I just finished watching “Unbreakable” and “Split”. I actually got teared up at the end inspired by David Dunn showing the newspaper clipping to his son and mouthing “You were right.” Just the way that scene was acted and his son was tearing up too. And that inspiration for David seeped into my sadness for Elijah. Even though you realize Elijah is a villain at the end, it breaks your heart that his purpose is fulfilled, but he has to punished for what he’s done. Elijah is the ultimate sympathetic villain. Also the score is just awesome. Totally agreed.

I think he has made lots of great films. I just think he stayed went a little too hitchock-ish for people. I really loved Signs, Devil, Lady in the Water, Split, The Visit, and hell, even After Earth wasn't that bad. The Happening was too bad either. I just wasn't a huge fan of Mark Whalberg's acting in it. But I think Night wanted that because that film was a huge call back for a B movie.

an interesting thing about Osteogenesis Imperfecta, is that along with the types where a bone protein is very low, and thus very easy to break, there is another type where it makes too much of a protein and makes the bones very dense, very hard to break, and thus very heavy in water. Could be that David Dunn has this alternate type of too much protein than Elijah's too little protein.

Well this was an interesting movie. It does have the signature MNS interesting premise and trademark twist. I do not think it fully explores the idea though or come up with the right narrative though. Somehow the character of Samuel L Jackson does not feel genuine. So it remains a half baked idea or it does not work effectively. I think the character of Bruce Willis is really well done and he actually puts in a great performance in that role but the other half of the story is incomplete or just does not impress. Its well done as far production values and acting is concerned. The background score is good, the acting is good but this story is unfinished. Also I notice MNS uses a grim tone for his movie. And frankly I cannot understand why. Yes Split was fine with a dark and grim tone but Unbreakable did not need this tone. All in all I have to say that Unbreakable has an interesting idea but its not convincing enough. Your narrative has to convince people. And like Split the narrative of Unbreakable even though more focused and better acted just fails to convince. Just like the actions of James McAvoy and Anna Taylor seem disconnected here too the actions of Jackson seem hard to believe. MNS probably needs to work on his screenplay. His screenplay needs to be tighter so that everything makes sense in the end or the focus of the audience is limited on the main theme. I really saw no reason to put in all that super hero reference in that movie and make it so philosophical. If that (meaning Jackson versus Willis) was your idea it was better to follow that idea. Same thing happened in Glass when he tried to put in too many themes around that concept of McAvoy and his kidnapping of three girls. You cannot or should not compromise the audience's experiences in the attempt to make a philosophical or social point. Glass tried to make a point about child abuse and Unbreakable tried to make a point about the presence of good and evil in daily life than in merely in comic books or super hero stories. But that came at the cost of the narrative. An interesting idea has to transform into a entertaining and engaging movie because ultimately its manner in which the story is presented that matters. A fine idea without the right structure or the narrative to support it is wasted. Take Malignant. Its a uniquely wild idea. But the narrative effectively presents it so its feels entertaining and with the right amount of thrills and action. I would still give Unbreakable a 6.5. Its a good idea and acting here is several notches better.

I think there are many things to like in this film. Very nice score, strong characters. However the pacing is terrible. There were numerous scenes where I was down right bored and found pointless. I think there should have been more to the final fight. Nothing over the top but just more. The twist wasn't really a twist for me....overall reaction was "oh ok, he's a terrorist?...lets move on". I think the film is alright and certainly not a bad film, but no where near the "masterpiece" that people are calling it.

Bruce Willis does good but bad at the same time in my opinion. He doesn't act like a normal person. Its like Will Shattner with the pauses its so ridiculous. When he talks like an actual normal person I think its great. Dude always looks like he is constipated for some reason. I think like the "Don't shoot me" Part is a good example of him speaking normal but looking goofy as hell. Unlike the sixth sense or die hard for example. He actually acts like a normal person in those movies, with how he converses with people. I like this film but I think It went from UnderRated to OverRated like "The Room". With "The Room" it was a "its so bad its good" to "This movie is great" "Unbreakable" went from "Movie sucks so slow barley any action" to "Its greatest comicbook movie" Maybe I'm just mind blown by how cult classics are becoming so Mainstream they don't really have that "Cult Classic" label anymore. Kind of Like if people started praising the hell out of "Idle Hands" out of no where. Good Review Keep up the Good Work!

I saw this back in the day and didn't like, it but I couldn't remember much about it, so I watched it again last night with my partner and kids (aged 18 and 19). We all hated it. It is so boring for one thing (I found myself longing for it end around the 70 min mark), but it's also full of very stupid logic and plot points. Example 1: Willis' character is "unbreakable" and has never been injured nor sick in his life. If that was the case he would know it. He would always have known it. It would be part of his very character/psyche. The fact he has to have it pointed out to him and even then has to ask his wife if he's ever been sick or ask his boss if he's ever been off sick from work is just ludicrous. HE WOULD KNOW. I can't get past stupid plot logic in a movie. Example 2: Mr Glass assumes that since he is so breakable there must be another person at the other end of the spectrum who is unbreakable. Why? Why would anyone assume that? Glass has a known medical condition that, while rare, many people do suffer from. It is well-documented. He's nothing special. I was at school in Scotland with a boy who had the same condition and we all had to treat him very carefully as a result (we were all instructed by teachers when he joined our class). I befriended him and we friends for many years. He broke bones often, perhaps monthly. Wrists were by far the most common and would break just by him trying to operate a door handle! Very scary disease. Not once did that boy ever speculate that since he had this condition, there must be another human on the planet who had the opposite of him. That would be like someone with a peanut allergy assuming there must be someone else out there to whom peanuts give super powers. It's dumb.

Great review as usual Cody. I actually have one negative, and it's literally the last 5 seconds of the film. When the screen freezes at the end and the writing comes up telling us about the fate of Elijah Price, it would have been better if there had been just a fade out with no writing. Better still, the final image should have been a close up of Sam Jackson's face with a mad grin and tears running down his cheeks as he screams, " THEY CALLED ME MR GLASS!"
