have been able to hear you behind him. Time to get a bigger truck, or maybe a very strong nudge bar to "assist" the offending vehicle onto the shoulder. That way you could charge for the recovery job on the way back, and get a nice little side line going too!

Wow! It absolutely infuriates me when I see other drivers failing to yield for emergency vehicles including Towing & Recovery Vehicles as well. I’m actually a former member of my local emergency service unit along with also still serving as a heavy towing & recovery operator. Over here in the lower part of upstate New York. I hope that driver who did not move out of the way is okay and was not experiencing a medical emergency at the time. I’ve had that happen to me before too while serving my community. So frustrating to see this constantly happening. As always a horrible crash that became a huge great recovery by the Midwest Towing & Recovery Company! Also I love the bond between you guys and the other 1st responders to get the job done. I’m surprised that you didn’t mention the first vehicle who failed to yield to that police officer at that the end of the video. I’m grateful that both drivers survived.
